The second yoga sutra of Patanjali is the most inportant of all. It captures the essence of the path of yoga 🧘 “Yogas chitta vritti nirodh” translates to “yoga is the neutralization of the vortices of feeling.” To achieve the state of yoga (union): merging the little self (ego) with the greater Self (spirit), we have to calm the energetic whirlpools of chitta (primordial feeling) in the heart. These agitated feelings of the heart include attachments, likes and dislikes, inclinations, desires, attractions and repulsion. They cause us suffering by making us cling to the past, fear for the future, create conditions for our happiness, and separate from others. Week 1 of the dream job: recap For the next few months, I’ve decided to take a big leap and investment in myself. Teaching yoga & meditation as well as making art has been what lights me up more than anything. I have been working in these fields for 4 and 6 years respectively, but always in addition to working another job (or 2), taking courses, doing a masters degree, etc. While yoga & art have been at the centre of my life in terms of importance, I’ve always had other things demanding the majority of my time (which have been nourishing in other ways). This past week has been the first week of 100% dedication to this work in both importance AND in time. I’ve spent my days: 🪷working on retreat and workshop planning 🪷teaching classes 🪷lengthening my daily sadhana/practice 🪷catching up on courses and trainings 🪷researching and preparing newsletter and blog options 🪷painting (lots). It’s requiring an immense amount of dedication and trust. While I’ve been doing this work for some time, it still feels so early. And I know it will take time to flourish. But I’m here, in my studio, at my desk, on my mat, laying the roots. It’s scary, exciting, but I’m just so happy to be here. Akṣaya Tṛtīyā अक्षय तृतीया // Today marks the most auspicious day in the Vedic calendar, where both the luminaries, sūrya (sun) and chandra (moon) are in their exalted positions. Occuring on the third (tr̥tīyā) lunar day of the spring month of Vaiśākha, Akṣaya, meaning “never diminishing,” illuminates this day as a beacon of enduring accomplishments. This auspicious occasion beckons new beginnings with unparalleled favorability, be it in the sacred bond of marriage, the initiation of ventures, the acquisition of gold or a new abode, or acts of benevolence. Such is its potency that the necessity of calculating an auspicious moment, known as muhūrta, becomes obsolete, for the entire day brims with divine blessings. Bhrumadhya (Third Eye) refers to a concept in Yoga know as "Bhrumadhya Drishti'. It is a sanskrit term used in yoga āsana practice and meditation, which means focusing one's internal gaze on the third eye center. This point is described as being located between eyebrows or just above that point. In sanskrit "Bhru" means "eyebrow", "madhya" means "center", and "dhristi" translates to "seeing", "gaze", or "eye". The practice of Bhrumadhya Drishti is said to aid in concentration, balance, and connecting whit one's intuitive powers. It is often employed in seated meditation and various Yoga poses to help block distractions and improve focus. The Yamas and Niyamas provide a framework for how we relate to ourselves and others. They can act as guidelines for creating harmony and balance in our lives. The intention being to ease some of the suffering caused by our very humanness. These aspects of the yoga approach to life have given me a helpful gauge and framework for accountability and responsibility in my life. How compatible is life in the world with being detached from it? 🤔 The earliest text to teach meditative yoga – the Kaṭha Upaniṣad – repeatedly calls for wise choices about where to focus. The basic idea is straightforward. The timeless presence of the innermost self offers lasting contentment. Everything else cannot, because it’s changing and eventually decays – like the physical body. Does this logic lead to world-renunciation, or at least to withdrawal as far as possible? Old texts often make it sound that way, yet one can also remain in the world and just be less attached to stuff. Would that stop short of the ultimate goal? Our answers to these sorts of questions will probably vary, and might not be the same as what texts say. So it’s helpful to talk about both, and acknowledge distinctions. 🙌 Join me on Sunday to do that! Today marks the auspicious occasion of Akshaya Tritiya (”third day of unending prosperity”), which is celebrated regionally as the most beneficial day for investments, charity and beginning of new projects. But it is also Matangi Jayanti: the appearance or victory of the ninth Mahavidya (great wisdom). The word ”mata” means a thought, or an opinion. Matangi is therefore often understood as the form of Shakti that embodies thought through the spoken word. She is also associated with the ears and our ability to listen and learn, as well as to hear the voice of intuition. Matangi is said to give knowledge, talent and expertise and is the goddess behind all external articulating of internal wisdom, including all art forms, dance, and music. In many ways, Matangi resembles goddess Saraswati, who is also associated with knowledge, creativity, art, aesthetic refinement, elegance and eloquence. They both hold the veena, the stringed instrument that not only represents musical expressiveness (showing a disciplined approach to technique/grammar resulting in spontaneity, flow and beauty) but also symbolizes the human body. Also, they are both associated with rain, thunder and water- currents leading to the sea. But Matangi is often described as dark emerald green or deep blue, unlike Saraswati who is likened to the cool light of the moon. In some depictions, Matangi also holds not only scrolls, rosary and veena, but a bloody sword and a skull. She is clearly a Mahavidya and as such always associated with Kali. The art and expression that comes through Matangi’s grace therefore tends to reflect a rawer, perhaps more authentic voice than Saraswati’s conventional perfectionism. She is a darker form; ecstatic, mystical and close to the wilderness. She is the knowledge that lies beyond accepted such; the knowledge that liberates and transforms. Embodiment is a big word that means something very simple. It’s when an idea becomes something you can see and touch. To embody something is to give it a form, a body. When we talk about an embodied practice, we’re talking about bringing physicality to our thoughts and feelings. Connecting the mind to the body. Or, connecting with the mind through the body. When I first started practicing yoga, I focused only on the physical aspect of it. I loved that I could leave my thoughts (and anxiety) behind and focus only on what was happening on my mat. My mind couldn’t focus on all the things the instructor was asking me to do AND worry about all the ways I felt like I was screwing up my life! As my practice deepened, I began to understand that what I experienced on my mat wasn’t just physical, though. I had to think about each movement. I had to feel it, work out the puzzle that is the body, and then follow through on the instruction. I am an overthinker. A problem-solver. A worrier. But when I’m on my mat, my mind has a place to focus. It connects with my body and keeps me there. Keeps me present. Keeps me connected to me. Will you join me on your mat this weekend? Yet, nestled within the heart of yoga philosophy lies a profound truth: the physical practice is merely one of eight limbs, each serving as a pathway to self-realization and spiritual enlightenment. -Yama (Ethical Standards) -Niyama (Self-Discipline) -Asana (Physical Postures) -Pranayama (Breath Control) -Pratyahara (Sense Withdrawal) -Dharana (Concentration) -Dhyana (Meditation) -Samadhi (Union with the Divine and Pure Bliss) My journey into the depths of yoga philosophy truly began when I embarked on my teacher training with spirituality, guidance, and community — was right under my nose all along. I had always felt like I didn't quite fit into existing groups, but through yogic philosophy, I found a roadmap that resonated with my own spiritual beliefs, morals and ethics, ultimately leading me on a path, with my guiding light clear in view - Samadhi. I used to think yoga was a magic eraser for my life's problems. Practice all you want... but reality is still waiting outside the studio. To-do lists and daily fires don't disappear in downward dog. It wasn't yoga's fault, or mine, but I craved a quick fix. What yoga actually gave me was self-awareness. I learned to notice how I tense up when anxious, and how my frustration often spilled onto others. This body - mind awareness, fostered by yoga, turned into mindfulness. Yoga didn't solve my problems, and let's be honest, a **perfect** chaturanga never did either (it might have even added some shoulder problems...). But yoga did equip me with the tools to work with, and helped me weather my problems. So, when people ask if yoga made me calm and happy, I say yes, but not just because of poses or meditation.
