Whilst recycling is an improvement on this model and gives materials a second life, the circular economy is a transformative model. By incorporating principals of redesign, reuse, refill, repair (and of course reduce!) materials circulate almost indefinitely, dramatically reducing or even eliminating waste. This idea of a closed loop isn’t new – after all it is how many societies once functioned (and some still do) and mimics nature. Fortunately, the circular economy is gaining momentum as we seek innovative solutions to reduce our ecological footprint and create a more sustainable future. Making your own reusable fabric wraps is a great way to create sustainable alternatives to plastic food wrap. This simple activity can be done (carefully) with friends or colleagues and they also make great gifts! 🌱👩👧👦 Here’s a step-by-step guide for a method we like and please keep safety in mind at all times: 𝐈𝐫𝐨𝐧𝐢𝐧𝐠 𝐦𝐞𝐭𝐡𝐨𝐝 (𝐮𝐬𝐞𝐬 𝐠𝐫𝐚𝐭𝐞𝐝 𝐛𝐞𝐞𝐬𝐰𝐚𝐱): 1. Lay down old towels or sheets of newspaper on work surface to catch any wax spills and ensure good ventilation2. Place cotton square flat on a sheet of baking paper 3. Sprinkle ½ cup of grated beeswax evenly on fabric (leaving a finger width of space around the edges) 4. Cover with a second sheet of baking paper 5. Use iron on low heat to melt and spread the wax across the cotton square. If there are gaps, sprinkle on a little more wax and melt with the iron 6 Avoid high heat (beeswax melts at a relatively low temperature) and avoid overheating the iron 7. Last Thursday we had a super special cleanup day as part of a series of sessions on plastic pollution from theory in the classroom to cleaning up outside and a waste survey that they are going to do this week! 40 students came and also some parents who really wanted to join an beach cleanup, and together we collected 75 kg from the Yarkon estuary in Tel Aviv! 🌱 Exciting News from Mymensingh! 🌱 On May 16, 2024, the Department of Environment (DoE) in Mymensingh held a full-day orientation workshop to promote the creation of plastic-free campuses. This initiative, in collaboration with the Environment and Social Development Organization (ESDO), is a key part of the Ministry of Environment, Forest and Climate Change (MoEFCC)'s 100-day action plan. The project, launched by ESDO in 2022, aims to transform campuses across Bangladesh into plastic-free zones. Vidyamoyee Govt. Girls' High School and Mymensingh Zilla School have been chosen to lead this effort, with a goal to declare them plastic-free by June. The workshop aimed to raise awareness about the harmful impacts of plastic and encourage sustainable alternatives. Participants engaged in group discussions, and poster presentations, and shared valuable insights on reducing plastic usage and pollution. Key figures at the event included Dilruba Ahmed, Deputy Secretary and Director of DoE, Mymensingh Division, and Mahfuzul Alam Masum, Additional District Commissioner, Education and ICT of Mymensingh, among other notable guests and school representatives. ESDO has already executed Plastic-free Campus activities in 10 schools across Dhaka, Rangpur, Sylhet, Khulna, and Rajshahi. From storytelling to brainstorming solutions, every voice counts in this global effort. Plastic waste is wreaking havoc on our planet, from polluting our oceans to harming wildlife. The problem is staggering: every year, millions of tons of plastic waste are generated, and much of it ends up in landfills or our natural environments. But there's hope! Solutions abound, from reducing single-use plastics to promoting recycling and investing in sustainable alternatives. Community initiatives, policy changes, and individual actions all play a vital role in combatting this crisis. Did you know? Delhi NCR in India generates a staggering amount of plastic waste, estimated to be over 4 lakh tons per year. This highlights the urgent need for concerted efforts to address the issue at both local and global levels. We keep making progress amidst the challenges, with our final goal being to have three plastic shredders completed, tested, and painted by Saturday, May 18th.
