How compatible is life in the world with being detached from it? 🤔

The earliest text to teach meditative yoga – the Kaṭha Upaniṣad – repeatedly calls for wise choices about where to focus.

The basic idea is straightforward. The timeless presence of the innermost self offers lasting contentment. Everything else cannot, because it’s changing and eventually decays – like the physical body.

Does this logic lead to world-renunciation, or at least to withdrawal as far as possible?

Old texts often make it sound that way, yet one can also remain in the world and just be less attached to stuff. Would that stop short of the ultimate goal?

Our answers to these sorts of questions will probably vary, and might not be the same as what texts say. So it’s helpful to talk about both, and acknowledge distinctions.

🙌 Join me on Sunday to do that! We’ll be talking about yoga in the early Upaniṣads.

📺 There’s still plenty of time to catch up with recordings of the rest of the course.
