I feel so ill equipped as a death and grief worker right now. People have a hard enough time talking about death in general but mass, violent, hate-filled death? And involving children??? Where do I even begin? The visualization of violent deaths are foreign to most people, let alone seeing tiny bodies in the most horrendous of ways. I, as a death and grief guide who follows pathology assistants and has studied thanatology and have been bedside to little humans am struggling with the daily visuals of it all. To Grieve is to be human. Grief is sacred. And with the veil thinning we can alchemize our grief into inviting our dead to eat with us, to visit, to help us, to hold us and to amplify our prayers of hope, love and peace. I'll be inviting dead children and their families unknown to me, to my altar this year. For those of us who are bracing for this day without a mom, here are some ideas for how to mark the day that honors her memory but also provides loving support to ourselves and our loved ones: 1) Instead of sending her flowers, send them to yourself – or your siblings. 2) Cook one of her recipes. 3) Call your siblings and share classic “mom stories.” 4) Donate to or volunteer at a cause she supported. 5) Talk to friends about your mom, how you feel. It was nonstop rain during our LAX tournament this Sunday. We were cold; we were wet. But we were together. I was in the parking lot gathering yet another blanket when a woman looked at me and said “Ugh, isn’t this awful!” I think she was looking for someone to commiserate with. Oh boyyy did she complain to the wrong mother. I made eye contact and said “Well every time I’m in a place I wouldn’t have chosen with my girls. I think how lucky I am to be there. And I think of all the moms that have died and can’t be here.” I can read a room and so, I stopped there. I find myself in places I would not have planned — like the mall on a beautiful Sunday or an all day LAX tournament in the pouring rain or watching weekly piano lessons — and I think of the moms who unexpectedly died or the ones who were sick, expected to pass, and are no longer here. So, I’m grateful to be here. I’m happy my girls have me at the mall or on the sidelines or in the tiniest chair next to the piano. Instead of the ache that comes with not having a mother Earth-side. Steve Hodel entered the Los Angeles police academy, 16 years after Elizabeth Short’s death. When Steve Hodel turned 17, with his mother’s signed permission, he enlisted in the Navy and was stationed abroad. By 1961, Steve Hodel was back in Los Angeles, convinced by his new wife he applied to join the LAPD, which was hiring at a higher starting salary than what Steve Hodel was making as an orderly at Kaiser Hospital in Hollywood. In January 1963 came a strange phone call that led to an even stranger meeting. He was asked to meet in person with a captain in the personnel division at the LAPD headquarters. Hel knew something wasn’t right. “You have no business being a police officer,” Capt. Earle Sansing told Steve Hodel as soon as he sat him down. “I know all about your family and your father.” Presuming Sansing was referring to his father’s 1949 incest trial, Steve gave an impassioned plea: He was not his father. He knew nothing about the trial, other than his father had been acquitted and moved away soon after, and his mother never spoke of it. Perhaps it was Steve Hodel’s speech. Maybe it was the realization that Steve Hodel appeared to have no clue that his father was the prime suspect in LA’s biggest unsolved homicide. Sansing changed his mind by the end of the meeting. Our Wanstead Grief Cafes are back! We are delighted to be partnering once again with Redbridge Libraries for a series of monthly Good Grief Cafes at Wanstead Library. Our Grief Cafes are a supportive space to share, listen and connect with others around grief. The first one is taking place on Thursday 6th June at 6.30pm to 8.30pm and then on Thursday 18th July. After that, they'll be every first Thursday evening of the month. I was given the always incredible opportunity to create a custom piece for a wonderful person I met in St. Louis. Making custom creations so you can have exactly what your dream is, is easily one of my top favorite things about this path I’ve chosen. • This specially requested fox skull is perched atop a pile of obsidian, surrounded with lush moss, dried peonies, poppies, celosia plumes, and a magical piece of bark from my secret running spot in Nashville. The tiny mushrooms might be my favorite bits though 🖤 • The beautiful butterfly she chose is not pictured in the piece, as when ordering custom pieces, I haven’t figured out any way to keep them from getting destroyed while in transit. Old video but wanted to give you a resource on building your own ofrenda (altar) for the Day of the Dead. Why are ofrendas important especially at this time? It's so we don't forget. It's so we remember and honor those closest to us. It's so we honor and remember where we came from, who we came from and all the beings that touched our lives, animals included. Altars are also a way to honor groups of people that you may not know but want to show reverence for. If you're moved to build an altar for social justice, for peace and to honor those who have died tragic and traumatic deaths than please do so. For these altars red votive holders represent illuminated blood or bloodlines. White linens and table cloths represent cleansing and peace or innocence. Herbs like Rosemary and Basil are spirit opening herbs you can add and light at your altar or use to call on. Add small containers of water with salt to represent tears. Light white candles for children. And one large candle to represent mass death, black would be ideal. Red or burgundy flowers represent tragedy and sudden loss. Would love to see all your altar pics. Sorry for posting your tip late! I’ve been sick with a migraine but feeling better now. Hear your tip! I try to use body blocks with most of the people I embalm. However it may seem cold and uncomfortable for the recently deceased, proper positioning of the body is a crucial step if thorough preservation is to be achieved. My goal is to return dignity to the dead and by using these industry standard “body blocks” to elevate the body off the embalming table I am often able to reach a higher level of preservation and clean/disinfect the body much better. You might be wondering what is the benefit to a bereaved family? If I am able to fully preserve the body (including the undercarriage) there is less chance that the body will begin to permeate odor. It also allows for a more dignified bathing experience for the dead. I am able to wash and disinfect the back and buttocks with better success. I try to be creative when using body blocks and place them in areas that help to create an illusion of comfort. Often I place one under the hip to help straighten a contorted body. Mostly I use them in these three areas. 💀 Under the shoulder blades 💀 Under the lower back 💀Under the pelvis Pro Tip💀 Placing a body block under the lower back and pelvis allows for better distribution in the buttocks as it takes pressure off the major vessels. This is especially helpful in cases where excess weight is a consideration. Often times when people are in the dying process it’s difficult for caregivers to be able to clean and wash the loved one due to pain. I take great pride in being able to offer Thai valuable service to families and they always seem comforted knowing when I tell them that I will pay special attention to their loved ones bathing process. 🖤💀 Hope you like this week’s tip!
