Stones River Rostrum, Gouache on cut Yupo paper on watercolor paper, 8” x 8”. This rostrum overlooks the Stones River National Cemetery. For this series I created white silhouettes on black paper to show the juxtaposition of the violent history of the Battle of Stones River, and the peaceful nature that occupies this space now. This also refers to enslavement and freedom, manmade and natural objects, the north and south, and the unfinished painting represents the lives cut short on the battlefield, and all the unknown details that disappear with time. I wanted to show what memory looks like. #stonesrivernationalbattlefield #artistresidency #findyourpark #nationalparkservice #murfreesboro #tennessee #silhouette #rostrum #stonesrivernationalcemetery #civilwar @stonesrivernps @doitonyupo @liquitexofficial @arrtxart

We have a new episode of our history series: Voices of North Manitou. This series explores the history of the North Manitou Island in the Sleeping Bear Dunes National Lakeshore through the people who have lived, worked, played, and been a part of island life over the years. Bob and Sara Zielesch spent many years vacationing on North Manitou Island during the 60s and 70s, and came back as campers in the 90s, and became long-serving volunteers. Andersonville National Historic Site is the only national park serving as a memorial to all American prisoners of war. Once filled with desolation, despair, and death, it now offers a place for remembrance and reflection. Drive and walk the grounds of Andersonville - the Prison Site, where nearly 13,000 Civil War Union soldiers died in just under 14 months; the National POW Museum, dedicated to American soldiers who suffered captivity in all wars; and the National Cemetery, a final resting place for our veterans. Established in 1960, Andersonville National Historic Site has three main features: The National POW Museum, which also serves as a Visitor Center; the Prison Site; and Andersonville National Cemetery. 1. The POW Museum: Start your visit here. A short film and various exhibits describe both the Civil War prison camp and the hardships, experiences, and sacrifices of American POW's throughout history. 2. The Prison Site: Camp Sumter - commonly known as Andersonville - was hastily built in early 1864. It was originally intended to hold 10,000 men in a 16.5 acre pen within a 15' high stockade wall and two gates. Its numbers reached a staggering 32,000 by August of that same year. Confined soldiers suffered terribly from overcrowding, poor sanitation, and inadequate food. Most prisoners died from disease, starvation, or exposure. (Fact: A POW was more likely to die than a soldier in combat.) 3. Andersonville National Cemetery: Established in July 1865, the National Cemetery is a permanent resting place of honor for deceased veterans. The first interments, in February 1864, were soldiers who died in the adjacent prison camp. (They were buried shoulder-to-shoulder in open trenches in Sections E,F, H, J, and K.) The National Cemetery is still very much an active site. As I was walking the grounds, there were two scheduled services that day, as well as grounds crews preparing graves for future use. . . #civilwar #civilwarhistory #prison #pow #Cemetery #nationalparkservice #historicsite #learnsomethingnew

Fun to enjoy some good old fashioned sightseeing the other weekend in New York City on a harbor cruise to the Statue of Liberty and Ellis Island 🗽it’s incredible how many National Park Service sites pepper every corner of this country. I was especially moved by the immigration museum at Ellis Island — so many interesting stories that reminded me in an authentic way of what has been created over the last couple hundred of years in the USA… real stories instead of political talking points. I could have stayed there all day long and intend to go back with more time, hopefully in the near future… NY is my favorite city by far (Paris a close second!) I’m sure many of you who’ve been feel the same :-) thx for the lead pic @jonathan_irish 😘✨ #nationalparkservice @statueellisnps #manhattan #newyork #nationalmonuments #nationalpark #ladyliberty #sightseeing #nyc #shotoniphone #findyourpark #exploreeverything

A spectacular man-made engineering marvel, the Hoover Dam and the water reservoir Lake Mead. Since about 8000 years before their existence, this one and a half million acres of land was once occupied by several Native American tribes. In the 1930s, the dam was build to control floods, irrigation, and supply water to the populations in the dry western states. The construction though heavily affected the natural river ecosystem and the Indigenous communities, who lost a majority of their sacred ancestral sites and agricultural lands, thus forced to relocate or work in dam construction. Today, this land is situated in the Numic and Yuman indigenous areas, specifically Hualapai, Southern Paiute, Zuni, Mohave, and Hopi. The tribal members along with several researchers and the national park service are working hard to preserve the remaining archeological, spiritual, indigenous, and natural history of this beautiful land. @lakemeadnps @nationalparkservice #hooverdam #lakemead #oneearth #yourshotphotographer #naturelovers #southernpaiute #hopi #hualapai #zuni #mohave #hopi #sanjuansouthernpaiutetribe #indigenous #tribes #nativeamerican #nevada #redrocks #coloradoriver #arizona #nationalparkservice

Have you ever visited the Vietnam Women’s Memorial at @nationalmallnps? During the Vietnam War, women served in many different roles. Many women served as nurses and physicians, while others acted as air traffic controllers, communication specialists, and intelligence officers. The Vietnam Women’s Memorial was established to honor the women who risked their lives to serve their country. Diane Carlson Evans, RN, the founder and President Emeritus of the Vietnam Women’s Memorial Foundation, worked with others to establish a statue portraying women’s strength, compassion, courage, and service on the hallowed ground of the Vietnam Veterans Memorial. Every Memorial Day and Veterans Day, women veterans bring the bronze sculpture to life by sharing their stories and uniting generations of women who have served their nation. On Memorial Day, visitors can attend a Vietnam Women’s Memorial storytelling program from 10am - 11:30am, followed by a ceremony at 1pm. Head over to vietnamwomensmemorial.org to learn more and plan your visit. #vietnamwomensmemorial #americasnationalparks #nationalparkservice #memorialday #yourparkstory @nationalparkservice

The @nationalparkservice and the Friends of the @wwiimemorial hosted a moving ceremony honoring the 79th anniversary of the May 8th victory in Europe. The morning featured a presentation of colors, national anthems and musical tributes, a presentation of medals to US servicemen and women from the French military, a "Parade of Heroes" and a presentation of wreaths. Together, under the summer sun, WWII veterans, students, military men and women, civilians, civil servants and Ambassadors of France and Ukraine sat side-by-side. From different generations, nations and vocations, those present were united by a common desire to see peace in Europe–in 1945 and in 2024. #France #French #Franceintheus #FrenchEmbassy #WashingtonDC #NationalParkService #NPS #WWIIMemorial #Washington #DC #WWII #WWIIVeteran #Veteran #VEDay #VictoryinEuropeDay

Wood frog (𝘓𝘪𝘵𝘩𝘰𝘣𝘢𝘵𝘦𝘴 𝘴𝘺𝘭𝘷𝘢𝘵𝘪𝘤𝘶𝘴). As the snow and ice melt, leaf litter from the past fall is exposed, and water fills ephemeral ponds. Frogs congregate here to breed but the outcome of their young may be dependent on the exposed fall leaves. During their tadpole stage, frogs are herbivores, feeding on algae and decomposing leaf litter. The leaves from certain trees, like maple, as well as sedges and cattails, release polyphenolics. These are chemicals that interfere with the tadpole’s ability to process the thyroid hormones needed for metamorphosis, impacting their development. Wetlands dominated by trees like ash trees with lower concentrations of polyphenolics have frogs growing larger, faster and with a lower mortality rate than other wetlands. Unfortunately, with the introduction of the emerald ash boror, a species of beetle from Eurasia that targets ash tree, over a billion ash trees have died. As the beetles spread, Ash trees become replaced by maple and other species, impacting the development of local frogs and forest communities. _____________________________________________ Shot on a Canon 90D with a Canon EF 50mm F1.8 STM, a Godox TT685C flash unit and a Lumpna flash diffuser _____________________________________________ ISO 100 ƒ4.5 1/160s

Happy Designation Day! On #ThisDayInHistory – May 8, 1987 – the Santa Fe Trail was officially designated a National Historic Trail! Designation was a long process. When the National Trails System Act of 1968 became law, it listed the Santa Fe Trail as one of 14 potentially significant trails that should be considered for designation. In 1976, the former Bureau of Outdoor Recreation determined the Santa Fe Trail was nationally significant and should be recognized. In early 1986, the Oregon-California Trails Association (OCTA) began working to introduce a bill to designate the Santa Fe Trail as part of the National Trails System. In 1987, the bill passed the House of Representatives on March 10 and the Senate on April 22. The designation became official when President Ronald Reagan signed the bill on May 8. The National Park Service was chosen as the administering agency for the Trail, and through partnerships with federal, state, and local governments, private landowners, and cooperating groups, the NPS works to protect, promote, and interpret the Trail. #santafetrail #santafetrailassociation #nationalparkservice #newmexico

Congratulations Linda! I wish you and I had a book like this in 2017 when you helped my daughter and I plan our National Parks Walkabout.
