Money money money 💰 . (If you didn’t sing that, I’m disappointed) . These coins are from Constantine I or ‘the great’ as he was known. He was the first Roman emperor to covert to Christianity which pathed the way for the Byzantine culture and the western medieval culture. Constantine the great also created Constantinople in 330 and was the capital of the Roman Empire. These coins are known as follis which were used world wide during the Roman period and are made of bronze. . First coin: OBVERSE: laureate bust facing right, wearing a cuirass. REVERSE: globe set upon an alter . The others: OBVERSE: laureate bust facing right, wearing a cuirass, possibly holding an eagle-tipped sceptre. REVERSE: Genius standing left and potentially holding patera and cornucopia. . #roman #romancoins #coins #moneymoneymoney #archaeology #archaeologist #archaeologylife #archaeologylovers #archaeologynews #archaeologystudent #romanarchaeology #romanbritain #romanempire #constantine #constantinethegreat #archaeologistlife #archaeological #archaeologicalsite #archaeologistsofinstagram

This beautiful vessel is in the form of the goddess Athena, as we can see from her helmet & the Medusa on her breastplate. Oil or perfume flasks in the form of human figures were very popular in the 4th cent. BCE. They combine the red-figured technique with a new polychrome decoration on the front that is usually associated with terracotta items. Here, we see a fair amount of paint survives, as does some of the gilding on the helmet & jewelry. 400-375 BCE, both made & found in Athens (BM GR 1893.11-3.4) All 📷 @imagesofantiquity (@sandra.flow)

Another special pipe from the foreshore . This time, it's a regular ovoid model, produced in Gouda from the 2nd half of the 18th century onwards. From 1739/1740, pipemakers from Gouda used the coat of arms of their city as an additional mark on the side(s) of the heel. Since those marks are missing, it's likely an imitation. The mark confirms that hypothesis. The marks reads as 'TS', which was also used in Gouda, yet not with calligraphy and with a crown. This adds to the conclusion that this pipe wasn't made in Gouda. . Pipes with this mark are attributed to the pipemaker B. Thijs, who worked in Lier (modern day Belgium) and used this mark between 1810 and 1820. . This pipe is amongst the first finds of pipes made by Thijs. . Once again many thanks to @janvanoostveenarcheologie for identifying this marked pipe. . Discovering the longest sword and largest mirror in ancient Japan ⬇️ In January 2023, the finds from excavations within the Tomio Maruyama burial mound in Nara city caused a media sensation: they had unearthed the longest sword ever discovered in the country. This extraordinary artefact is well over 2m in length, making it doubtful that the sword could have been brandished by a single individual in ceremonies, let alone combat. It was joined in the tomb by a mirror that is also the largest known in Japan, and further distinguished by it's graceful decoration. Last issue, in the second in a two-part series on Japanese tombs, we examined what the combination of these objects might signify, and how the story is developing. Though the rain here in Maryland the past couple of weekends has created some challenges, I enjoyed helping a group of 27 Scouts to complete the various tasks necessary to earn their Archaeology merit badges. All completed the workshop component which included a day of lectures, presentations by Scouts on family heirlooms, a tour of the Crownsville Artifact Processing Lab, and experimental archaeology using atlatls. Most were also able to complete their fieldwork component last Sunday at Merkle Wildlife Managments Area, but a few will take advantage of the Field Session in Oldtown and other opportunities to wrap up their fieldwork requirement. Thanks to the parents, scout leaders, MHT staff, and ASM volunteers who helped make this happen again in 2024! #publicarchaeology #boyscoutsofamerica #archaeology #archeology #archaeologylovers #archaeologymeritbadge

Colourful World of Mosaics Mosaics are both an aesthetic element that decorates a space and a structural element that provides insulation. However, mosaics are also among the most important data providing information about the daily life of the period in which they were made. This issue will take you on a journey exploring the story of the development of mosaics, starting from the earliest examples, the small terracotta cones that adorned the surfaces of palace walls in the ancient Sumerian city of Uruk, to the most elaborate decorations of Byzantine culture. Victory Stele of Naram-Sin of Akkad, c. 2230 BC. It shows him defeating the Lullibi, a tribe in the Zagros Mountains, and their king Satuni, trampling and impaling them.⠀ .⠀ Satuni, standing to the right, is begging Naram-Sin to save him. Naram-Sin is twice the size of his soldiers. If the warrior-king was an actual giant being or the stelae is simply a metaphor alluding to his greatness is a matter of interpretation. What's interesting is that ancient writings from different geographic regions speak of giant humans up to 13.5 feet tall (4.1m). ⠀ .⠀ The Epic of Gilgamesh describes the journey of such a giant, while the Bible mentions multiple tribes (cultures) that were ruled by giants or had giant inhabitants. - 📸 Via 📷: Unknown, tag to credit! - Tag someone who needs to see this💙 - 🛍️𝗦𝗛𝗢𝗣 𝗡𝗢𝗪🔥𝗟𝗜𝗡𝗞 𝗜𝗡 𝗠𝗬 𝗕𝗜𝗢👆🏻𝗪𝗼𝗿𝗹𝗱𝘄𝗶𝗱𝗲 𝗦𝗵𝗶𝗽𝗽𝗶𝗻𝗴✈️ - - - - #ancientarchitecture #museumgram #ancientcity #archeology #ancienthistory #ancientknowledge #archeologie #ancientcivilization #archeological #ancientruins #antikacı #arkeoloji #archeologia #archaeologicalexcavation #lostcivilization #arkeology #antiquearchaeology #arkeofili #ancientrockart #archaeologylovers #antiktarih #arkeo #acient #ancientgreekhistory #archaeologistsofinstagram #ancientroman

Join us on Thursday, June 27, 8:00 p.m. for a Zoom talk by Dr. James Rietveld on the "Mystery Cults of Ancient Greece and Rome" discussing Eleusis, Dionysus, the Phrygian Magna Meter, Mithras, and Serapis with Isis, which greatly influenced modern magickal traditions and personal power systems. Pay What You Wish: https://www.eventbrite.com/e/907235384457 Mystery Religions or Cults always raise an eyebrow or two when brought up within public and academic contexts inclusive of the Mysteries of Ancient Greece and Rome, where, traced back to the seventh century BCE, they increased in popularity following the conquests of Alexander the Great. Mystery Cults in Antiquity had initiations, vows, secret rites, esoteric knowledge, magic words, votive offerings, and emphasized the importance of personal choice in one's beliefs rather than what was expected by society. But the mysteries were only powerful as one's belief in them, so faith became a key component for effectiveness, enabling a person able to successfully meet the challenges of everyday life, and ultimately offering salvation for the soul. Journey with us to discover the roots of today's occult philosophy, ceremonial magick, and modern personal empowerment systems, in the ancient practices and traditions which influenced Aleister Crowley, Ordo Templi Orientis, and Freemasonry. This talk is definitely not a one to be missed! This lecture will be posted on the Dr. James Rietveld Salon Lecture You Tube channel, where you can also watch previous lectures: https://www.youtube.com/@dr.jamesrietveldsalonlectu2903 Dr. James Rietveld is a professor at CSU, Fullerton and Cal Poly Pomona, CA of History, Anthropology, Religion with a PHD from Claremont School of Religion, is author of two books, and can be seen on History channel's "Crazy Rich Ancients." #ipsofacto #ipsfoactostore #drjamesrietveld #salonlecture #salonlectures #onlinelecture #historytalk

SCIENTISTS DISCOVER 500,000-YEAR-OLD ARTEFACT THAT 'REWRITES EARLY HUMAN HISTORY' Science continually challenges our understanding of the past, and a recent revelation shakes the foundations of early human history. Researchers unveil a 500,000-year-old artefact found in Kalambo Falls, Zambia, reshaping our perception of ancient civilisations. The artefact, a wooden tool intricately shaped with notches and tapered ends, was remarkably preserved due to unique geological conditions. Through Infrared Stimulated Luminescence dating, experts determine its age at 476,000 years, predating the emergence of Homo sapiens. This discovery suggests advanced cognitive abilities among early hominin species, possibly Homo heidelbergensis or an even older ancestor. Lead archaeologist Larry Barham reflects, "These people were doing something new and large from wood. They used their intelligence, imagination, and skills to create something they'd never seen before." This find challenges conventional notions of the "stone age," highlighting the sophistication of ancient craftsmanship and the ingenuity of early humans long before recorded history.

UNRAVELLING THE MYSTERY BEHIND THE STONE OF SCONE The Stone of Scone, steeped in Scottish monarchy lore, has long intrigued historians. Recent insights shed new light on its origins, challenging age-old legends. Legends link the stone to Fergus Mór mac Eirc, an ancient Scottish ruler, who purportedly brought it from Ireland around AD 501. However, its roots may stretch further, with some associating it with Jacob from the Book of Genesis. Seized by Edward I of England during the First Scottish War of Independence, the stone resided in Westminster Abbey until 1996, when it returned to Scotland. A recent study suggests the stone originated from the Scone area, possibly serving as a step in a church or Roman building. Dr Nicki Scott of HES notes the worn surface contradicts traditional theories, hinting at a different purpose. This revelation adds another layer to Scotland's rich history, fuelling ongoing fascination with the enigmatic Stone of Scone.
