📚 Recent Reads: Sequel Edition 📚 As a kid, I devoured series. As an adult, I don’t gravitate towards them as often. I guess it’s the time commitment or the fact that I will read the first book and then forget a lot of it by the time I try to continue. Regardless, I made it a mini-goal for the summer to read (and actually finish) the various series I have on my shelves. So far, it’s going well! I’ve read the two Monk and Robot books that have been released and the first two books in SGJ’s Indian Lake trilogy. I can’t say much about either of these second installments because spoilers, duh, but here are some quick thoughts: ▫️A Prayer for the Crown-Shy by Becky Chambers - the cozy vibes continue as we follow the journeying of Dex and Mosscap. I enjoyed this one, but not as much as the first. Looking forward to more books in this series, whenever the come. 3.5/5⭐️ ▪️Don’t Fear the Reaper by Stephen Graham Jones - the slashing continues in Proofrock as another killer is on the loose. We continue to follow Jade and an ever expanding cast of characters. The slasher movie references are in abundance, which I love! While sometimes I was a bit lost with regard to what was actually happening, I enjoyed this one a bit more than the first! Trilogy Review The Indian Lake series My ratings- 🤍 My Heart Is A Chainsaw- 4.5⭐ ♥️ Don't Fear The Reaper- 4⭐ 🖤 The Angel Of Indian Lake- 3.5⭐ I finally got to read The Angel of Indian Lake, one of my most anticipated releases for this year, and so it only feels right for me to review the trilogy. Jade Daniels has my whole entire heart. She is such a great heroine and I really adore the journey that SGJ takes her on. These books and their characters live in my head rent free, and there is a 1000% chance I'll be doing a reread of this series in the near future. I love how self aware these books are, and the slasher movie trivia is a lot of fun. Jade's sporadic inner monologue pairs really well with the fast paced action and onslaught of gore that this trilogy brings. And on top of that, all three of these books have stellar narration in their audiobooks. Now I will say that each book in the series is about one step down from the one before it. There are a lot of characters in this world, and I had a hard time keeping them straight in the second two books, especially given that I had taken a brake between books. I also felt like the plot for the third book was a little lost on me, there was A LOT happening and I feel like I lost a lot because of it. However all three books have fantastic gore, lots of fun moments, great emotional beats, and some of the most gruesome descriptions I've ever read (the elk scene from the first book 👀). If you're wanting to check these books out, I can't recommend them enough. I would encourage you to read them back to back though, so that you don't have the same issues I had. Q. I have no idea why it took me so long to read the follow up to My Heart is a Chainsaw considering how much I adore it. 🫀If you haven’t read My Heart is a Chainsaw, please put down your phone and pick up this book. It was amazing and the perfect summer slasher for anyone who loves the campy horror movies. You’ll be obsessed and it will send you down a rabbit hole of movies and books. So don’t read this review because it may contain some information you don’t want to read. 🫀 But for this one- Jade has transformed into Jennifer and is desperately trying to leave behind everything else that happened in Proofrock. But the dead don’t stay dead! 🫀 There’s a bunch of reappearances of old characters that come into play and honestly, these are the best. There’s suspense, there’s thrill, there’s horror. And the whole time you’re getting an awesome story with lore and character developments and everything else you could ever ask for. 5/5- these are the best books. The Reaping Ridge Mark came out to Montana as part of a 4 State turkey tour as he works towards his 49 State Super Slam, and with limited time in each state, he brought every tool that a turkey hunter has at their disposal. The idea of fanning, or reaping, a turkey is a contentious subject depending on what turkey hunting circle you are part of, but after this morning I was a believer. This was one of two mature gobblers that were following two hens down the ridge. We had no hope of pulling them away with calls, so Mark pulled out the reaping decoy, crouched behind it, and got into a high spot. The rest of this hunt is what turkey hunting dreams are made of. Once this bird locked onto the decoy, it was only a matter of minutes until he walked directly up a cattle trail to 10 yards. 📚 Book Review 📚 - The Angel of Indian Lake - Book Rating: 4.5 ⭐️ Wow this final tale was packed with so much trauma. Poor Jade Daniels. She went through hell and back. I found this to be so gripping, shocking, dark, and scary. A perfect ending to the perfect trilogy! A magnificent tribute to horror and final girls. Proofrock, Idaho legacy is that of Haddonfield or Woodsboro. Jade Daniels is a true horror icon. Like the first two books, SGJ writing was superb! The way he seamlessly weaves in more substantial and thought provoking themes while keeping the reader unnerved and on the edge of their seat makes him truly unrivaled. Such a brilliant writer and one of the best modern classic horror author. Although, in my opinion this was the weakest of the three books. It was totally worth the read from the ending alone. SGJ’s trilogy started off as a love letter to horror. It ended up embodying the genre perfectly! I’ll never stop recommending this great series. Likes: The conclusion, unnerving, it kept me on the edge of my seat, a great final chapter for Jade Daniels, A slasher masterpiece!
