Shared my perspective about Xi Jinping's visit to Europe in The Point – CGTN, hosted by the esteemed Liuxininbeijing The voyage serves as the perfect barometer of the current state of China-EU relations. Despite the various agreements and promises made, the core issues causing tension in the relationship remain unresolved. A key takeaway is the substantial time gap since Xi last visited Europe, considering its vital role as a major trading partner. This catches the eye, particularly when considering Europe's active efforts to strengthen this relationship. Over the past 18 months, leaders from European institutions and prime ministers from member states have been making frequent trips to Beijing. Secondly, Xi’s itinerary encompassed visits to France, Serbia, and Hungary. Given the importance of symbolic gestures in Chinese diplomacy, it’s crucial to capture the rationale behind this unconventional selection. Ms. Liu adeptly highlighted the situation: EU 'undercapacity', or China 'overcapacity'? My answer is straightforward: it's a blend of both factors. Furthermore, while there are disagreements among #Germany, #France, & the President of the European Commission regarding views on #China, there is consensus on the impact of China's #overcapacity on the single market. After an engaging exchange of opinions. I highlighted how the #EU has ramped up scrutiny of China through anti-subsidy investigations, targeting critical sectors. In response, China has employed diplomatic strategies and implemented retaliatory measures, like export restrictions on critical raw materials, to punish European #derisking efforts. While Xi's visit addresses a diplomatic need, none of the discussed issues are ready for immediate change. This repeated pattern has become more and more evident, as EU leaders raised similar concerns with Xi in December 2023, yet progress has been minimal, despite assurances. Entitled “Views from Berlin on Scholz in China and Macron’s Europe”, we debated the relationship between #Europe -especially #Germany- and #China. Our intense discussion spun around a possible adjustment of Germany’s #ChinaStrategy against #decoupling and #derisking. Additionally, we discussed China’s central role in solving the war in #Ukraine. During our deep and frank exchange we also spoke about China’s current challenges and difficulties. We concluded that overgeneralizations on any of these complex issues must be avoided. Oil major Shell has announced a strategic emphasis on thorough derisking measures before committing significant capital investments in Namibia’s offshore oil and gas sector. Shell’s CEO Wael Sawan said the company’s cautious stance towards exploration and development activities in the region, prioritises thorough risk assessment to safeguard shareholder interests. “Our objective is to tap into basins where we feel we possess a genuine competitive edge. This has been particularly evident in the Atlantic Basin, where we leverage resources from the Gulf of Mexico, Brazil, and Nigeria, extending our reach into places like Namibia. We intend to continue expanding in these areas, focusing our efforts where we can achieve the highest return on investment,” he said during Shell’s first quarter 2024 results presentation. La autonomía estratégica #energética de la #UE va a pasar por diferentes etapas hasta conseguir reducir la dependencia de #China en su proceso de #derisking. En cuestión de #paneles solares, China concentra el 80% de la capacidad de producción, siendo Europa el destino de casi el 50% de las exportaciones del gigante asiático. Recuperar parte de la manufactura a territorio comunitario requiere no solo de apostar por una estrategia de onshoring, sino de impulsar y fomentar la innovación energética para aportar tecnología energética de vanguardia competitiva. En cuestión de movilidad sostenible, el cambio de paradigma comienza a imponerse, convirtiéndose China en el principal hub de exportación de vehículos eléctricos ( #VEs) hacia Europa, tanto de marcas extranjeras como locales. El mercado europeo supone ya el 19,5% de los VEs ensamblados en China en 2023. La previsión es que se alcance el 25,3% en 2024, según la estimación de T&E, y casi la mitad serán marcas chinas, suponiendo el 11%. Un porcentaje que se duplicará en apenas tres años, pasando a representar las marcas chinas el 20% de los VEs vendidos en Europa en 2027, impactando directamente sobre la autonomía estratégica de Europa mientras la consolidación de la industria impulsará la instalación de fábricas chinas en el mercado europeo. En este cambio de ciclo para la UE, en el que se está redefiniendo un nuevo modelo de globalización, las materias primas críticas se han convertido en una palanca geopolítica que comienza a ser decisiva, haciendo que el factor geopolítico impacte directamente sobre la cadena de suministro. Spätestens seit den Medikamentenknappheiten während Corona und der plötzlichen Gasknappheit als Resultat des russischen Angriffskriegs auf die Ukraine, ist uns allen bewusst, welche drastischen Folgen Abhängigkeiten von anderen Staaten haben können. Doch viele dieser Abhängigkeiten sind zunächst vielleicht gar nicht so offensichtlich, können aber verheerende Dominoeffekte nach sich ziehen. Umso wichtiger ist es diese zu erkennen, um vorbeugende Maßnahmen ergreifen zu können und dann im Krisenfall handlungsfähig zu sein. Dieses Verfahren nennt man De-Risking. Damit die Stadt Aachen für künftige Krisen besser gerüstet ist, haben wir als Fraktion DIE Zukunft einen Antrag zum Aufstellen einer städtischen De-Risking Strategie eingebracht. Hierbei soll zunächst eine Analyse der bestehenden Abhängigkeiten erfolgen. Auf die Ergebnisse der Analyse aufbauend soll dann ein Plan erstellt werden, der Ziele und Maßnahmen zur Reduktion der identifizierten Abhängigkeiten definiert. Diese Maßnahmen sollen durch enge Rücksprache mit den beteiligten Interessensgruppen in Einklang mit den Bedürfnissen dieser gebracht werden. Die Umsetzung soll durch den Stadtrat geprüft und kontinuierlich überwacht werden. In età moderna, la parola Leviatano indica l’autorità che regola e fonda il vivere associato: lo Stato. Così, da creatura degli abissi si trasforma nel gigante che domina la società umana. Il Leviatano è riemerso dalle profondità in cui era stato spinto da quarant’anni di liberismo: dalla pandemia di Covid, qualcosa è cambiato. Siamo entrati in un mondo nuovo. Un mondo in cui è sfiorita la retorica che celebrava la globalizzazione. Un mondo in cui lo Stato si riappropria progressivamente delle sue funzioni di indirizzo della politica economica. C’è una parola che più di altre riassume – a livello globale – i dodici mesi appena trascorsi. Questa parola è derisking e indica la riduzione del rischio con cui il mondo occidentale ha deciso di allentare la dipendenza dal mercato cinese. Il derisking si traduce in un forte intervento dello Stato per mettere in sicurezza l’economia americana ed europea. Tuttavia, ci sono state circostanze difficili nel 2023. Una, particolarmente significativa, è stata la crisi bancaria della California a marzo. Quando le azioni della Silicon Valley Bank sono crollate di 62 punti, provocando una corsa al ritiro dei depositi e chiudendo in poche ore i battenti per mancanza di liquidità. È poi esploso il dibattito intorno alle possibilità e ai rischi dell’Intelligenza artificiale. Nel quadro del derisking, Stati Uniti ed Europa si sono attivati per tracciare un perimetro di regole con cui arginare l’Intelligenza Artificiale. Così, si è tornati a parlare del contenimento di una nuova tecnologia. Il nuovo anno risponderà a molti dubbi posti da questo 2023. Il 2024 ha già in calendario due appuntamenti elettorali decisivi: le elezioni europee, con la forza dell’ondata sovranista che proverà a riversarsi sul Vecchio Continente; e le Presidenziali americane. Next on #ManagingAsia, I talk to Loh Chin Hua, the man changing history and driving the transformation of Singapore’s @keppelcorporation into a global asset manager to focus more on recurring income. He launched Vision 2030 a few months into the pandemic with the goal of growing assets under management to 200 billion Singapore dollars by the end of the decade. The massive restructuring involved the painful divestment of its legacy offshore and marine business to focus on sustainable urban solutions like green retrofitting the existing built environment, investing in upstream and downstream capabilities of new energy sources like green hydrogen and green ammonia and finding renewable and green solutions to energy intensive data centers. He also touched on acquisitions and his latest move to acquire a 50 pecent stake in leading European asset manager Aermont Capital and his overall strategy to de-risk from China. I asked Loh how he is leading the changes as he shifts the group away from a conglomerate structure into a simplified horizonal model. I also brought up the Group’s recent corruption and bribery scandals and asked him about the compliance procedures & protocol he’s putting in place. Having been with the Group since 2002 and working his way up the ranks to become CEO in 2014, he says his job at #Keppel has always been one of constant change and reinvention as the Group has always had to evolve and adapt to the times.
