This week, the United Nations Security Council held a moment of silence for the Iranian President, known as ‘The Butcher of Iran,’ a man who ran a genocidal regime and was accused of widespread human rights abuses. I have experienced firsthand the brutal reality of living under the Islamic Republic. All Iranians, but particularly Baha’is, along with women and minorities, have faced relentless persecution for more than 40 years. In my humble opinion, this regime does not deserve the honor and respect that a moment of silence at the UN and the lowering of its flag conveys. Iran’s influence extends beyond its borders, fueling conflicts and supporting groups like Hamas, which perpetuate violence and suffering across the Middle East. The regime’s involvement in regional destabilization underscores its role as a major culprit behind much of the collective suffering in the area. The UN’s gesture of silence is not just misplaced but deeply offensive. It disrespects the memory of the countless victims of the Iranian regime’s brutality, including hundreds who were killed under Raisi’s rule for protesting the unjust killing of Mahsa Amini, the Woman Life Freedom movement. It sends a dangerous message that the international community is willing to overlook human rights abuses for the sake of diplomatic niceties. Why not a moment of silence and the lowering of the flag for all those killed by Raisi and his boss, Khamenei? We must not forget the innocent lives destroyed by this regime. And that they continue to destroy. They are the ones that the UN should be mourning. Honoring a genocidal regime is a betrayal of our shared values of justice and human dignity. We must hold oppressive governments accountable and stand in solidarity with the victims of their crimes. Civil rights organizations have long been an important part of the fabric of The United States of America. Formalized organizations with the purpose of advocating for the legal rights of specific groups within the political framework of our nation began in the latter half of the nineteenth century and saw major growth in the early years of the twentieth century. Some of the most influential organizations working today saw their birth during these time periods, such as the Anti-Defamation League, the National Association for the Advancement of Colored People, and the American Civil Liberties Union. Many of these organizations came about to help rectify historic injustices faced by members of their community. But this is far from the only purpose of civil rights organizations. The Church of Jesus Christ of Latter-day Saints itself has often acted as the primary focus for efforts to advocate for Latter-day Saints. But it’s a religious, not a civil rights organization. And its public affairs arm is by its nature suited for response, not advocacy. There are a handful of individual voices that note civil rights issues related to Latter-day Saints, who have drawn notable if moderate followings on social media, but even these individuals tend to be more focused on devotional and cultural issues. And their efforts lack the kind of structure and planning that a single organization can provide. We believe it is time for a civil rights organization to be founded specifically to advocate for the rights of Latter-day Saints in political, legal, and cultural spaces.
