“Here’s the deal: It’s normal to be curious about death. The way we talk about dying matters… 🖤 In honour of Hospice UK’s Dying Matters Awareness Week, the wonderful @sophieduffy05 has written a fantastic blog post on why talking about (and the way in which we talk about) dying matters. This is also something she explores in her incredible non-fiction debut D is for Death, out on the 29th June 👏 🖤💗🖤 D is for Death explores the mysteries of mortality as Sophie Duffy takes you on an unforgettable alphabetical journey through life’s ultimate enigma. From accidents and bodies, to contagion and ghosts, each letter unveils a new facet of our shared human experience with death. ‘When I was diagnosed with aggressive breast cancer during lockdown 2020, I started to write a book about death and our evolving attitudes to it in the UK. At a time of mass grief and personal trauma, I wanted to do something positive: to help prepare us, practically and emotionally, for our own death and for the death of others, expected or not. I am not an expert in any particular death area. I am not an undertaker, an archaeologist, a surgeon, or an end-of-life doula. Instead, I am a curator of death, drawing on different areas and disciplines to show the state of play of death and dying in modern Britain with a remit to help us become more death-positive.’ - Sophie Duffy This is such a fascinating book with such a unique concept and we are so looking forward to sharing it with you all 🧡 #books #bookstagram #bookworm #hero #nonfiction #newrelease #disfordeath #sophieduffy #preparedness #thewaywetalkaboutdyingmatters #hospiceuk #deathpositivity

When you watch a movie or tv show, what do you normally expect from a death scene? Shock? Violence? A confessional? You probably don’t see too much death positivity. At Cremstar, we are committed to rebranding death; where the focus is on conversations and preparation for when we die. Which is why we were excited to read a recent article in @michigandaily about the SXSW 2024 panel discussion: ‘Flipping the Script on End of Life’. The panel featured an exec producer, a hospice nurse and a screenwriter, and discussed the topic of death and the dangers of its inaccurate portrayals on screen. Read the entire article at michigandaily.com and search for “flipping the script”.

I want auroras and sad prose I want to watch wisteria grow right over my bare feet ‘Cause I haven’t moved in years And I want you right here A red rose grew up out of ice frozen ground With no one around to tweet it While I bathe in cliffside pools With my calamitous love and insurmountable grief . . . The wisteria vine ever enchanting, isn’t just beautiful, it’s bursting with symbolism! 💜 Longevity & Immortality: Some wisteria live over 1,200 years! A true show of enduring beauty. 💜 Secret Love: In Victorian times, wisteria whispered “thinking of you” to sweethearts. 💜 Strength & Sorrow: The drooping blooms symbolize both grief and resilience. 💜 Respect & Peace: In Japan, wisteria’s bowing branches represent honor and serenity. 💜 Love’s Many Forms: The “wisteria maiden” of Kabuki theater embodies passionate love. ESTHER WANTS WHAT WE ALL WANT: A DIGNIFIED DEATH Dame Esther Rantzen has lent her support over the years to @caudwellchildren’s mission to transform the lives of disabled children, in addition to the incredible work she’s done for her charities @childline_official, @thesilverlineuk and countless other causes. It seems so typical of Esther that, while battling terminal cancer, she’s using the time she has left for one more campaign. To give all of us what we deserve: a dignified death. I totally support Esther in decriminalising assisted dying. If I knew I only had months left to live, in pain and agony without a cure, like Esther, I would sign up to @dignitas. But I’d much rather have a peaceful death at home in England, surrounded by loved ones, than at a clinic in Switzerland. It makes no sense to me that we put our pets to sleep at the end of their lives, to prevent unnecessarily prolonged suffering, but deny the same compassion and kindness to our fellow humans. 👉 What do you think? #estherrantzen #assisteddying #dignityindeath

💀Spotted💀 @ Cemitério dos Prazeres. On the main street, in the first mausoleum to your left (if you're facing the Chapel), you can find this beautiful downward-pointing hand, the stricking decoration of an already beckoning pediment. In cemeterial art, the hand pointing downwards symbolizes the Burial, Death itself; it conveys a message of reunion with the soil, of crossing towards the Underworld, leaving for good all life at the Threshold of Death. A finger pointing down can symbolize, as well, and unexpected, sudden Death; since the finger pointing up can mean a soul ascending, the fingers pointing down can mean the Gods came to collect these souls. In many rituals in Cerimonial Magic, two fingers pointing down can connect the practitioners to the rule "As above, so Below". In this case, after an entire existence walking under the sun in the worlds Above, it's now announced the time to return to dust, Below. A brief entry in an article following up a fascinating episode of @cbcradiocanada podcast, The Current In an episode last week on "Deathbed Visions," @mattgallowayto interviews Dr.Chris Kerr (Chief Medical Officer and Chief Executive Officer of Hospice and Palliative Care Buffalo. Addition to speaking in great detail to the power (and various studies) of deathbed dreams and deathbed visions, Dr.Kerr asserts "Medicine's about curing, not comforting necessarily, when there's no cure." - And this is the sentiment I was asked to speak to for the follow-up written piece to accompany the podcast. • Canada won't let me post link, so here's what you gotta SEARCH for: "CBC The Current Deathbed Visions" That search term should take you to the full article, which I will also have linked up on the press section of my website, when I get to updating that section. Such a sweet gathering in The Parlor last night with funeral director, Clark Chu! It was really wonderful hearing about Clark’s experience in the funeral industry, and his clear passion for supporting families through deathcare. We covered topics from advice for entering the funeral industry, how to financially prepare for your own funerary care, what it means to “become a tree” and what a more better funeral industry could look like. When asked about ways he’d like to see the funeral industry improve, his answers focused on issues of access and inclusion. For families, he wishes accommodations like interpreters and wheelchair access in cemeteries were more widely available. For professionals, he pointed to high rates of burnout and ways that funerary work could be safer and more sustainable. What a wonderful way to set the tone for all of the amazing gatherings to come! #entertheparlor #theparlorpt #porttownsend #porttownsendwa #ptmainstreet #deathpositive #deathpositivity #deathpositivemovement #orderofthegooddeath #funeraldirector #funeralindustry

After a few polls, and lots of DMs, I’ve decided the best path for our next batch of ribbons is a preorder period. As many of you know, we keep selling out of batches faster and faster each time. In addition, a number of people have requested the ability to purchase a set of all three ribbons—which is now available with a small discount for purchasing the full set. A preorder period ensures that everyone can get a chance to get as many of whichever designs they’d like. It also helps us order the right amount of materials, avoiding further delays for you all or waste from overstock. This preorder period will be open for 1 week, from now until May 10th at midnight. NEW VIDEO: Death Denial in Terminally Ill: Denying Until the Very End LINK IN BIO Upon first diagnosis of a terminal illness, denial is common and natural. But when that denial never shifts, that's problematic. Death denial impedes access to a good death and is often traumatising for the family. The It’s Okay To Decay stickers have been restocked! They are currently available in the original black & white, the Autumn colorway seen here, and a limited edition silver metallic version. I create this design about 8 years ago, when I first became involved in green burial advocacy. Growing up, I was raised to believe I was not just outside of nature, but in dominion over it. Embracing the idea that I’m not just a part of nature, but destined to be consumed by it, was a pretty radical idea. As a mortal being, I now find a lot of comfort and meaning in understanding my body’s relationship with nature. As a disabled and chronically ill being, I now find a sort of centering in accepting my—not just inevitable but—active decay. And I think it’s good to remember that something doesn’t have to feel comfortable to be acceptable. You don’t have to feel excited by it, but it can be okay. #shopkalma #kalma #deathpositive #deathpositivity #orderofthegooddeath #itsokaytodecay #disabledartist #greenburial #ecoburial #ecogoth #pnwgoth #naturalburial #porttownsend #porttownsendwa

Elegantly wreathed in wood and gilt, this woman gazes out from her frame, confident that her name survives: it's written on the back! Alta Watkins. A huge majority of antique photos I've seen are unidentified, so each name is a treasure. The glass is intact, and the frame has only a slight wobble in the right side that can easily be fixed. The wood of the frame is in wonderful condition! Based on Alta's clothes and Gibson girl-esque hair, it's likely that this cabinet photo was taken around or after the 1890s. As an actress, singer, writer, and illustrator and “Death Positivity,” extrordonaire Iris Perry has always desired to share stories that inspire reflection. Growing up in Oklahoma, Iris found respite in the seats of the theatre. Which lead her to telling stories on stage and in front of the camera. She finds storytelling to be such an extraordinary tool for change, she decided to abandon her previous plans to be a mortician and go to acting school in LA instead. Iris is continually amazed at the timeless power art has to unite audiences with a shared experience and is eternally grateful to be a part of that magic. . . . #actorsofinstagram #SingerSongwriter #WritersCommunity #IllustrationArtists #TheatreLife #FilmActress #Storytellers #InspireChange #ArtUnites #hollywooddreams #hollywoodfringe #deathpositivity

They intend to offer death doula and bereavement services in the future. I can’t express how glad and grateful I am to have Jen’s partnership and leadership for The Parlor. KALMA has been such an effort of-me for so long that it can be intimidating to release parts of it into the care of others. I have such confidence in Jen’s ability to not only lead our community work through The Parlor, but to do it better than I could. Please warmly welcome Jen to the KALMA team. 🖤 #shopkalma #kalma #entertheparlor #theparlorpt #deathpositive #deathpositivity #deathpositivemovement #orderofthegooddeath #porttownsend #porttownsendwa #pnw #olypen #seattle

Every wonder about joining the funeral industry, or how to navigate deathcare for yourself or a loved one? Bring your curiosity, and join us for a comfy and casual Q&A Session in The Parlor with funeral director, Clark Chu. Learn more and purchase $5-15 sliding scale tickets through the link in our bio—all proceeds go to the presenter, and no one is turned away for lack of funds. ABOUT CLARK: Clark Chu, formerly of Gig Harbor, Washington and now living and working in Portland, Oregon, is a funeral industry professional with 5 years of experience as a removal technician, crematory operator, and funeral director. He began his career at a small family-owned funeral home, then spent some time working for a large funeral corporation before returning to the small business side of the industry to better serve the families he works with and his community as a whole. Reflecting on his time in the funeral industry, Clark says: “While I’m still at the beginning of my career, my experiences with my client families as well as in everyday life have shown me just how important it is for people to have spaces to ask questions about death. I also aspire to better serve the unique needs of marginalized communities, who are often affected by death in unique ways. I hope that by providing just one such space, I can help empower people to make informed decisions for themselves and their loved ones, and hopefully ease some of the fear that often accompanies this weighty subject.” #entertheparlor #theparlorpt #deathpositive #deathpositivity #deathpositivemovement #orderofthegooddeath #askafuneraldirector #funeralindustry #funeraldirector #porttownsend #porttownsendwa #olypen #pnw #seattle

Meet the humans of The Parlor: AJ Hawkins is the Creative Director of KALMA and The Parlor, as well as a death positive artist and advocate. Her work is inspired by the relationship between ourselves, our bodies, and the natural world. Whether representing the necrobiome, illness, disability or grief, their art work often centers themes of decay. In 2019, AJ launched @shop_kalma —a death positive retail business specializing in handmade and secondhand goods. KALMA’s “It’s Okay To Decay” design has been called “the defining image of the green burial movement.” Currently, KALMA’s customer base spans 5 continents, in over 25 countries, and its online community is over 50k strong. AJ uses their online platform for advocacy work, creating content about death positive topics like green burial, death planning, and the bone trade. They are very interested in how we cultivate the skills of caretaking, and build better support systems within our communities. The Parlor is the newest place-based extension of this work, through which AJ hopes to connect the global death positive movement with their local community’s needs. #entertheparlor #theparlorpt #deathpositive #deathpositivity #deathpositivemovement #itsokaytodecay #orderofthegooddeath #porttownsend #porttownsendwa #olypen #pnw #seattle

💀 Spotted 💀 This lovely marble-covered coffin displaying lilly-of-the-valley flowers. This mausoleum is the final home of a man and his Daughter, being this her place to rest. This construction deserves a post of its own. Lilly-of-the-valley is Often used to represent young, beautiful and delicately beautiful women that have prematurely passed away. I still think last century's cemetery art has some of the most beautiful grief expressions, ever to be displayed. 🔖 . . . #cryptic_aesthetic_ #cemeterybeauty #cemeterywandering #cemetery_shots #cemitério #cemetery_photography #cemeteriesandgraveyards #cemeteriesofinstagram #cemetery_lovers #gothgoth #gothic #greendeath #graveyard_freaks #victorian #griefsupport #griefwork #griefexperience #griefexpression #deathpositivity

I finally had the chance to listen to a couple of podcast episodes, featuring interviews I did with Dan Miller from the @straightwhitejc podcast. One of the things we talked about was how it always troubles me when I see people on the left use the term “death cult” to describe, especially, pro-life Christianity. This is something I thought about addressing in my book, but didn’t. So I took the opportunity to think about it a bit more on my Substack this week. You can link to the essay via my bio, look for my Substack, Galactic Underworlds. You will also find a link to the podcast episodes there, if you’d like to listen. They’re both short (about 20 minutes each!) #deathpositive #deathpositivity #deathpositivemovement
