Sometimes I debate if I prefer this film over REBEL WITHOUT A CAUSE as my favorite James Dean movie. George Stevens film feels just as relevant today and just as modernity made on a cinematic level - the film is still just as fresh. Instead of shooting in CinemaScope he went open matte 1.66:1 and really opened up the screen to “giant” Texan vistas of the antique gothic ranch Reata. And it’s cast is more than capable, so powerful, memorable, and numerable are the stars that they need not be mentioned here. Just watch the film if you haven’t already. (Deep River Savages, 66, Eyeball, 76) As is sadly to expected from the maker of 'Cannibal Ferox', 81, this film opens with a wholly gratuitous scene of animal cruelty, from a real bullfight, that has nothing to do with the plot to come. After which, KOI is several notches less demented than many of it's genre. The movie's focus is on the #psychologicalhorror of murder & near bereft of sleaze & there's no nudity, nor gore. The blurb with the version I saw said that the film was U/C but film doesn't even come close to nasty. Taking inspiration from the shadow techniques pioneered in Tourneur's 'Cat People', 42, the movie is stylishly shot, on location Montseny, in the Pyranes, in Catalonia, by Spanish cinematographer #josefaguayojr (Beware Of Darkness, 73) There's an aduquate score from #marcellogiombini. Though it lacks the violence & intensity, KOI is in some ways similar to Fulci's superior 'Don't Torture A Duckling', 72, in that red herring attention is drawn to the outsiders of an insular community. Taking it's title from a quote a "knife of ice which penetrates the senses down to the depth of conscience" falsely attributed to Edgar A. Poe, this film begun life as a remake of & is something of a reworking of Siodmak's 1st rate, noir #cultclassic 'The Spiral Staircase', 46, Lenzi's all time favourite movie. Having taken major roles in 3 of the auteur's previous #giallomovies 'So Sweet, So Perverse', 69, 'Orgasmo', 69 & 'A Quiet Place to Kill' #carrollbaker who does an excellent, show stealing job in the lead a Martha, a woman who has been mute since the age of 13, as a result of the trauma of having witnessed the death of her parents. She seems now to be just the type of a serial killer targeting beautiful young women. Also taking the male lead #alanscott who gives a weak performance. Better support comes from #evelynstewart #eduardofajardo #silviamonelli #georgerigaud & #francofantasia . Too tame but almost recommended.
