In this video, I’m FINALLY sharing the results of my PFAS testing both for my tap water and my filtered water. PFAS chemicals are not included in the City Water tests from Tap Score so those need to be run separately. If you missed my first three videos on how I tested, and my general tap water and filtered water test results, check back in my feed. I like to test at the end of my filters’ lifespan. Many companies test their filters when they’re brand new, which is not a good indication of how well they perform over time so I like to test at the end to see how effective they still are. In my tap water, I have lead, arsenic, fluoride and six different types of PFAS :(. When we moved here in 2006, I was not thinking about water quality at all and honestly I wouldn't have known about the PFAS contamination since it wasn’t identified until 2016. But now it’s estimated that 45% of the nations’s tap water is contaminated with one or more PFAS chemicals and many utilities are just now testing for PFAS for the first time. I’m grateful that at least I’ve known about it for 8 years and have had an opportunity to have filtered water (although not all of my filters in the past have been ideal for my water). As a result of my water quality and some expensive buying mistakes, I’ve learned a TON over the years about water filtration. I’ve even taken courses on it so if you have any questions and are feeling overwhelmed or aren't sure where to start, reach out. I’d love to work together. Dr Masoumeh Zargar, @edithcowanuniversity's engineering lecturer has developed high-tech membrane filters to remove dangerous microplastics from aquatic and wastewater treatment systems. This new technology is set to change how water is treated worldwide. Dr Zargar, also an Australian Research Council DECRA Fellow, said the new membrane filtering technique can potentially change how water is treated worldwide, starting here in Australia. "We change the membrane structure, composition and surface properties and create more resilient environmentally friendly materials that won’t be clogged or damaged by microplastics and can remove them efficiently," Dr Zargar explained. In the quest to understand how micro-plastics are shed from petroleum based fabric, I discovered many environmental impacts of fabric production in general. While Davidson Environmental doesn't handle textiles, our focus is on collecting organic biodegradable matter which makes all biodegradables intriguing to us. Here's a breakdown of textile's environmental impact, ranked from most to least friendly. Linen/Hemp: • Made from the flax plant, needs minimal energy and water, low carbon footprint. • Minimizes waste, fully biodegradable. Silk: • Contributes to deforestation through Mulberry tree cultivation. • Water-intensive processes. • Chemical disposal pollutes water, affecting aquatic life and agriculture. Cotton: • Highest water usage amongst agricultural commodities. • Heavy pesticide use impacts workers and nearby populations. • Soil quality degradation. Wool: • Sheep provide fertilizer, improving soil health. • Significant carbon emission impact. • Highly recyclable and biodegradable. Viscose, Rayon, Lyocell, TENCEL™, and Modal: • Made from wood, bamboo, or seaweed pulp/cellulose. • Chemical processing poses health and environmental risks. • Biodegradable but dry clean only. Spandex: • Made from petroleum, shed microplastics, contributes to water pollution. • Environmental risks during manufacturing and disposal. Polyester: • Derived from fossil fuels, non-biodegradable. • Shed Microplastics • Significant energy and water usage during manufacturing. Nylon: • Petrochemical-based & microplastic pollutant. • Energy-intensive production, not biodegradable. These rankings consider resource usage, pollution, biodegradability, durability, recyclability, and end-of-life disposal. By choosing fabrics wisely and selecting quality clothing instead of fast fashion, we can make a big difference in the preservation and restoration of our environment. Plastic water bottles are a scourge. Americans purchase about 50 billion water bottles per year. Around 85% of these bottles end up as waste, taking up to 1000 years to completely degrade in the environment. Researchers from NIH found that 1 liter of water bottled in plastic contains around 240,000 plastic particles called microplastics, which have been found everywhere from the atmosphere to human blood. While the environmental impact of plastic bottles has been measured, the greater impact of microplastics has not. This is always a conversation starter at the till.... How is this possible?? Plastic is EVERYWHERE. SO much of our food is wrapped in it, choosing loose produce wherever possible is always going to help. A large part of it is also that millions of microplastic particles are released when it's heated - knowing this, we no longer heat anything in plastic in the microwave, instead transferring it to a plate or bowl beforehand 👌 I also had my mind blown when we needed a new kettle, when it arrived it was plastic inside 🤯 I hadn't realised this was a thing?! That water is going to be used in your tea, coffee, pasta, potatoes etc 🤮. Needless to say the kettle was returned and I went in store to choose a different one. Another possibility for those of us with young children - those plastic plates we've been cutting their food up on that have scratch marks all over 😬🫣 it might be time to recycle those and either replace them with an alternative or if they're old enough move them onto proper plates. We've now got a mix of bamboo plates, stainless steel and a few bits of 2nd hand crockery so it doesn't matter if it breaks. Plastic has been found in human blood, breast milk, placentas, lungs & poo.... Studies have shown that microplastics and the chemicals they release in the human body can alter hormone activity, lead to weight gain, insulin resistance, decreased reproductive health and cancers.
