Embodiment is a big word that means something very simple. It’s when an idea becomes something you can see and touch. Embodiment is a big word that means something very simple. It’s when an idea becomes something you can see and touch. To embody something is to give it a form, a body.

When we talk about an embodied practice, we’re talking about bringing physicality to our thoughts and feelings. Connecting the mind to the body. Or, connecting with the mind through the body.

When I first started practicing yoga, I focused only on the physical aspect of it. I loved that I could leave my thoughts (and anxiety) behind and focus only on what was happening on my mat. My mind couldn’t focus on all the things the instructor was asking me to do AND worry about all the ways I felt like I was screwing up my life!

As my practice deepened, I began to understand that what I experienced on my mat wasn’t just physical, though. I had to think about each movement. I had to feel it, work out the puzzle that is the body, and then follow through on the instruction.

I am an overthinker. A problem-solver. A worrier. But when I’m on my mat, my mind has a place to focus. It connects with my body and keeps me there. Keeps me present. Keeps me connected to me.

Will you join me on your mat this weekend?
