Though no longer standing today😓, the Schoolfield YMCA and Recreation Center was once a major landmark of Dan River’s welfare programs and a beloved community hub. Designed by J. Bryant Heard and built in 1916, the building functioned as a recreational center and was briefly home to Dan River’s experiment in Industrial Democracy, a company-run democratic vehicle for employees to voice policy change within the company from 1919 until 1930. The YMCA was built in the Classical Revival Style and featured amenities such as a large pool in the basement, a movie theater and a bowling alley, in addition to club rooms and more. When completed, the YMCA building was celebrated by Dan River management, who paid for its construction, as “the most beautiful and best equipped industrial Young Men’s Christian Association of the South.” This building continued to serve the community as the beloved Schoolfield Rec until Dan River closed in 2006 and the fate of the YMCA fell to hands that cared little for its historicity and more for its prime position at the corner of Park Avenue and West Main Street. To the dismay of all who loved the Schoolfield Rec Center and fought to save it, the building was demolished between 2006 and 2007 for a CVS.
