LA CONQUISTA DEL OESTE (1963) DE JOHN FORD con John Wayne, Harry Morgan, George Peppard y Russ Tamblyn Probablemente si tuviera que escoger mis 20 ó 30 westerns favoritos de toda la historia del cine jamás estaría en esa lista “La conquista del oeste”. Pues bien, hará unas semanas volví a ver la espléndida copia restaurada en altísima definición y me quedé petrificado ante semejante peliculón que visualmente es de una apabullante espectacularidad y soberbia realización con escenas tan espectaculares como la estampada de los búfalos. Todo un espectáculo cinematográfico de primer orden. Cierto que la película al ser dirigida por varios directores y abarcar tantísimas cosas es una obra desequilibrada e incluso fallida en algunos aspectos pero solo por ver el recital de incontables estrellas que aparecen y homenajean al género del western ya merece la pena. Cierto también que quizás abusa de todos los clichés de las películas de este género pero a mí no me importa pues cuanto más mayor me hago más me gustan esos clichés tan manidos (empezando por la esplendorosa y magistral música de Alfred Newman). Escojo esta escena (la única dirigida por el Maestro John Ford) porque me acuerdo perfectamente que la primera vez que la vi no me gustó porque rompía bruscamente el ritmo de la película y el tono de toda la narración. Era como una anomalía que nada tenía que ver con el resto de la película. Pues bien, vuelta a ver me parece un momento grandioso, soberbiamente dirigido y que es cine en estado puro. Join detectives Sergeant Joe Friday and Officer Bill Gannon as they fight crime on a 3-3/4" scale and have adventures far more fantastical than anything seen on the TV series! For those unfamiliar, Dragnet was originally a 1940s radio series, then a TV series (and movie) that ran from 1951-1959, followed by the inspiration for this project, a TV series (and movie) that ran from 1967-1970. The first true police procedural series, Dragnet was created by and starred Jack Webb as Joe Friday. Friday and his various partners (Bill Gannon in the 1967 series, played by Harry Morgan) are LAPD detectives who solve cases based on anonymized, real-life police files. If you've ever heard the phrase, "Just the facts, ma'am," that's a reference to Friday (although he never actually said that exact phrase). The series is on Amazon Prime in the US if you're interested! I was inspired to create this after rewatching the series, which I watched frequently as a kid on "Nick at Nite" in the early 90s. While this is obviously something very niche and won't replace my usual content, I think it will be a lot of fun, and I hope you'll enjoy it. ⭐️⭐️⭐️⭐️⭐️ Having just finished the series a few days ago, I dove into this book and it was really great. There are plenty of great interviews with all the main characters. It was released in 1988, and so none of the actors/show runners had passed on. Interspersed with commentary, is a synopsis of every episode, which some people may dislike because now you could just google it. But, this was written before the internet. Personally, I really enjoyed it because a lot of the early seasons were a bit of a blur, as I took about a year getting through the whole show, so it was nice how many episodes I read the description and immediately had a visual memory of it. I’m grateful I received this book for Christmas, it came in great timing and I actually was only at about Season 7 when I got on my break from work almost a month ago, so it was nice to read and relive those episodes even more, it has been a lot of fun to watch them while I’ve been away from work. Soon, I’ll be planning on getting a copy of the initial M*A*S*H novel, and then seeing the movie. I read that Gary Burghoff, who played Radar O’ Reilly, was in the movie as well, and was the only actor brought over from the film. Lastly, after I finished the final episode I watched a documentary which just aired for the 50th anniversary, called M*A*S*H: The Comedy That changed Television. It was really lovely and I highly recommend it
