Yesterday was The Yoga Sanctuary’s 17th birthday. 🎉🎂🥳 17 years. That means that next month I will have been teaching yoga for 18 years. 17. 18. It’s been a long, wild, and beautiful ride. Filled with so many shifts and changes. In many ways, I feel like I’ve grown up right inside this lovely building, with this lovely practice, and surrounded by this amazing community. If we look at it as a lifespan, TYS is not quite yet an adult and I’m only coming into adulthood as a teacher. There’s so much more to learn and so much more to share. You might not be able to tell, but this photo captures one of the most scary and challenging moments in my life. Hiking Angles Landing in Zion National Park. ⛰️😳 I did it. And in the midst of it, had what I can only believe was a panic attack. I would have turned around, I wouldn’t have done—it if not for my amazing and supportive husband (@gfrench90) telling me the whole way that I could do it, that I’d be so disappointed in myself if I didn’t. Essentially telling me that the fear was okay, but to keep moving forward. And I did. I did it. And it was amazing. And maybe I did concurred some fear that day, but I also learned is that it’s a little easier to do when you’ve got cheerleaders cheering you on. 🥰 While my love is, of course, my biggest cheerleader, I’m blessed to have many. Just came across these fun photos from a couple months ago… I went indoor bouldering for the first time with a young friend of mine. It was SO fun. I got to use my body in ways I don’t normally use it and challenge myself in ways I don’t normally challenge myself. I loved everything about the place. It was open and clean and there were all kinds of people there. Mostly young-ish. I was definitely the oldest and my little friend was definitely the youngest. Most were somewhere between us. All of them just hanging out, talking, bouldering, talking some more. It was lovely to see. The wild thing is though… when we walked in, the walls looked SOOO high! And taking one step up felt so scary. My little friend was the best, of course. She cheered me on the whole way. But, looking at these photos… well, it wasn’t really all that high, was it? 🤣 I’ve got some more thoughts about that… You know, how little things can seem so big and terribly scary, especially when you’re doing them for the first time. And how the possibility of falling down might keep us from ever even trying. I think I’ll go write about it for our upcoming newsletter! Want in? This past weekend I was honored to spend some time with an amazing group of women in our Art of Teaching: Strengthening Your Foundation intensive. We spent 6 hours exploring some of these questions: ✨ What is a yoga teacher? ✨ What is a yoga student? ✨What are our biggest concerns, fears, and challenges when it comes to teaching yoga? We dove into the various stages of yoga teaching, how we communicate with our students, and explored the ways we can layer philosophical themes into our classes. The work was deep and important. I didn’t take any photos. There was no time. And it was not the place. This weekend… We’ll be diving deep. ~~~ It’s one of my favorite things to do and one of my favorite workshop intensives to lead. ~~~ The Art of Teaching: Strengthening Your Foundation The first of a 4-part series, this day-long intensive will take your teaching skills to the next level in order to help you make a positive impact on your students' lives. We will: ~ Explore the dynamics of the teacher-student relationship. ~ Learn how to expand and strengthen communication skills. ~ Examine own habitual teaching tendencies and habits. ~ Develop techniques to simply and accessibly incorporate yoga philosophy into classes. ~ Learn to emphasize the principles of a well-balanced and mindful approach to teaching. This intensive is part of The Yoga Sanctuary’s Mentorship Program and taken on its own, is eligible for Continuing Education hours with the Yoga Alliance. We had some visitors today at The Yoga Sanctuary…. 🤗😍💚😍🤗 ~~~ Meet Cruiser and Jilly Bean. Jilly is a sweet and shy opossum and Cruiser is an American Kestrel. Both are full-time residents at Peace River Wildlife Center - PRWC. They joined us today for our special Yoga Month workshop, Embracing the Practice. Cruiser and Jilly, along with all the folks at PRWC and the work that they do, represent one of the forms of yoga we explored in our workshop today, Karma Yoga. Karma Yoga is the yoga of action, doing without expectation of anything on return. Practice. This is the literal definition or translation of abhyasa. The very heart of yoga practice is… practice, “steady effort in the direction you want to go.” It’s easy to fall off course. Most definitely. Sometimes all it takes is a gentle breeze to through us off course. And all of a sudden we’re moving in some other direction we never intended or wanted to go. Maybe we suddenly look around and wonder… how did I get here? ~~~ Don’t get me wrong. Sometimes a change in direction is needed or wanted or consciously chosen. All of that is fine and even good. Especially if we find pebbles, boulders, brick walls, or crevasses along our chosen path… It’s the mindfulness of making that change that is important — continuing the practice of moving forward with steady effort in the direction you want to go. Maybe the practice is the practice. The creating of the path. Allowing it to unfold in front of you… Maybe the path is made by walking. Some random thoughts on adventures and space and change and life… Sometimes adventures happen. Sometimes. Some of are lucky enough to step out of our daily lives for a moment. A day. A week. A month. But then what? What happens when the adventure ends? When we return to our day-to-day life? With the daily routines, stresses, and challenges? It might all look the same on the outside… But what about the inside? For me, the goal is to keep those little adventures alive inside and let them do their work. To approach everyday as the adventure it is. 𝘉𝘦𝘧𝘰𝘳𝘦 𝘦𝘯𝘭𝘪𝘨𝘩𝘵𝘦𝘯𝘮𝘦𝘯𝘵 𝘤𝘩𝘰𝘱 𝘸𝘰𝘰𝘥, 𝘤𝘢𝘳𝘳𝘺 𝘸𝘢𝘵𝘦𝘳. 𝘈𝘧𝘵𝘦𝘳 𝘦𝘯𝘭𝘪𝘨𝘩𝘵𝘦𝘯𝘮𝘦𝘯𝘵 𝘤𝘩𝘰𝘱 𝘸𝘰𝘰𝘥, 𝘤𝘢𝘳𝘳𝘺 𝘸𝘢𝘵𝘦𝘳. It may all look the same on the outside… but how does it feel on the inside? Before and after. There’s a whole lot of space between the two. And maybe it’s in that space that the magic happens. We’re in the midst of a month-long adventure that includes an 8-day walk by @hillwalktours through Scotland… my yoga practice has not been a typical one. Sure, I’ve stretched out, created shapes that look like yoga postures, and have taken many conscious breaths along the way. Sometime more focused and sometime less. But none of that matters. As TKV Desikachar says…The success in yoga lies NOT in our ability to perform postures. But in how the practice positively changes our life. And our relationships. May I introduce our 2023 Yoga Teacher Training Graduates… ~~~ It’s always bittersweet. The end of YTT (yoga teacher training). All the planning, all the time, all the work. And then it’s done. ~~~ Yes, for me. But for them too. I think now though is when the real work begins. The integrating, the assimilating, and the commitment to continuing. It’s easy when you are pushed, when you have someone to be accountable to, and when supporting others on the same path. But now it’s done. And now the only person that these graduates have to answer to is themselves. 💭 Reflexiones sobre el español y el yoga. 💭 I’ve been learning how to speak Spanish… on and off for about four years now. It is not easy. My on and off approach is not all that helpful either. I can read about it, use language apps, follow all kinds of learn-to-speak-spanish IG accounts, even take classes (which I am). But really, what I really need to do is talk to people. Practice. A lot. Speak. A lot. It reminds me of one of my favorite yoga sutras… Sutra 1.14: Practice becomes firmly grounded when well attended to for a long time, without break, and in all earnestness. All the books, all the YouTube videos, all the IG accounts… none of it matters if you don’t practice, if you don’t implement the practice into your life. It won’t stick. And change and growth won’t otherwise happen. We gotta do it. ~~~ The yoga sutras also tells us that every single reason we come up for not practicing falls under nine basic obstacles. Things like doubt, carelessness, failure to reach firm ground. And you know what? It’s those same things, those same very obstacles that get in the way of my Spanish practice. Or any practice for that matter. In other words, yoga philosophy and yoga teachings are so much more than how to move our bodies or how to make fancy shapes. Yoga is about recognizing and acknowledging our habits and tendencies. Learning about our true motivations, fears, and desires. Sitting with them, seeing them, and perhaps even embracing them. 🧐How is this going to help me learn Spanish? The TYS team gathered yesterday… ALL 14 of us were able to be in the same space at the same time. (You can’t see them all here, but they are!) We talked, we brainstormed, we sat in community. And we ate! ~~~ The two biggest things on our agenda: 💚 Ways to continue to support you in your practice. 💚 How to enhance your experience both when you’re with us in the studio and when you’re with us online. ~~~ It was productive, but more importantly, it felt amazing to just be together. Even a day later, I’m still feeling the gratitude for this team. Time, patience, commitment. ~~~ I love watching all the plants grow and flowers bloom in my yard… ~~~ I’ve shared before that for so many years I believed I was incapable of growing anything at all. I believed I had a black thumb… and dreaded if someone gave me anything more than cut flowers. ~~~ But it turns out my thumb is as green as anyone’s. (Well, maybe not as anyone’s, but certainly as green as your average gardening person’s.) ~~~ The thing is… it takes time, patience, and commitment. You have to do the stuff. Tend to it, water it, learn about it, experiment with it, be willing to make changes and get rid of what isn’t working. And sometimes, just sit still and watch. Observe. Learn. Stop forcing. Take back… to just a month ago… and our retreat in Costa Rica. 💚🙏🏻🧘🙏🏻💚 This space supported our morning meditations. Each day we’d gather at 6:30am to sit in silence and take in the sounds of the jungle. We could hear the birds and the sounds of life so close to us; we could hear the howler monkeys and crashing of waves in the distance. There was a calmness, a pureness, a spaciousness that is so often hard to find in the hustle and bustle of “regular” life. But we try… Having times like last month is a sweet blessing. I didn’t take any photos yesterday. It didn’t seem right to do so. An honoring of our topic… The Brain, PTSD, and a Trauma-Informed Approach to Teaching Yoga. We were led by the amazing Linda Lee of Linda Lee Mindfulness-based Counseling in Sarasota, Florida as part of our 2023 Yoga Teacher Training Program. ~~~ My biggest takeaways: we just can’t know what has happened or what is happening for someone at any given moment. All yoga should be trauma-informed, if not even trauma-assumed. In a class of 20 people, we can most likely at least 3 - 5 people have suffered a serious, life-altering traumatic experience(s). Be mindful.
