During Materials Trailer visits last week, representational work around the human figure and faces emerged amongst a group of second graders. The symbols were the result of an interaction between the fundamental characteristics of the material (shape, texture, flexibility, number, etc.) and a child’s understanding of the human form. These two sets of ideas modify each other in a dynamic process that ultimately determines the “look” of a symbol. The flowing quality of a piece of fabric inspired this child to use it for hair. For their “person,” another child utilized the rigid column of a cork as a neck onto which they attached a garment. Two other corks were carefully located under the garment as legs. In their next iteration, they rearranged the materials so that the flowy fabric represented hair, the cork as a body, while the untied bow was transformed into a mermaid’s tail. The Materials Trailer spent four days @saracademyriverdale last week. Children ages 3 to 7 played with open-ended materials they had selected, and one recurring representation across the age groups was a “bed.” The creation of this item, like most symbols in early childhood, was an interaction between the children’s understanding of a bed and the attributes of the materials being used. A bed may hold meaning as a place of rest, dreams, coziness, hiding, or healing. Soft fabrics, pieces of linoleum, wood, and tile inspired mattresses, fluffy “pillows” and “blankets.” The meaning of these symbols was further enhanced by actions the children performed with them, such as covering, uncovering, and snuggly wrapping, or the things placed nearby, like a “rug” or an “alarm clock” (Nespresso pod and blue applesauce top). On #EarthDay here’s a throwback to a painting from a while back. It’s not my wheelhouse or my strongest work, but it’s something I still feel strongly about. My original post’s words still say it best (pleased to report my son still watches Blue Planet 2 Episode 1 on the regular 😂): The Hindenburg Whale - oil on canvas - 30”x40” As he enjoys life on the spectrum, my son fixates on specific episodes of content that he enjoys. One of those episodes? Blue Planet 2, Episode 1 - “One Ocean.” Over and over and over. The ocean is magical, and my son is enraptured by it. And if we don’t do something, the oceans will be obliterated by the time he’s my age. At the current rate, the amount of plastic in the ocean is expected to double in the next 15 years, and by 2050 there will be more plastic in the sea than fish. There are plastic islands forming on the ocean surface, and one twice size of Texas already makes a home in the Pacific. Around 100,000 marine animals are found killed by ocean plastic ingestion or entanglement each year, and this is only the tip of the iceberg. There are countless more lying at the bottom of the ocean, who- once decomposed- will release the plastic for other sea creatures to encounter. .(I could go on and on, but you can go watch the documentary A Plastic Ocean @aplasticocean and then wash it down with Blue Planet 2 @blue.planet.2 and get as enraptured by the ocean’s glory as my son does again and again) This ongoing disaster is happening all around us, we just don’t have a famous image of the ocean going up in proverbial flames to look upon like we have had of the famously photographed Hindenburg Disaster.
