Growth is hard. Growing pains are tough. The messy middle is just that, messy. And leadership, the toughest of them all. As a leader you have to put everyone around you as more important than you. As Simon Sinek says ‘Leaders Eat Last’. And it’s so true. People think that leadership is something you’re born with and maybe some people are but I think it’s learned, it’s a skill like any other. And you have to train that skill and practice. Putting other people’s priorities ahead of your own is not easy when you have a to do list as long as a toilet roll. But it’s necessary, because yes things may be slower, yes you might get stressed about not getting through everything but helping someone else be 1% better and learning, pushes everything forward more quickly, even if it doesn’t feel it at the time. Learning to prioritise is key, regularly reassessing what you should be working on and ‘doing, delegating or ditching’ your tasks is essential. Focus is vital, making sure you’re giving the most important things, the most important things. Time and energy. And ensuring you look after yourself as well, the energy comes from you and you cannot fill someone’s cup from an empty cup. These are things I have and am learning as we transition the business and grow. It’s not easy. It’s as hard a job as being a parent and in some cases very similar, we have to show them the way, not do it for them. But as tough as it is, when you know you’re doing rewarding work and that just over the other side of the hill is where the next stage of the business lies, for clients, for the team and for you, it makes you fill your coffee cup and keep going.
