At Life Rites we have actively pioneered and supported people’s right to die at home. And, for those who wish to stay at home after they have died. In 2010, we imported cool plates from The Netherlands. The cool plate slows down the natural changes that occur with our dead and makes the living feel safe in that often unfamiliar time after death. In NSW, when a person dies an expected death at home, the regulations allow for your person to stay at home for up to five days. Most families have the home vigil for up to 24 hours or so. Long enough to stop, reflect, for some to come and say their goodbyes and be in that precious space together. This gift of time, of breathing out and of not rushing into the ‘next steps’ is so valuable. Embedded in our holistic model of care is supporting people to drop into the reality of what has occurred and setting their terms for what they choose and how they care for their dead. Many families who have felt that the cool plate and home vigil may not be for them, are so grateful to have it when the time comes. The cool plates are also available for people who, once coffined, come back home the night before their funeral for a vigil.
