The Freedom to Learn Forum 2024 will take place at East Kent Sudbury in Deal from Friday 15th August to Sunday 18th August. Inspired by Open Space technology, participants of all ages co-create the schedule, and participants host activities, workshops or games, and initiate discussion circles on a wide range of themes. This week the WCSB will talk about their new library materials policy. State law has made several changes over the last few years & the Board needs to ensure that their policy complies with state law while maintaining our students' right to intellectual freedom. Banning books is censorship. It takes away our freedom to choose what we read & limits our exposure to different experiences & perspectives. Books spark critical thinking & challenging ideas lead to growth and progress. Books offer diverse voices, & everyone deserves to see themselves reflected in the stories they read. Books help us understand the world. Reading about difficult topics allows us to process them in a safe space. I Trust Our Educators: They are the Key to Unlocking a World of Learning Our teachers & librarians are superheroes. Every day, they inspire young minds, ignite a passion for knowledge, & equip students with the critical thinking skills they need to succeed. So why are we making it harder for them to do their jobs? @lawyerscomm On Tuesday, a federal court issued a ruling on the controversial classroom censorship provision of the Arkansas’ LEARNS Act, Section 16. The court upheld student’s right to receive information and ideas and issued a partial injunction, prohibiting Arkansas from disciplining Ms. Ruthie Walls and Mr. Colton Gilbert, teachers and plaintiffs in the case, from simply teaching about Critical Race Theory (CRT), using CRT or parts of CRT to teach other topics, or referencing parts of CRT in their teachings. The Lawyers’ Committee for Civil Rights Under Law and civil rights attorneys Mike Laux and Austin Porter Jr. filed a complaint and motion for preliminary injunction against Governor Sarah Huckabee Sanders and the state of Arkansas on behalf of the Arkansas State Conference of the NAACP, two Little Rock teachers and two students attending the historic Central High School. The plaintiffs are challenging the constitutionality of Arkansas’ controversial classroom censorship law and the discriminatory treatment of students taking the Advanced Placement (AP) African American Studies course in public schools.
