Iran’s Supreme Leader Ayatollah Ali Khamenei led the funeral prayer for President Seyyed Ebrahim Raisi, Foreign Minister Hossein Amirabdollahian, and other senior officials who perished in a helicopter crash. The ceremony took place at the University of Tehran. Iranian media reported that Hamas’ Qatar-based leader, Ismail Haniyeh, attended the funeral and expressed condolences on behalf of Palestinian resistance groups. Over 40 high-level foreign delegations, including 10 heads of state and more than 30 ministers and senior officials, participated in the funeral. Haniyeh remarked that President Raisi supported the Palestinian cause and believed the ‘Al-Aqsa Storm’ significantly impacted Israel. The crash occurred three days prior, amid heavy fog in the Varzaghan region of East Azerbaijan province, as the president’s helicopter was returning from a dam inauguration near the Azerbaijan border. All passengers, including Raisi, were declared dead after the charred wreckage was found on Monday. The bodies were moved to Tehran’s Mehrabad Airport on Tuesday after a funeral in Tabriz. President Raisi’s body will be buried in Mashhad. The crash also claimed the lives of Supreme Leader’s representative Ali Ale-Hashem, East Azerbaijan Governor Malek Rahmati, two bodyguards, two pilots, and a crew member. An investigation into the crash has been initiated, led by a committee headed by Brigadier Ali Abdollahi, and its findings will be made public. Iran is currently in mourning following this tragic event. Ghulam Hussain Ismaili, an officer in the president’s entourage, explained that weather conditions deteriorated during the flight, and the president’s helicopter disappeared 30 seconds after asking to fly higher to avoid clouds. Today I was over in Ryehill, Wakefield with the lovely Phil and his team at Normington and Sons paying tribute and celebrating the life of James Patrick Devlin. We marched James from his home to St James church, I led the hearse with dark island and flower of Scotland. I then played from the church and led James to the cemetery with amazing grace and Skye boat song. So pleased the sun shone, truly lovely family and so many compliments to the pipes and what they brought to the service. You'll find deep personal reflections about death, dying and grief as well as contributions from all sorts of people, in the form of "five things..." (E.g. Five Things I Wish Everyone Knew About Post Mortem Examinations, Five Things Nobody Tells You When an Unconscious Person is Going to Die) It really is a treasure trove of information and comfort. It's both practical (you'll probably only organise one or two funerals in your lifetime - here's where to start) and moving (I had several cries whilst reading). There's a very interesting section on the importance of funerals: who and what they're for (spoiler alert: they're not really for the person who's died) and how they impact the grieving process. There's a lot of helpful mythbusting about grief, about what death is like and what happens to dead bodies. And some sound advice about talking to children about death and dying. Therapists have to do their jobs looking through a lens that points towards the end, not just because clients often want and need to talk about death and dying, but because we hold professional wills from the day we begin to practice. Therapists must have plans in place in case they die suddenly, so that someone (usually their professional supervisor) can contact their clients and tell them what's happened, offer support and help transition them to another therapist if that's what they want.
