Crazy day at work today 🤣🤣🤣 working on an Army base that's been in use since ww1. The first thing you see driving through the gates "explosives kill, do not pick up ANYTHING". Well we got to the job site and removed one of the two trees we had to take down. As I walked to the last tree to head up and get started on the removal, I look down and see this BETWEEN my feet. Turns out to be an m19a1 white phosphorus rifle grenade. We reported it to the office up front and needless to say our job site was shut down until e.o.d. can come detonate it. They said it was either cs gas or white phosphorus 😬😬😬😬 and it's just been sitting there for ATLEAST 50 years in the elements. So that last post was my December wrap up. Then I was in a car accident. THEN I had an unrelated, planned surgery in the middle of January. The recovery didn’t go well. The accident was nothing by comparison. And possibly a new medication made things even worse. At any rate, I missed January, February and March. I started going on short hunts again at the beginning of April when I felt up to it, and had some good luck. I think it started with a good luck token that cleaned up amazingly well. It says “Lucky and Kenny 6 3 53”. It’s my favorite token so far. I also found a sweet coin spill with a mercury dime, silver Roosevelt dime and two wheat pennies. I got a cool little silver flower ring too. Finally, I got my first hem or curtain weight — a lead disc sewn into clothes or drapes to keep them hanging in place; well over a hundred years old. I’m still having a lot of not so good days when I can’t do anything, but I’m grateful to have gotten out as much as I did in April. #metaldetectingmassachusetts

Saved a beautiful cast iron tubular hanging scale from the ground last weekend! I haven’t found one of these yet and just love the brass plate on it. Because it goes up to roughly 30lbs it was probably either used for rough weighing things on the farm or in the kitchen. 2nd pic is what it may have looked like in its glory days. This is a hunt from a few weeks ago. I drove by one of my old permissions I haven't hit in a while. It is 2 acres of an old 1830s farm and home. Only about an acre was groomed and swingable, the other acre was very over grown and only had small gaps here and there. I had pulled targets out of the small openings so I knew there were targets I was being blocked from by the over growth. They had clear cut the entire 2nd acre. While exploring the property of the 1800’s tombstone maker, I discovered the key plate of his shop door. Love the look of this and the skeleton key lock. Everything back then just looked more intentional in its design. They could have simply made this a flat plate but no, this plate has embossing around the lock. A recent hunt I went on that yielded some incredible quality finds! I went back to one of my old reliable permissions, and did a different section of the yard that I have previously deemed as “fill” dirt. Apparently I was wrong. -First signal as I walked over turned out to be a 1795 liberty cap large cent. After that the finds kept coming! I got my first ever “Eagle A” button with an awesome back mark that reads “Robinsons Extra”. I also got 4 Mercs, a musket ball, a matron head large cent, and another latten spoon bowl from a different area of the yard. That makes 2 or 3 from that one site alone! Still looking for a coin from the same date range of the spoon bowl at that site. More finds from a few more hunts I went on. -The highlight and definitely my favorite find of the year so far has to be this absolutely beautiful KG1 from 1724, exactly 300 years old! Got a few more coppers plus 2 Indians. -The cut braided hair large cent was found only about 10 feet away from the matron. If you see where I marked up the photo, the cut on the braided aligns exactly with a line that was carved into the matron. Almost like it looks like it was being marked to be cut. When I flipped it over, you can see a line runs through it horizontally and diagonally, dividing it into 4 pieces. Say what you want, but I’d like to think this coin was prepared to be cut, but lost before they had the chance! -They used to cut coins to make change back in the day. Finding the already cut braided hair only 10 feet from it can almost confirm my theory! Long Live The President! -Here is the George Washington button I found last December all cleaned up. I honestly didn’t do much to it. By the time I took it home most of the dirt had already flaked off and revealed that orangish color that it is now. I very lightly flaked the rest of what I could off of the face of the button. -The ground did a number to it over the past 200+ years. It extremely thin and fragile. Whoever lost this had put another hole in it for some reason. Most likely to sew it back onto their coat after the shank broke, as these buttons weren’t cheap to buy back in the day! -Words can’t express how grateful I am for finding this. It will forever be one of the prized possessions in my collection, and it even has its own little case now. This has been at the top of my bucket list for years, and honestly I never thought I’d actually find one. First spoon pulled out of the ground! This particular spoon was known as a “fiddle handle” spoon since the shape of the handle, resembles a fiddle. Midgetoys strikes again! This time as an oil tanker. This was my third Midgetoy in two weeks, having never dug any before. The oil tanker was sold as a set on with an engine, a caboose, and other cars. Two brothers in Rockford who used their machine shop to support the U.S. war effort in WWII were looking for ways to keep their business viable after the war ended. They were making dies for General Motors and for the Structo Toy Company when they decided to try making their own line of small toy trucks, midgets next to the big Structos. Their biggest competitor was Tootsietoy, and they were able to keep the prices of Midgetoys a few cents lower than the Tootsies. Al and Earl Herdklotz manufactured all types of toy vehicles, but the ones they were most proud of were their four different carded train sets. Earl got the idea to make trains while sitting in St. Paul’s Union Depot. Random assortment of finds from December- February. -The first coin is a king William 3rd half penny in horrible condition found December 2023. Then I found 3 large cents near a cellar hole. One is a wiped draped bust, and 2 matron heads 1820 and 1833. -Then a shoe buckle chape and another frame that I snapped in half and glued back together. I finally got out digging one day this week (50 in Wisconsin in February is UNHEARD of!) I dug this at the same property that I found the Dovers Bank of Illinois watch FOB with the bull last Fall. This is from a medal company, Whitehead and Hoag, that was around from the late 1800’s to around WWII. Interesting history with this company. When they were bought out by a competing company, the competing company apparently destroyed all the dies and records of Whitehead and Hoag, some think vengefully. It’s a strange medal though and I still can’t fully figure it out so, after this, this is all a hypothesis. It’s the state of WI seal but it has the HRHA logo in the middle. HRHA stands for Royal Hibernian council of Arts. And the first H possibly means Honorary. So it may have been an award for an art show or something. I can’t another one on the Internet though. “Remember the Giver” I’ve found many interesting and personal items over the years but this is the most significant by far. Zachariah Brigden (b.1734-d.1787) was a prominent Boston silversmith who’s work and written records have been collected and studied by various institutions including Yale University, the Clark institute, and The Met. Sometime in the 1760’s he or one of his journeymen created this gold ring, in a style popular centuries earlier; the poesy ring. Borrowing the french for poem these gold rings feature a short romantic line engraved on the inside of the band. I don’t know exactly who wore this ring, but I know that person traveled 120 miles to the hills of western Massachusetts to settle a small homestead, now hidden in the woods, lost to time and all record. When I found this ring I knew of another Brigden Posey ring, found some 50-60 miles closer to Boston, by a detecting friend who is practically a neighbor. What are the odds? They are the only two Brigden posey rings that we are aware of existing. Yale has a incredible mourning ring, but that’s something a bit different. Truly the find of a lifetime for me. I was finally able to get out and swing the detector on the weekend for the first time in a couple of months, and man, did it feel good! I hit a permission I've hit close to a dozen times, and I'm still pulling old stuff! The land was the site of an old inn and tavern that were a common stop on the stage coach route. The inn is marked with the red blob in the roadside field, and the taverns cellar hole is marked by the red blob just further back in the tree line. The old road still runs through the woods and leads to multiple other home sites. Finally, I got a cheap little microscope to clean my coins and relics with. I've heard that 2 cent pieces are a little more durable and clean up well, so I decided to give my only 2 cent piece a touch-up. Man, did it clean up beautiful!!! I'll have to get better pictures later to really show the details better. Out hiking the power lines trying to find what locked the line out and came across what I believe was a beautiful old mill site. The size of the stones and the sheer size of the rubble pile of field stone at this site is amazing! More finds from the end of 2023. -I got 2 draped bust large cents, one is so mangled you can only make out the bust facing right on the front. It looks like it was pounded on with a hammer or something. Finds from the last 2 weeks of 2023. -The highlights include a 1782 half reale with an amazing reverse, a type 1 trime (1851-1853), and 2 beautiful old buckles. The broken one is sand cast and has an amazing patina.
