We did lights, sound, and video. Also happy that life my schedule allows me the time. Huge thank you to RTH rthaudiovisual for the awesome gear! (It’s nice to get get my hands dirty and play with these tools again :) I did all the uprigging 👊) Also had a blast putting together a compact light show to help accent the sweet set pieces our awesome craftsman dads built… all having to setup in 5 mins or less… and tear down in 5 mins or less. Estella's Revenge by Barbara Havelocke Predictive text game, finish the sentence... I just love.... I've not read Great Expectations, but I was drawn to read this by both the book description and the cover. I am so glad I did. It is not a retelling of the book but from Estella's point of view, rather than Pips. Told over two timelines, the storyline moves seamlessly between her younger years and her marriage. The storyline explores the toxic relationship between the mother and daughter. Her mother was badly let down and so teaches Estella how to treat people. The background of Miss Havisham and an explanation of sort into why she's how she is. I didn't expect this. The only non-toxic friendships she had were between her and Pip and her female companion. Pip would just accept everything she threw at him. She couldn't marry him because she knew he loved her, and eventually would hate her. I’ve always loved Great Expectations in all its iterations – my husband loves the 1946 film version where John Mills plays Pip (I think he is far too old), but my favourite is the TV mini series where Gillian Anderson portrays Miss Havisham. As a child, the scene where Miss H goes up in flames terrified me and still does. As an aside, for my OU degree creative writing module, I wrote a short story called Miss Havisham’s Ghost. It earned me a good mark, but it never saw the light of day, as it got woven into another story a couple of years later. Just goes to show that we all have a budding Dickens in us somewhere! But back to Estella’s Revenge. I absolutely loved it and have given it a worthy five stars. The writing is impeccable and immaculate. The plot is original and entertaining. It’s not a retelling of GE though, you have to remember that – it’s the story from Estella’s pov, NOT Pip’s, so anything can happen, and it does. There are a lot of the original characters, but also others that are new. But – if I could keep two things from the story I know and love, it would be Estella and Pip coming together at the end (soppy Love Actually stuff I know), and Bentley falling off his horse and breaking his neck after being cruel to it ie the ‘horse’s revenge’. To discover whether either of these happen in Estella’s Revenge, you’ll have to read it to find out. My fellow Pigeons and I read this in ten staves over ten days with The Pigeonhole book club and thoroughly enjoyed commenting as we went along. Great Expectations Rating: ⭐️⭐️⭐️⭐️1/2 Format: Hardcover Read: April There’s nothing like reading classics. I was gifted this for Christmas last year and I’ll admit to start with I was worried it would be dull as it does start off that way, but the moment that Mr. Jaggers enters the story it starts to pick up pace and gets interesting. It has been a slower read as I’ve picked it up in between reading other books as I enjoy juggling a couple at a time, but March and April was where I really got to get into the thick of it The moral is to cherish the life you have and that having money doesn’t necessarily bring happiness, nor does it win the heart of someone who clearly was never interested. I had time to check out a couple adaptations, and while the version starring Gwenyth Paltrow and Ethan Hawke leaves a lot out and changes the story a little to be a modern twist, I preferred it as it got the themes of the story better than the other one I watched. There’s a new miniseries on Disney+ starring Olivia Coleman as Miss Havisham and while I loved her part and the part of Mr Jaggers, the show totally changed the story to the point it may as well have been given a different name. It was made grittier for the sake of it and added elements in that weren’t in the book at all. Overall I enjoyed this experience and I’m interested in checking out a couple more of Dickens work.
