I’m back! Sorry for the brief pause…but today I wanted to provide sustainable solutions to plastic water bottles! As we all know, plastic is very harmful to our planet and is starting to take over our natural surroundings. In 2021, around 600 billion plastic bottles and containers were manufactured resulting in around 25 million tons of plastic waste (CNN). However, this post compiles sustainable alternatives: 1. Obviously, the tried and true, most sustainable alternative: the reusable water bottle!!! 2. Boxed Water: this company is certified carbon neutral, the box is made out of 92% plant-based materials, and overall results in a 36% reduction in your carbon footprint (boxedwaterisbetter.com). 3. Just Water: the carton bottles are made out of 88% plant-based materials, plant materials are renewable, and the company is a certified B-Corp! (justwater.com) 4. Poland Spring: if a plastic water bottle is unavoidable choose Poland Spring! Early in my green journey, I accidentally bought organic bed sheets and towels only to realize organic was the color name, not the organic verification. Now I try to look for GOTS certified organic cotton. (This is the equal to USDA organic grown food in terms of environmental impact.) Labeling laws are not the same with food as they are with fabrics. You’ll also want to look for towels that are 100% your desired fabric and don’t have mixes of fossil fuel based materials like: ⚪Polyester ⚪Rayon aka visocse ⚪Spandex aka elastane or lycra ⚪Acrylic ⚪Nylon ⚪Fleece ⚪Velvet ⚪etc It’s even better when you can get fabrics organic, because it reduces the amount of pesticides I go into the environment to make them. With fabrics, I will buy some products that meet Oeko Tex guidelines but sometimes I find they have unnecessary plastic. But the petroleum derived products in Oeko Tex certified products are lesser toxic forms thankfully. O dia 17 de maio é o dia mundial da reciclagem. A data foi criada pela Organização das Nações Unidas para a Educação, Ciência e Cultura (@unesco) para servir de alerta sobre a importância da reciclagem dos resíduos. O Brasil é o quarto maior gerador de resíduos do Mundo, gera mais de 82 milhões de toneladas por ano e recicla apenas 4% de resíduos. A maioria desses resíduos vão parar em lixões a céu aberto, aterros sanitários e no mar. Além destes resíduos contaminarem o solo e o mar, eles também causam a morte de muitos animais, principalmente marinhos. A destinação incorreta dos resíduos deixam de gerar renda para muitos catadores que transformam resíduos em fonte de renda. Infelizmente ainda faltam investimentos do setor público e privado neste setor. Precisamos de mais políticas públicas e privadas em gestão de resíduos, para avançarmos neste tema tão importante e negligenciado. A reciclagem faz com que muitos materiais sejam reutilizados e reintegrados no ciclo produtivo, contribuindo para uma sociedade mais sustentável. Nesta data, aproveite para reduzir e repensar o que você consome. Evite o uso de plásticos de uso único, opte por embalagens recicláveis, reutilize os materiais e, por último, faça a destinação correta dos resíduos. ♻️ ♻️ Neste ano, trabalhando no projeto Vidrado, com a @alimentesolos, conseguimos 33 toneladas de vidro que foram destinados para reciclagem. Por coincidência, hoje eu começo a pesar as garrafas pet do projeto de coleta e redução do volume de lixo que comecei em julho do ano passado. Acredito que tenha pelo menos umas 3 toneladas de plástico aqui em casa. Não estou mais coletando porque não tenho mais onde colocar. Não dá nem pra andar mais aqui no quintal. É angustiante ver tanto plástico.
