The Indian Meteorological Department (IMD) has issued a red alert for a severe heatwave expected to hit Delhi, Punjab, Haryana, and most parts of Western Rajasthan starting Sunday, May 19. According to the IMD, a heatwave is defined by significant deviations from normal temperatures. For the plains, a heatwave is declared when temperatures reach 40°C or more, and for hilly areas, it is 30°C or more. A heatwave is classified as severe if temperatures rise more than 6.4°C above normal. The IMD warns that these severe heat conditions pose a high risk of heat illnesses and heat strokes, particularly affecting vulnerable groups such as the elderly and infants. Residents are advised to take extreme care and avoid prolonged exposure to the sun. Two engineers from Madhya Pradesh, Ashwini Kosta from Jabalpur and Anish Awadhiya from Umaria, who were killed in a hit-and-run accident in Pune, were laid to rest on Tuesday. The bodies of the 25-year-old engineers arrived at their homes late Monday evening, leaving their families devastated. The accident occurred on May 18 at 2:15 AM. Ashwini and Anish were leaving a restaurant on their bike when a high-speed Porsche car ran them over near Kalyani Nagar. Both engineers died on the spot. The car was driven by a minor, the son of a Pune-based builder, who was reportedly intoxicated. The court (Juvenile Justice Board) granted the minor bail within 15 hours of the incident and instructed him to write an essay on road accidents. Meanwhile, on Tuesday morning, the police arrested the minor's father, builder Vishal Agarwal, in Sambhajinagar.
