BEWARE OF MICROPLASTICS! Many studies over the last few years shown that microplastics were found in blood, stool, lung tissue, placenta, and even breast milk. It is known fact that presence of microplastics is directly linked to an increased risk of heart attack, stroke, or death. Recent research has found the connection between exposure to microplastics and oxidative stress, DNA damage, organ dysfunction, metabolic disorder, immune response, neurotoxicity, as well as reproductive and developmental toxicity. Unfortunately, we are still to discover the impact of microplastics on our health due to global production involving microplastics and nanoplastics - we will ingest and inhale more and more. But we can do some things to reduce our daily contact with plastic: * Avoid using disposable plastic bottles, plastic bags, cutlery, single-use coffee cups /lids (remember those starbucks cups!) * Shop on supermarket using reusable bags or biodegradable bags. * Instead of buying bottled water - use filtered tap water (make sure you use good filtering system!) - remember the gallons of water we commonly use in UAE remain under the harsh sun - making microplastics leach i to the water. * Whenever possible - use glass water bottles instead of plastic ones. * Minimize the foods packaged in plastic * don’t use at home or in your lunch box plastic Tupperware boxes- replace them with glass or stainless steel. For the same reason avoid plastic sandwich bags - change them to paper ones. * Avoid plastic cutting boards * Avoid cooking with plastic spatulas and spoons. * Avoid some tea bags - use instead loose tea or bags made of silk * Avoid using toothpaste paste with micro beads - that looks like tiny inclusions in the toothpaste. ‼️One more thing - PLASTICS are known hormone disruptors too - by avoiding them we can reduce the exposure of xenoestrogens that interfere with hormone metabolism.
