May 7 - Tourist Trap, 1979. I went into this with low expectations, but gradually found myself being drawn in. Mannequins are creepy, so that’s a plus right from the start. Chuck Connors is a decent actor, so that’s another plus. And the score is wonderful, which really adds to the atmosphere throughout. So much better than it should have been. Won this photo premium of the 1948-49 Almendares in the last @lotg_auctions. The Scorpions won the Cuban League by an 8 game margin and swept the inaugural Caribbean Series. Soon to be major leaguers Monte Irvin and Sam Jethroe performed incredibly well. Other players of note on the team are Santos Amaro, Al Gionfriddo of the Doyers, and a kid named Chuck Connors. What you hold in your hands is a special & unique recording. Like Chaplin’s film outtakes, these early experiments of Duke’s were likely never meant to see the light of day. But lucky we are they survived. Ellingtonia expert, eye witness, & Norman’s go-to liner-writer for most things Duke, Stanley Dance, describes the scene of at least one such, “get it up on its feet” session. Duke would be up the previous night sketching out ideas for new tunes, & then call a last minute session for the next day to hear it come to life. A laid back environ with close friends & family transpired, as the band took a bite out of the new offerings for the first time. Surely the pieces would continue to evolve with more play & refinements, but what we’re able to hear here are works in progress. And sometimes more can be gleaned from the process than the finished product. It’s always a treat when Norman writes the liners, with his frank & cool manner of turning a phrase. But we get the rare treat of two liners, the other by Mr.Stanley Dance, a writer on Ellingtonia, who penned em on the last post’s record. Even as late in their careers as they were, (& they weren’t youngins), Duke’s longstanding big band is a beautiful force, equally dealing power, syncopation, virtuosity, & lush sensitivity. This is a gorgeous two sides of classic, & newer pieces, which the ever writing Duke always sprinkled in. Mr. Ellington & his band had been on a worldwide tour, acting as Jazz ambassadors through far reaching places such as India, the Middle East, & the far East (where Jazz was less commonly known & enjoyed). And of course, they fully covered & criss-crossed all of Jazz-loving Europe. Duke, feeling especially appreciated by Swedish audiences, may have performed his pinnacle show of the tour in Stockholm, where this night of music was recorded. This album has a beautiful range of moods, feelings, & energies. The laidback, restrained pace of numbers in the first half are a masterclass. And the eponymous 14min masterpiece is a tour de force, showcasing perhaps best of all, the great American genius’ range. Norman Granz had wanted to record the heck outta Duke for a long time, but their personalities didn’t seem to jive till late in Ellington’s career. Thankfully we do have 12 recordings on Pablo, and pretty special ones at that. Chuck Connors and His Many Careers: Born on April 10th, 1921, it seemed Chuck Connors was always destined to be a household name, even though his given name was originally Kevin Connors. He was never a fan of this name, so he tried to find a new one for himself. He went by Stretch and Lefty, most likely based on his height and being left-handed. But then, the name that stuck came from being a first baseman, as he would always say, "Chuck it to me, baby. Chuck it to me." After graduating from high school, Chuck received more than 25 scholarship offers! Being about 6 and a half feet tall, he not only played baseball. He also joined the basketball team at his college. As a matter of fact, he is one of only 13 people to ever be in both the MLB and the NBA. He is the only person to star in his own TV show afterward. Though he played professional sports, including becoming a player on his dream team, the Dodgers, and served in the military, during WWII, he decided to give acting a chance. He started out by playing the tough guys: military men, police officers, and some outlaws. But then, he got the starring role of his western TV show "The Rifleman", where he played Lucas McCain for 5 seasons. Johnny Crawford, who played his son, Mark, in the series, became like a son to him and a lifelong friend. Outside of his many careers, Chuck was a devote Christian. He had four sons, Michael, Jeff, Steve, and yes, he named his youngest son Kevin, ironically enough. He believed in standing for what he believed, often getting involved in political campaigns and helping children with disabilities. He also loved the outdoors and nature, much like Lucas McCain.
