A view from Susitaival trail near Russian border to the west towards native Finland. Decades ago grandfathers lay on this isthmus on top of the ridge and kept the neighbors away. What might they think of this pretty lake scenery behind their backs? The ridge on the isthmus was already fortified in the fall of 1939 before the Winter War and depending on the time and place, it was either guarded and watched or fought without giving up. Finland's last great battle took place in Ilomantsi in August 1944, when the 21st brigade led by border general Raappana stopped the 289th division of the Red Army in this wilderness area. The Vickers 6-ton tank or Vickers Mark E, also known as the "Six-tonner", was a British light tank designed in 1928 in a private project at Vickers. Though not adopted by the British Army, it was picked up by several other armed forces, and licensed by the Soviet Union as the T-26. It was also the direct predecessor of the Polish 7TP tank. The British Army evaluated the Mark E, but rejected it, because it did not envision a tactical niche for such a vehicle, preferring a combination of medium tanks and tankettes. Vickers then started advertising the design to all buyers, and soon received a trickle of orders eventually including the USSR, Greece, Poland, Bolivia, Siam, Finland, Portugal, China and Bulgaria. The Soviets were also happy with the design and licensed it for production. However, in their case local production started as the T-26, and eventually over 12,000 were built in various versions. In 1939, during the Soviet-Finnish Winter War, the Finnish armoured forces consisted of around 32 obsolete Renault FT tanks, some Vickers-Carden-Lloyd Mk. IVs and Model 33s, which were equipped with machine guns, and 26 Vickers Armstrongs 6-ton tanks. Only 13 of these tanks managed to get to the front in time to participate in the battles. At the Battle of Honkaniemi on 26 February 1940, the Finns employed their Vickers tanks for the first – and only – time against Soviet armour during the Winter War. The results were disastrous. In 1941, the Finns rearmed their Vickers 6-ton tanks with Soviet 45 mm guns and re-designated them as T-26Es. These tanks were used by the Finnish Army during the Continuation War. Nineteen rebuilt Vickers tanks, along with 75 T-26s continued in Finnish service after the end of the Second World War. Simonov AVS-36 was a Russian Wunderwaffe of a firearm. A late 1930s infantry rifle with sniper- and light machine gun capabilities. So was the idea, at least. Was used in the Russo-Japanese clash at the Khalkhin Gol River in Mongolia, in the Spanish Civil War, and in the Winter War against Finland. Its reliability was questionable, price too high, and so was its complexity for a common soviet infantryman of the time. Discontinued in 1940 after just 65k pieces made and replaced with SVT-38, then SVT-40. But we're still fascinated by this overengineered marvel! Recently, we posted the later pattern of the model. Here comes the extremely rare early one, made in 1936. There were only a few thousand of them ever, who knows if a hundred still exist... Here with a fully original PE scope, also of 1936. The grave of 28-year-old Anders Häggman at Larsmo yesterday. Anders was killed during the Winter War, when the Soviets broke through the Mannerheim Line at Summa on 13 February 1940. Many of those buried around Anders died the same day. His heavy artillery battery, most of whom were from the Larsmo-Öja region, lost 32 men when their "Lisa" Bunker was surrounded and destroyed by the advancing Soviets. #Finland #WW2 #WinterWar

For the UK, the Buffalo was deemed as too inferior a fighter for service in Western Europe, and so it was despatched to Asia. There it did not fare well against the A6M and others, although there were some ‘aces’ on the type. In Finnish service by contrast, during the Winter War especially, the chunky fighter was the scourge of the Red Air Force - the Finnish top ace on the aircraft racked up some 39 kills. The Fins started off strong, whoopin dat ass, until the Reds started bombing the crap out of the Fins. This resulted in a peace treaty, which forced Finland to concede good chunks of territory. That was the 1st war, aka the Winter War. The 2nd war, the War of Continuation, started when the Nazis invaded the Soviet Union during Operation Barbarossa. Status update: . While waiting for a surgery having spent some time reading Kari Kallonen’s book Tähtilippu Talvisodassa. It tells almost all about the American-Finnish Legion which was a volunteer unit in 1940. . Interesting detail is that when the 1st Company was on its route to the front, the train was raided at the Kouvola railway station. Olli Puhakka and Italian volunteer Diego Manzocchi intercepted the Soviet formation. En total, se vendieron a Finlandia 44 aviones capturados de cinco subtipos con tres entregas entre el 23 de junio de 1941 y el 5 de enero de 1944. No todos eran del Trece de las existencias francesas se vendieron inicialmente a Noruega y fueron capturadas cuando los alemanes conquistaron ese país. A Molotov cocktail is a hand-thrown incendiary weapon consisting of a frangible container filled with flammable substances and equipped with a fuse. In use, the fuse attached to the container is lit and the weapon is thrown, shattering on impact. This ignites the flammable substances contained in the bottle and spreads flames as the fuel burns. Due to their relative ease of production, Molotov cocktails are typically improvised weapons. Their improvised usage spans criminals, gangsters, rioters, football hooligans, urban guerrillas, terrorists, irregular soldiers, freedom fighters, and even regular soldiers. A Molotov cocktail is a glass bottle containing a flammable substance such as petrol, alcohol or a napalm-like mixture and a source of ignition, such as a burning cloth wick, held in place by the bottle's stopper. The wick is usually soaked in alcohol or kerosene rather than petrol. Other flammable liquids, such as diesel fuel, methanol, turpentine, jet fuel, acetone, and rubbing alcohol, have been used in place of, or combined with, petrol. On November 30th, 1939, the Soviet Union attacked Finland, starting what came to be known as the Winter War. The Finnish perfected the design and tactical use of the petrol bomb. The fuel for the Molotov cocktail was refined to a slightly sticky mixture of alcohol, kerosene, tar, and potassium chlorate. Further refinements included the attachment of wind-proof matches or a phial of chemicals that would ignite on breakage, thereby removing the need to pre-ignite the bottle, and leaving the bottle about one-third empty was found to make breaking more likely. Molotov cocktails were eventually mass-produced by the Alko corporation at its Rajamäki distillery, bundled with matches to light them. A 500 ml bottle was filled with a mixture of petrol and paraffin, plus a small amount of tar. The basic bottle had two long pyrotechnic storm matches attached to either side.
