“THE OTHER DRUMMER” Yes, the mystery has been speculated upon for 45(!) years since this album came out. You can find musings online, but today (in the next post) we have verification by none other than the guitarist on the Matterhorn gig, Grammy-nominated Grant Geissman! And with that, we will wish one of the great percussion masters of all time, Mr. BILLY COBHAM, a very happy birthday! Matterhorn is the only Pablo recording Mr.Cobham performed on, and it was as a guest of Pablo mainstay, & fellow top-of-the-mountain drummer, Louis Bellson, who composed all of the pieces. It’s a unique release, one of the few suites for drums you’re likely to find. Bellson gives credit to his alma mater: Duke University, or rather, University of Duke Ellington, for his education & inspiration. Pretty neat hearing Ellingtonian-type arrangements applied upon a percussive sonic landscape. And the lineup is rife with great names & studio legends; from Snooky Young, Conte Candoli & Ross Tompkins, to young bucks who were just coming up, like Walter Johnson, Ron King, & our friend, Grant Geissman. Grab it if you see it! •Title: #Matterhorn •Catalog: #pablo_2310_834 ( #pablo_K10_834) •Recorded: December 11, 12, 14, 1978 •Released: 1979 •Personnel: - #LouieBellson - #BillyCobham - #RossTompkins - #GrantGeissman - #JoelDiBartelo - #ConteCandoli - #WalterJohnson - #RonKing - #BobbyShew - #SnookyYoung - #WilliamCBooth - #GilFalco - #DanaHughes - #AlanKaplan - #RobertPayne - #PeteChristlieb - #AndyMackintosh - #DonMenza - #JoeRomano - #RichardSpencer - #JohnEArnold -RobertZimmitti •Produced by: Mr.Belson •📸Photography: #MalcomLubliner •📝Liner notes: Mr.Belson •🖌Layout & Design: #NormanGranz & #SheldonMarks •🎚Engineer: #ValValentin •Studio: HeiderFilmways, Hollywood • #PabloJazzRecords #PabloRecords

Now playing, 1979 (Plastic Products pressing). : Being so busy with preparing our house for the market, I haven’t had time to listen to much vinyl the past few days and I missed the birthday yesterday of one of my favorite jazz pianists - Mary Lou Williams (May 8, 1910 - May 28, 1981). This is just her @montreuxjazzfestival in 1978 and it’s lovely. She starts with a medley going through every style of her jazz journey starting with earliest roots from a spiritual to ragtime to boogie to bop and beyond. I’ve seen the video of this concert and she’s just so comfortable at the piano, it’s astounding. : #marylouwilliams - piano & producer #normangranz #sheldonmarks - design & layout #philstern - cover photo #nathentoff - liner notes #montreuxjazzfestival - venue #pablorecords - label : #jazz #jazzmusic #jazzvinyl #vinyl #records #lp #solorecital #montreuxjazzfestival1978 #jazzpiano #jazzvinyllovers #jazzvinylcommunity #vinylcommunity #vinyljunkie #vinyladdict #vinylcollection #recordcollection #discogs #megacity

Happy 125th Birthday to the great American genius, Duke Ellington! Like yesterday’s post, Up in Duke’s Workshop is a sketchbook, a rough draft, or assembly of works in progress. It was recorded in New York over several sessions between ‘69-’71, as a way for Duke to a) make good use of the salaried cats on the payroll, & b) breathe life into what he had written out the night before. This album is a deep cut to be sure; for true Ellingtonians, Pablovians, completists, or, as in the case of this particular cassette release by the #MusicalHeritageSociety, music lovers who enjoy pouring something rare & interesting in their ears. Think of this as a gem from Duke’s vault. Special thanks to @ishotchad for gifting his dad’s Pablo cassettes 🥃 •Title: #UpInDukesWorkshop •Catalog: #pablo_2310_815 ( #MHC_9065L) •Released: 1976 (1979/1985 cassette) •Personnel: - #DukeEllington - #WildBillDavis - #CootieWilliams -WillieCook - #CatAnderson - #JimmyOwens - #MercerEllington - #MoneyJohnson -FredStone -AlRubin - #EddiePreston - #JohnnyColes - #BennyGreen - #BennyPowell - #LawrenceBrown - #BusterCooper - #ChuckConnors - #BootyWood -JulianPriesten - #MalcomTaylor -TyreeGlen -VincePrudente - #RussellProcope - #PaulGonsalves - #HaroldAshby -HarryCarney - #JohnnyHodges -NorrisTurney -BuddyPearson -HaroldMinerve -PaulKondziela -VictorGaskin -JoeBenjamin -RufusJones •Produced by: Mr.Ellington •📸Photography: #NormanGranz (on the LP) •📝Liner notes: #StanleyDance •🖌Layout & Design: Mr.Granz & #SheldonMarks (LP) • #PabloJazzRecords #PabloRecords

It’s always a treat when Norman writes the liners, with his frank & cool manner of turning a phrase. But we get the rare treat of two liners, the other by Mr.Stanley Dance, a writer on Ellingtonia, who penned em on the last post’s record. Even as late in their careers as they were, (& they weren’t youngins), Duke’s longstanding big band is a beautiful force, equally dealing power, syncopation, virtuosity, & lush sensitivity. This is a gorgeous two sides of classic, & newer pieces, which the ever writing Duke always sprinkled in. Also as a treat, when nearby the famous Fondation Maeght museum, Granz took Duke, Woodyard, & John Lamb to meet the renown artist Joan Miro, for which they played three tunes in a short film you can find on Youtube. •Title: #InTheUncommonMarket •Catalog: #pablo_2308_247 •Recorded: various dates in the 1960’s •Released: #1986 •Personnel: - #DukeEllington - #CootieWilliams - #CatAnderson - #RoyBurrows - #RayNance - #LawrenceBrown - #BusterCooper - #ChuckConnors - #JohnnyHodges - #RussellProcope - #JimmyHamilton - #PaulGonsalves - #HarryCarney - #ErnieShepard - #SamWoodyard •Produced by: #NormanGranz •📸Photography: Mr.Granz & #QuitmanDennis •📝Liner notes: Mr.Granz & #StanleyDance •🖌Layout & Design: Mr.Granz & #SheldonMarks •🎚Mastering: #GeorgeHorn, Fantasy Studios, Berkeley • #Vinyl #LP #Jazz #PabloJazzRecords #PabloRecords #PabloToday

Mr. Ellington & his band had been on a worldwide tour, acting as Jazz ambassadors through far reaching places such as India, the Middle East, & the far East (where Jazz was less commonly known & enjoyed). And of course, they fully covered & criss-crossed all of Jazz-loving Europe. Duke, feeling especially appreciated by Swedish audiences, may have performed his pinnacle show of the tour in Stockholm, where this night of music was recorded. This album has a beautiful range of moods, feelings, & energies. The laidback, restrained pace of numbers in the first half are a masterclass. And the eponymous 14min masterpiece is a tour de force, showcasing perhaps best of all, the great American genius’ range. Norman Granz had wanted to record the heck outta Duke for a long time, but their personalities didn’t seem to jive till late in Ellington’s career. Thankfully we do have 12 recordings on Pablo, and pretty special ones at that. Additionally, in the years that followed Duke’s 1974 passing, all of the Pablo tentpole artists released tribute albums to the great man. •Title: #Harlem •Catalog: #pablo_2308_245 ( #pacd_2308_245_2) •Recorded: March 9, #1964 •Released: #1985 •Personnel: - #DukeEllington - #LawrenceBrown - #BusterCooper - #ChuckConnors - #CootieWilliams - #CatAnderson - #RolfEricson - #HerbieJones - #JohnnieHodges - #RussellProcope - #JimmyHamilton - #PaulGonsalves - #HarryCarney - #JimmyWoode - #SamWoodyard •Produced by: #NormanGranz •📸Photography: #PhilStern •📝Liner notes: #StanleyDance •🖌Layout & Design: Mr.Granz & #SheldonMarks •🎚Mastering: #PhilDeLancie, Fantasy Studios, Berkeley, CA •Studio: #Konserthuset, Stockholm, Sweden • #Jazz #PabloJazzRecords #PabloRecords

AN EDUCATION! Two of the things we treasure about the Pablo catalog are the experimentation & deep study. Granz had already recorded SO thoroughly by the time he sold Verve to MGM in 1960, it’s obvious from his Pablo efforts that he was really playing with form at this point. There exist so many wonderful, novel, niche ideas thrown at the wall throughout its entirety, we’re the beneficiaries of what a true patron contributes to culture when "ars gratia artis" is actually the north star. Between ‘74-’75, while wrapping the world in his sonic gold, Oscar made appointments in New York, London, & Los Angeles, to capture these intimate conversations with Sweets, Little Jazz, Mumbles, Dizzy, & the young buck of the group, Faddis. (In ‘82 he’d make sure to grab a sesh with Hubbard too.) These appointments provided such rich results that Norman decided to put out this sample compilation; two contributions from each of the legends, & one from the rookie. As a result, what we hold here, (as the ever insightful Mr.Green so eloquently writes), is an exhibition of building upon the duologue greatness established by Pops & Fatha, Duke & Blanton, & even earlier pioneers like Venuti & Lang. Not only that, it WON the Grammy Award for Best Improvised Jazz Solo, 1980! If you’re wanting to sharpen your ear on the stylings & contributions of the trumpet kings, this release is a great place to start. Then deepen it further by hitting your local record shop to search for the full releases from each of these dynamic sessions. Side note: It’s a treat to hear Oscar bust out the Hammond on his cuts with Roy. •Title: #Jousts •Catalog: #pablo_2310_817 •Released: #1978 •Personnel: - #OscarPeterson - #ClarkTerry - #RoyEldridge - #DizzyGillespie - #HarrySweetsEdison - #JonFaddis •Produced by: #NormanGranz •📸Photography: #PhilStern •📝Liner notes: #BennyGreen •🖌Layout & Design: Mr.Granz & #SheldonMarks •Studios: #MGMRecordingStudiosLosAngeles, # #CherokeeRecordingStudiosLosAngeles, #AdvisionStudiosLondon, #RCARecordingStudiosNewYork#Vinyl #LP #Jazz #PabloJazzRecords #PabloRecords

#VerveRecords  (MV 4015) #LeeKonitz (as) #DonFerrara (tp) #SalMosca (p) #PeterInd (b) #ShadowWilson (ds) Liner Notes - #NatHentoff Cover Photography By - #WilliamClaxton Art Direction - #SheldonMarks A2 "Starway To The Stars"(Written-By - Signorelli, Malneck, Parrish) 同じ西海岸の代表白人アート・ペッパーのような情緒的なアルトとは対照的な淡白で渋いバラッド。 A3 "Movin' Around"(Written-By - Ferrara) 再びフェララのアップテンポな曲。コニッツに合わせたフェララ、モスカのまとまりのある演奏が聴き処。 B1 "Kary's Trance"(Written-By - Konitz) ジャック・ロレンスの "Play Fiddle Play" のコードを使ったコニッツのオリジナル。 B2 "Crazy She Calls Me"(Written-By - Caesar, Meyer, Kahn) ペット抜きのワンホーン、渋いバラッド。 B3 "Billie's Bounce"(Written-By - Parker) 何と!

If you’re a lover of love songs, of simply beautiful melodies & lyrics, you’ll undoubtedly, at some point on your journey, be introduced to today’s birthday boy, Monsieur Michel LeGrand, who, as one of the greatest composers of the 2nd half of the 20th century, sadly only made one solitary album for Pablo, & this is it baby. Still that makes it all the more special, I’d say. Another thing you’ll be hard pressed to find again in the Pablo catalog is this small but interesting detail in the personnel credits; as leader, Legrand is mentioned first, but then it’s kinda backwards with the rest of the rhythm section being mentioned (with legendary bassist Ron Carter, and Pablo standby Grady Tate on drums, Bertoncini on 6-string), & then we get the brass & reeds. I think I like it for a change. Speaking of reeds, man Zoot sounds great. He’s such a warm & sensitive player, just perfect for this LeGrand album, which is just what you’d want out of a release titled, 𝘈𝘧𝘵𝘦𝘳 𝘵𝘩𝘦 𝘙𝘢𝘪𝘯. There's also a dose of classics Michel penned with the Bergmans, some nice organ, flugelhorn, & a piece written for an Orson Welles film, 𝘍 𝘪𝘴 𝘧𝘰𝘳 𝘍𝘢𝘬𝘦. Honestly, it’s a unique & great little sleeper. Even if it just had Carter & Zoot on it, it’d be worth it. But it’s even more interesting than that, & it burns at times too, so I’d keep an eye out for it in the bins. •Title: #AfterTheRain •Catalog: #pablo_2312_139 •Recorded: May 28, #1982 •Released: #1983 •Personnel: - #MichelLeGrand - #RonCarter - #GradyTate - #GeneBertoncini - #JoeWilder - #ZootSims - #PhilWoods •Produced by: Mr.LeGrand & #NatShapiro •Associate Producer: #AnnRuckert •📸Photography: #PhilStern •📝Liner notes: Mr.Shapiro •🖌Layout & Design: #NormanGranz & #SheldonMarks •🎚Sound Engineer: #MikeMoran •Studio: #RCARecordingStudios, NYC • #Vinyl #LP #Jazz #PabloJazzRecords #PabloRecords #PabloToday

Happy birthday to Boniface Ferdinand Leonard "Buddy" DeFranco! Mr. De Franco appeared on 4 Pablo records with such luminaries as Art Tatum, Bud Powel, JJ Johnson, & on this album, the great OP quartet with Pass, NHØP, & Martin Drew. Buddy was king of clarinet in an era when the instrument had, according to many, already seen its most popular days. Growing up hearing Benny Goodman & Artie Shaw, Buddy was inspired at an early age, & was winning Jazz contests at 14. He met Pablo founder & producer Norman Granz early on, recording for his earlier labels Norgan & Verve. This album was recorded around 10 years after leading the Glenn Miller orchestra for a decade, & in the liner notes, it sounds like Norman is reintroducing him to the public in a way. So the title, “Hark”, as in, “listen up!”, is quite appropriate. This album is largely laid back, but Buddy & boys DO cook it up on a couple numbers. No one can sit too very still standing atop the powder keg that’s this rhythm section. De Franco even throws in a couple new originals, which are published by Norman’s PABLITO publishing arm (see the details on the album labels side 1 & 2). •Title: #Hark •Catalog: #pablo_2310_915 •Recorded: April 30, #1985 •Personnel: - #BuddyDeFranco - #OscarPeterson - #JoePass - #NielsHenningOrstedPedersen - #MartinDrew •Produced by: #NormanGranz •📸Photography: #PhilBray •📝Liner notes: Mr.Granz •🖌Layout & Design: Mr.Granz & #SheldonMarks •🎚Sound Engineer: #StevenHart •🎚Ass’t Engineer: #MichaelRosen •Studio: #FantasyRecordingStudios#Vinyl #LP #Jazz #PabloJazzRecords #PabloRecords #FantasyRecords

First off, happy birthday to Mr. Bobby Durham! He made no less than 17 contributions to the Pablo catalog, & all great stuff. A lot with the Tommy Flanagan trio (w/ Keter Betts on bass), especially when they backed Ella. A lot with OP, Pass, NHØP. Truly, along with Bellson, Mickey Roker, Grady Tate, & Eddie Locke, these are the main time keepers on the label. Secondly: THIS. ALBUM. BURNS. No kidding, these cats are playing for keeps. Look, sometimes there can be…a bit of a squealing contest when there’s brass-a-plenty. You know what I mean? But this wasn’t a JATP showcase. Right outta the gate, Ray, Pass, Durham, & OP lay the tracks, real hot too, UP-tempo. And these three horn legends run hard on those rails. I’ll say it again, this things cooks. Tasty & athletic solos. And the combo of Diz, Freddie, & Clark is so well balanced; three very distinct voices. Additionally, Norman was insightful enough to know that he had captured a masterclass here, so to be clear on who was in the spotlight, in what order, on what track, he listed it in detail. I don’t think I’ve seen tunes broken down like that on any other release. And here’s the good news/bad news about this album; it was such a scorcher, there’s a WHOLE other album of material from the Summit sessions. It’s called 𝘛𝘩𝘦 𝘈𝘭𝘵𝘦𝘳𝘯𝘢𝘵𝘦 𝘉𝘭𝘶𝘦𝘴, & the bad news is that it is not at all easy to find & as a result, can be really pricey. So if you dig this one, keep your eyes out for that one. Thirdly, how early 80's is that guitar strap of Joe's! 🌈 And fourthly, this was a gift from a dear friend of the account, @chiaragogo. Thank you Chiara. •Title: #TheTrumpetSummit •Catalog: #pablo_2312_114 •Recorded: March 10, #1980 •Personnel: - #OscarPeterson - #DizzyGillespie - #FreddieHubbard - #ClarkTerry - #JoePass - #RayBrown - #BobbyDurham •Produced by: #NormanGranz •📸Photography: #PhilStern •📝Liner notes: Mr.Granz •🖌Layout & Design: Mr.Granz & #SheldonMarks •🎚Engineer: #SteveWilliams •🎚Remix Engineer: #AngelBalestier •Studio: #GroupIV, Hollywood, Ca • #Vinyl #LP #Jazz #PabloJazzRecords #PabloRecords #PabloToday

Thought we’d sandwich Lockjaw between two big Pablo brassers, so today we’re having a look at ol Sweets himself, Mr. Harry Edison. Sweets, who played with 𝘮𝘢𝘯𝘺 20th century Jazz titans, linked up early with Basie, and it was actually bandmate Pres who gave Harry his dulcet moniker. Additionally, being the Basie lover he was, Frank Sinatra used Harry many times in sessions. Sweets’ friendship with Pablo founder Norman Granz goes way back to early Jazz at the Philharmonic days. It’s no surprise then that he appears at least 28 times in Pablo’s catalog; 2 of the 3 Trumpet Kings releases, many times backing up his old boss Basie, Ella, alongside keyboard gods Tatum & OP, & leading MANY sessions with innumerable combinations. Norman wanted more Sweets recorded for the ages and he made it happen. The album you see here is actually a 1987 Fantasy reissue, identical to the original 1980 release. •Title: #TheBestOfHarryEdison •Catalog: #pablo_2405_403 •Originally released: #1980 •Fantasy re-issue: #1987 •Personnel: - #HarrySweetsEdison - #EddieLockjawDavis - #CountBasie - #DoloCoker - #JohnHeard - #HarveyNewmark - #JimmieSmith •Produced by: #NormanGranz •📸Photography: #PhilStern •🖌Layout & Design: Mr.Granz & #SheldonMarks#Vinyl #LP #Jazz #PabloJazzRecords #PabloRecords

Let’s do a short series of Pablo’s, “The Best of…” and get it kicked off with the sincerest birthday wishes to Little Jazz himself, Mr. Roy Eldridge. Little graced the Pablo catalog with no less than 26 albums in every arrangement and setting; from duets with OP, small groups, medium to big bands, in some adding to the horn section, some acting as leader.. Roy was one of Norman’s favorite hornmen, and cats like him, from Granz’ formative years, were having an increasingly difficult time getting recording dates in the early 70’s, many considering them past their prime. However Norman felt that they still had much to offer. Us Pablovians agree. Norman once said about Roy, "Every time he's on he does the best he can, no matter what the conditions are. And Roy is so intense about everything, so that it's far more important to him to dare, to try to achieve a particular peak, even if he falls on his ass in the attempt, than it is to play safe. That's what jazz is all about."[ Pretty terrific endorsement. This sampling of Roy’s Pablo output features him in leadership positions, blowing & singing his heart out, and backed by many Pablo standbys including Oscar, Joe, Niels, Bags, Ray, Durham, & others. Plenty to enjoy here. Thank you Roy, thank you backing cats, & thank you Norman for spending the bread on getting these guys recorded for us to enjoy over 50+ years later. •Title: #TheBestOfRoyEldridge •Catalog: #pablo_2310_857 •Released: #1980 •Personnel: - #RoyEldridge - #OscarPeterson - #NormanSimmons - #JoePass - #NielsHenningOrstedPedersen - #RayBrown - #TedSturgis - #BobbyDurham - #EddieLocke - #MiltJackson - #NorrisTurney - #BuddJohnson •Produced by: #NormanGranz •📸Photography: #PhilStern •🖌Layout & Design: Mr.Granz & #SheldonMarks#Vinyl #LP #Jazz #PabloJazzRecords #PabloRecords

Happy birthday to the grandfather of Jazz violinists, the co-founder of The Hot Club of France, Mr. Stephane Grappelli. Mr.Grappelli had an extremely hardscrabble upbringing, stating once that he attempted to eat flies to abate his hunger as a child. But through busking, orchestra pits, & good mentors, he found his way to success. However it wouldn’t be the smooth road one might expect after the Hot Club. For a time he found himself outside the vanguard, not fancying bop trends of the 50’s. It would take a re-appreciation third act later in his life for him to experience another thriving touring & recording era that lasted right up until the year he passed. And along that path he laid down three fabulous Pablo albums; •a “lost” 1957 release from the Granz Vault; a violin-off between Grappelli & Stuff Smith, 𝘝𝘪𝘰𝘭𝘪𝘯𝘴 𝘕𝘰 𝘌𝘯𝘥, backed by OP’s OG Trio (Ray Brown & Herbie Ellis, + Jo Jones) (pablo 2310-907) •the much beloved 𝘛𝘪𝘷𝘰𝘭𝘪 𝘎𝘢𝘳𝘥𝘦𝘯𝘴 , with Joe & NHØP (pablo 2308-220) • and the album you see here, recorded the very same night, at the same venue, again with Joe & Niels-Henning Ørsted Pedersen, but also with Mickey Roker & Oscar’s most wonderful contributions. One has to imagine for a moment, being an old Jazz lion, getting to live-date two albums with four of the coldest cats in the world backing you up. Now that had to be a night to savor in a long life of ups & down. Today we celebrate Mr.Grappelli’s enduring spirit & artistry. The release seen here is a 1990 Fantasy-era CD re-release of the original 1982 LP drop, skillfully digitally remastered by #PhilDeLancie. Hey, before Bags’ birthday is too far in the rear view mirror, why don’t we talk about another “Soul” album of his, Soul Believer, where Milt SINGS! (maybe shoulda called it Bags Pipes!) It’s kinda cute to hear Milt being bashful with his singing, & he spends the full length of the liner notes trying to convince us that; a) he used to sing with his brother Albert Jackson when they were first cutting their entertainment teeth, and b) this isn’t a big career turn for him just for a money grab (as if the people were clamoring for Milt to do anything other than play those sweet vibes). He drops a little fantastic 70’s astrological speak at the top too, which seems consistently hip with Bags; gotta love him. And you know what; Joe Turner (or even Mumbles) he ain’t, but it’s yet another enjoyable experiment funded by the great Jazz impresario of the 20th century, Mr. Norman Granz. And 45yrs later we get to enjoy what might not have otherwise been possible. It seems to have been Cedar Walton’s idea, & then Ray Brown further encouraged Milt. And I think we’re all glad they went through with it, if not only for the novelty of the singing, then for the all too seldom appearance of Mr.Walton (who tickles 5x on Pablo, always with Bags), as well as the chance to hear Billy Higgins hit skins! (only four other Pablo outings, two with Cedar & Milt as well). Does this fun Pablo release leave YOU…a Soul Believer? ;) •Title: #SoulBeliever •Catalog: #pablo_2310_832 •Recorded:January 20, September 18 & 19, #1978 •Released: #1979 •Personnel: - #MiltJackson - #CedarWalton - #JohnCollins - #DennisBudimer - #RayBrown - #FrankSeverino - #BillyHiggins - #PlasJohnson - #MichaelLang - #IanUnderwood •Produced by: Mr.Brown •📸Photography: #PhilStern •📝Liner notes: Mr.Jackson •🖌Layout & Design: #NormanGranz / #SheldonMarks •🎚Sound Engineer: #ValValentin •Studio: #HeiderFilmways, Hollywood, California • #Vinyl #LP #Jazz #PabloJazzRecords #PabloRecords

We’ve got a lot to celebrate today. Firstly, Happy birthday to the man to whom we owe more than %95 of all Pablo Record album covers (including this one). A photographer whose career would have been legendary even without shooting for Pablo, but who created an indelible aesthetic for the label, (& Jazz at large), of warm & intimate moments among cats & their artistry; Mr. Phil Stern. Please look him up. Secondly it’s Mickey Roker’s birthday! Mr. Roker’s drums appeared on no less than 19(!) Pablo recordings. A favorite of Dizzy’s, Bags, & real stalwart of the label.Thank you Mr. Roker! Thirdly we have a young Mr. Benjamin Franklin Brown, just a few years out of the University of Miami, funktifying both sides of this wax. His birthday was Aug.25, & Mr. Brown is still with us, thriving on the East coast, having carved an incredible career out for himself since this album date, especially as a heavy Broadway bassist! If someone knows how I can get in touch with him, I would love to interview him about the making of this album. Dizzy’s Party was recorded 47yrs ago this month, and you know what, it definitely feels like it. It ages well, while acting as a time capsule of later-in-life Diz, surrounding himself with youngbloods like our recently departed Ray Pizzi, & Mr. Paulinho da Costa, who along with Mr.Brown, is also alive & well. (if someone knows Paulinho, that would be a special interview as well!) •Title: #DizzysParty •Catalog: #pablo_2310_784 •Recorded: September 15 & 16, #1976 •Released: #1977 •Personnel: - #DizzyGillespie - #RayPizzi - #RodneyJones - #BenjaminFranklinBrown - #MickeyRoker - #PaulinhoDaCosta •Produced by: #NormanGranz •📸Photography: #PhilStern •📝Liner notes: Mr.Granz •🖌Layout & Design: Mr.Granz & #SheldonMarks •🎚Sound Engineer: #GroverHelsley •Studio: RCA Studios, Los Angeles • #Vinyl #LP #Jazz #PabloJazzRecords #PabloRecords #RCARecords

Happy birthday Charlie Parker Bird would have been 103. Interesting to think about. Not entirely impossible. No one cultivates their artistry in a vacuum, especially the greats. What goes into their ears is largely the same as other musicians, but how they hear it, & what subsequently comes out, through their artistry, talent, & alchemy, is what makes them legendary. They hear the world as only they can, & the lifelong endeavor is to get good enough to get it out. What a feeling of full circle for Norman, to have recorded Bird with strings, (something Parker fought hard for, because he heard it & needed to actualize it). And by doing so, watered the seeds of the young Passalacqua, who was forever inspired to pull the sounds out of his own dreamscape. All us here feel passionately about the giants; their work puts a sonic reality to our inarticulate upward grasps towards the divine. But I gotta believe the giants love other giants even more; they understand them better, they’ve built their whole lives around also following that demanding clarion call...and they’ve actually reached the mountain top. What a place of understanding to pay hommage from. And Joe does that with such love & warmth in this album. Every track is taken from the two “with Strings” albums Bird released with Norman. All much beloved standards, and extrapolated as only Joe could. •Title: #IRemeberCharlieParker •Catalog: #pablo_2312_109 •Date: February 17, #1979 •Personnel: - #JoePass •Produced by: #NormanGranz •📸Photography: #PhilStern •📝Liner notes: Mr.Granz •🖌Layout & Design: Mr.Granz & #SheldonMarks •🎚Sound Engineer: #ValValentin •Studio: #GroupIV, Hollywood, California • #Vinyl #LP #Jazz #PabloJazzRecords #PabloRecords #PabloToday #CharlieParker

Now playing in stereo, 1984 (RTI pressing). : This was a soulful way to kick off my Saturday! Two observations stand out to me: 1) in 1984, jazz was almost dead besides some elements of fusion and the smooth jazz that would go on to take over the 90’s. And these guys all had such epic careers and were still hitting it hard even though the audience for jazz had shrunk quite significantly; 2) it’s really fun to see Milt Jackson play soul jazz with Gene Harris! While there are a couple MJQish type songs, it’s just cool to see him in such a different setting than he was in for so many years. For the reasons above and that Pablo is usually affordable, this qualifies as cheap heat. I picked up my VG+ copy at my local store for only $2. My favorite tunes are the title track and of course, I have to like “Chloe” since it’s one of my daughters name! : #miltjackson - vibes #geneharris - piano & electric keyboard #raybrown - bass & producer #mickeyroker - drums #bobsimpson - engineer #normangranz - layout, design, cover photo & liner notes #sheldonmarks - layout & design #pablorecords - label : #jazz #jazzmusic #jazzvinyl #vinyl #lp #records #soulroute #souljazz #jazzvibes #jazzvinyllovers #jazzvinylcommunity #jazzvinyloftheday #vinylcommunity #vinyljunkie #vinyladdict #vinylcollection #recordcollection #independentrecordstore #therecordexchange

Happy Birthday Mr.Ellington! Edward Kennedy Ellington was born this day, 1899, & passed May 24th, 1974. In 1980 Pablo Records released 5 Pablo Today albums in tribute to the legend, headed up by the very best of the stables. What you hold in your hands here is a sampler of those 5 releases by Sarah(2x), Quadrant (Joe, Bags, Ray, & Mickey), Mumbles, & Zoot. It’s a world class tribute from the heart of artists who deeply felt moved by the man & his music. The whole series is brimming with respect, admiration, & artistry that you can only get from these pinnacle musicians, players who all studied & graduated Maxima Cum Laude from the Ellington School of Swing. Here they’re returned to teach a master class with material from the canon. Especially moving is the last cut on side 1, Echoes of Harlem, where Clark & Joe do a sensitive & somber rendition that’s simply lovely, something that you’d imagine played at Duke’s memorial. May his memory be eternal. •Title: #ACelebrationOfDuke •Catalog: #pablo_2312_119 Recorded: January 21 1980, March 11 1980, May 13 1980, September 12 & 13 #1979 •Released: #1980 •Personnel: - #ZootSims - #SarahVaughan - #ClarkTerry - #JoePass - #MiltJackson - #RayBrown - #MickeyRoker - #JackWilson - #FrankSeverino - #JimmyRowles - #JohnClay - #MikeWofford •Produced by: #NormanGranz •📸Photography: #PhilStern & #TomCopi •🖌Layout & Design: Mr.Granz & #SheldonMarks •🎚Sound Engineer: #DennisSands, #SteveWilliams, #BobSimpson •Studio: #GroupIV & #RCAStudios, New York • #Jazz #PabloJazzRecords #PabloRecords #PabloToday

Day 3 of celebrating the regal Duke of Ellington, & showcasing Pablo Today releases made in tribute to the man postmortem. Duke’s impact on Jazz is immeasurable, & oftentimes his influence on vocalists is underrated. But here we have Ms.Vaughan with her second offering on the subject, Song Book Two, where she makes every word her own, but also takes plenty of opportunities to leave lyrics to the side & just blow like a hornman. Her mastery is imprinted in every groove, & her voice is as strong as ever, some would even say at its strongest. SB2 was assembled from the same sessions as SB1, and has a similar mix of big band, as well as small group numbers. It also sounds just as good as SB1. One fun addition is having sax man Cleanhead add his vocals to the blues track Rocks in My Bed. •Title: #SarahVaughan_DukeEllington_Songbook_Two •Catalog: #pablo_2312_116 •Recorded: August 15, 16, September 12, 13 #1979 •Released: #1980 •Personnel: - #SarahVaughan - #WaymonReed - #FrankWess - #EddieCleanheadVinson - #MikeWofford - #JimmyRowles - #LloydGlenn - #JoePass - #BuckyPizzarelli - #PeeweeCrayton - #AndySimpkins - #BillWalker - #GradyTate - #CharlesRandell - #RoyMcCurdy •Produced by: #NormanGranz •📸Photography: #TomCopi •🖌Layout & Design: Mr.Granz & #SheldonMarks •🎚Sound Engineer: #BobSimpson, #ValValentin •🎚Remix Engineer: #DennisSands •Studio: #GroupIV Hollywood, CA • #Jazz #PabloJazzRecords #PabloRecords #PabloToday

This is one beautiful sounding album…wow. The arrangements by Billy Byers really ring, & the sound engineering & mixing by Val, Bob, & Dennis are clean, clear, & warm. Really great work here to set up what’s truly a THICK lineup of top men backing up Sassie’s gorgeous vocals. And this is just Song Book ONE, ha! You don’t too often find Pass, Zoot, JJ, or Bucky in a big band context, especially in this era (& you unfortunately don’t hear Bucky much at all on Pablo. @johnpizzarelliofficial familiar with this session of your dear dad’s?) If you love this album too, you’re in good company, because it was Grammy nominated for Best Female Jazz Vocal Performance, 1980, only to be beat out by Pablo’s Ella and Basie; A Perfect Match ( #pablo_2312_110). SB1 is a combination of small group & big band cuts, along with the lovely opening track, which features strings as well. This particular copy was manufactured & released in Spain, which is fun too, because these don’t pop up too often Stateside. Pick this baby up, it’s a real groover & a pleaser. •Title: #SarahVaughan_DukeEllington_Songbook_one •Catalog: #pablo_2312_111 (PN_4001) •Recorded: August 15, 16, September 12, 13 #1979 •Released: #1980 •Personnel: - #SarahVaughan - #WaymonReed - #JJJohnson - #FrankFoster - #FrankWess - #ZootSims - #JimmyRowles - #MikeWofford - #JoePass - #BuckyPizzarelli - #AndySimpkins - #GradyTate - #BillyByers •Produced by: #NormanGranz •📸Photography: #PhilStern •🖌Layout & Design: Mr.Granz & #SheldonMarks •🎚Sound Engineer: #ValValentin & #BobSimpson •🎚Remix: #DennisSands #GroupIVStudios, Hollywood • #Vinyl #Jazz #PabloJazzRecords #PabloRecords #PabloToday

Duke passed in the middle of 1974, at the age of 75. A second era Jazz architect, American music genius, who took Jass from its brothel & Dixieland infancy, and put it up on its feet to walk, giving it brilliant sophistication & elegance. All too soon is appropriate as Duke seemed to still be pushing the boundaries of his imagination till the end. According to 𝘛𝘩𝘦 𝘔𝘢𝘯 𝘞𝘩𝘰 𝘜𝘴𝘦𝘥 𝘑𝘢𝘻𝘻 𝘧𝘰𝘳 𝘑𝘶𝘴𝘵𝘪𝘤𝘦, Tad Hershon’s fantastic biography on Granz, Duke & Norman’s strong personalities had a difficult time lining up. Granz wanted to record Ellington as much as humanly possible, like Tatum, Ella, Oscar, and Pass. Sadly Duke only recorded two releases for Pablo; 𝘋𝘶𝘬𝘦’𝘴 𝘉𝘪𝘨 4 ( #pablo_2310_703) & 𝘛𝘩𝘪𝘴 𝘖𝘯𝘦’𝘴 𝘧𝘰𝘳 𝘉𝘭𝘢𝘯𝘵𝘰𝘯 ( #pablo_2310_721). 10 previously recorded albums were released posthumously; Autumn-life gems like 𝘜𝘱 𝘐𝘯 𝘋𝘶𝘬𝘦’𝘴 𝘞𝘰𝘳𝘬𝘴𝘩𝘰𝘱, 𝘐𝘯𝘵𝘪𝘮𝘢𝘵𝘦 𝘌𝘭𝘭𝘪𝘯𝘨𝘵𝘰𝘯, & most coveted of all, 𝘛𝘩𝘦 𝘌𝘭𝘭𝘪𝘯𝘨𝘵𝘰𝘯 𝘚𝘶𝘪𝘵𝘦𝘴, written for an audience of one, Queen Elizabeth, recorded at Duke’s expense, & only one copy pressed, not to be released publicly in his lifetime. In the 5 or so years after Duke’s passing, Pablo released 9 tributes by nearly all their top recording artists; Pass, Sassie, Quadrant, Zoot, Oscar, Mumbles, Bags, & others. The loss was felt deeply. Leading up to Mr. Ellington’s birthday, we’ll have a look at Pablo Today releases that honor him. Today we have a (sealed!) cassette* (for all you tape heads), of Quadrant's 𝘈𝘭𝘭 𝘛𝘰𝘰 𝘚𝘰𝘰𝘯, 🥂ing the man. Coming out the gates Ray & Mickey get at it hard, then it gets smooth & velvety; filled with feeling & straight from the heart. A powerful drop from four titans. Now if only Stern coulda got a shot with Joe's eyes open! *last image is back of vinyl release •Title: #AllTooSoon •Catalog: #pablo_2312_117 ( #pablo_K12_117) •Date: January 21, #1980 •Personnel: - #JoePass - #MiltJackson - #RayBrown - #MickeyRoker •Produced by: #NormanGranz •📸Photography: #PhilStern •🖌Layout & Design: Mr.Granz & #SheldonMarks •🎚Sound Engineer: #DennisSands#cassette #Jazz #PabloJazzRecords #PabloRecords #PabloToday #DukeEllington

Here it is, Ms.Fitzgerald’s day of birth, & we’re here to ring it in with a blue ribbon winner. The Grammy voting committee certainly agreed that this Pablo release was 𝘳𝘦𝘢𝘭 fine & mellow, bestowing it the award for Best Jazz Vocal Album, 1980, beating out Sassy's 𝘐 𝘓𝘰𝘷𝘦 𝘉𝘳𝘢𝘻𝘪𝘭! ( #pablo_2312_101. I bet 𝘵𝘩𝘢𝘵 made her mad, ha!). But cool to have two Pablo releases nom’d in the same category, in the same year. If you go through the 70’s & 80’s Grammy noms & wins, you’ll be happy to see robust Pablo representation. No surprise to us Pablovians, though. Ella must have had carte blanche with her pick of personnel, because she certainly got ALL top talent. Steadily by her side on most Pablo releases, the ever tasty Mr.Flanagan is again at the keys, with her other favorite accompanist (& grammy nommer) Mr.Pass. Her ex on good terms, Mr.Brown on double bass. And Luigi Bellson rounds out the rhythm section. All four horns are flat-out LEGENDS in Pablovia & beyond, so if this album swung any harder, it’d break a hip. Even Mumbles joins in the middle of side 2. Recorded in 1974, it was held back for 5yrs, & Norman’s wisdom being unquestionable, the timing must have been right, because it was well received in ‘79. It starts out with a cool backbeat version of the titular track, which is always fun to hear these seasoned swingers break loose like that. And it continues to lay down fresh & hot takes of beloved standbys. I mean, what can you say that Leonard Feather didn’t already say better on the back cover? ᴇʟʟᴀ. sᴛɪʟʟ. ᴅᴏɴ’ᴛ. ᴍɪss. Let’s enjoy another celebration for Ms.Fitzgerald on the week of her birthday, with this fantastic, GRAMMY WINNING live recording that won the 1980 Grammy Award for Best Female Jazz Vocal Performance, yeah!. Can you imagine how satisfying it must have been for Bill & Ella to get to do the thing in ‘79, after such long & illustrious careers? Ella had been at it since 1934 & Basie ten years longer. They had recorded together innumerable times over the decades, & here they are, at what’s obviously the Montreux Jazz Festival, (even though the album isn’t specifically titled as such), enjoying a gig in Switzerland with the full band (& traveling Norman Granz style too!) Ella & the band sound strong & swing hard, & that’s at least in good part due to this killin rhythm section comprised of (underrated) Paul Smith, Freddie Green, Keter Betts, & Mickey Roker. Train can’t get off track with 𝘵𝘩𝘰𝘴𝘦 engineers. Just from a layout perspective, you gotta love the double-cover concept Mr.Marks has going on this release, & how "Ella and Basie/Basie and Ella" are switched. It's cute. And you simply can’t post a beautiful rubricated piece of vinyl like this without giving it a lusty n low whistle. What a knockout🔴 •Title: #APerfectMatch •Catalog: #pablo_2312_110 (also #pablo_D2312_110) •Recorded:July 12, #1979 •Released: #1980 •Personnel: - #EllaFitzgerald - #CountBasie - #PaulSmith - #FreddieGreen - #KeterBetts - #MickeyRoker -PeteMinger -SonnyCohn -PaulCohen -RayBrown - #MitchelBootieWood -BillHughes - #MelWanzo -DennisWilson -CharlieFowlkes -EricDixon -BobbyPlater -DannyTurner -KennyHing •Produced by: #NormanGranz •Photo: #PhilStern •Layout & Design: Mr.Granz & #SheldonMarks •Recording Engineer: #DaveRichards •EditingEngineers: #DennisSands #ArneFrager •Mastering Engineer: #GregoryFulginiti •Studio: Mountain Studios, Montreux, Switzerland • #Vinyl #LP #Jazz #PabloJazzRecords #PabloRecords #PabloToday #MontreuxJazzFestival #PabloLive #PabloDigital #SonySystemsDigitalRecording

Let’s take the opportunity on the week of her birthday to regale her majesty, one of the three Granz clients, a Pablo tentpole with over 32 appearances on the label, The Queen of Jazz, The First Lady of Song, Ms. Ella Fitzgerald. Or as Norman dubs her here in Youngian fashion; Lady Time. Not a lot new can be said about our girl; arguably the most influential Jazz singer of all time. 13 Grammys, 40mil+ albums sold, every female Jazz singer you know at least starting their technique on the Fitzgerald foundation. Granz so believed in the import of her musical genius that he basically built Verve on her shoulders with the songbook serieses. But here, as we often do in Pablovia, we find royalty in a more intimate setting; B3 & LB. 11(!) mostly familiar cuts that don’t overstay their welcome, & are rather refreshing in this intimate context. A brisk two-day recording session between old friends, in the middle of a sunny June in Los Angeles. Odds are there weren’t too many duplicate takes, just some relaxed leaning in by life-long pros whose swing could save a sinking ship. And there really 𝘪𝘴 a lotta jammy feel here with signore Luigi Balassoni stirring that pot hard, & well, even Norman said Bill Basie called Jackie a bitch, but in a good way (I swear, read the liner!). You gonna argue with the Count? If Basie called me a swingin bitch, shoot, I’d put it on my tombstone. •Title: #LadyTime •Catalog: #pablo_2310_825 •Date: June 19-20, #1978 •Personnel: - #EllaFitzgerald - #JackieDavis - #LouieBellson •Produced by: #NormanGranz •📸Photography: #PhilStern •📝Liner notes: Mr.Granz •🖌Layout & Design: Mr.Granz & #SheldonMarks •🎚Sound Engineer: #ValValentin •Studio: Los Angeles, Ca • #Vinyl #LP #Jazz #PabloJazzRecords #PabloRecords

Today we celebrate living legend, Pablo recording artist on no less than 7 releases, guitarist John Pisano! Feb.6th was Mr.Pisano’s 92nd birthday & I had the honor of speaking with him & his wonderful wife Jeanne about all things Pisano, Pablo & Pass. This was John’s 1st Pablo recording, but not his 1st session with Pass or Hughart. 15yrs prior the 3, (+ drummer Colin Bailey), cut 𝘍𝘰𝘳 𝘋𝘫𝘢𝘯𝘨𝘰 (on another label;) which would be Pass’ 1st hit after leaving Synanon. While getting treatment, John visited Joe, encouraging him with jam sessions. Mr.Pisano was in the midst of a prolific season with Chico Hamilton, Peggy Lee, Tony Bennett, & was about to start his legendary associations with Herb Alpert & Sergio Mendez. He had a standing gig with Peggy Lee at The Money Tree in Toluca Lake, & once had to sub out. He asked Joe to cover him, & pianist Page Cavanaugh remarked, “man, that was one hell of a sub!” Mr.Pisano spoke about how well he & Pass’s playing styles fit together (John was Joe’s favorite guitarist), & they would continue their friendship recording & touring the world for 30yrs. Mr.Pisano spoke about Pablo producer Eric Miller, & how he would throw ideas at he & Pass. One time Miller projected images in the studio, & had the 2 improvise based on their reactions. Miller encouraged more Pisano recordings in the 90’s, & became a close personal friend of the Pisanos. John & Eric were among the last to see Pass, cheering him up in the hospital just a day or so before he died. Thank you Mr.Pisano, for many years of beautiful playing, & for your contribution to the Pablo Records catalog. God bless & good health to you & Jeanne! Happy birthday to Snooky Young! A stalwart of the Basie band (on & off again for years) is here reunited with his boss in the small-group type setting that Bill was recording a lot of in this, his last act. Also popular with Count is this season, as ever in his life, are the Blues. And if you want a good, evening record to put on, while you’re relaxing with a glass in hand, (or paramour in tow), this is an easy burner. A highlight for me is when JP kicks off side B with a hot cadenza that then falls back into that good feelin, laid back Basie groove, which pervades this warm release. This album was recorded in the 11th hour for the Count, as he would leave this plane less than a year later. A treasured session for all involved, no doubt. When I was a young man waiting tables & drumming at Miceli’s singing waiter restaurant in Universal City, California, Snooky Young came in for lunch with his other old boss, Gerald Wilson, & his fellow Basie/Wilson horn man (& Pablo recording artist), Oscar Brashear. I was lucky enough to serve them & got to eavesdrop on their gilded tales of big band days gone by. They were kind enough to oblige this kid his photo request, which I’ve always held dear. Of them in the picture, only Mr.Brashear is still with us, and on the album, having just recently lost Mr, John Heard, we have Mr.McCurdy. I wish them both continued health. •Title: #MostlyBluesAndSomeOthers •Catalog: #pablo_2310_919 •Recorded: June 22, #1983 •Released: #1986 •Personnel: - #CountBasie, piano - #SnookyYoung, trumpet - #EddieLockjawDavis, tenor sax - #FreddieGreen, rhythm guitar - #JoePass, solo guitar - #JohnHeard, bass - #RoyMcCurdy, drums •Produced by: #NormanGranz •📸Photography: #TadHirshorn •📝Liner notes: #BennyGreen •🖌Layout & Design: Mr.Granz & #SheldonMarks •🎚Engineer: #DennisSands •🎚Mastering: #GeorgeHorn •Studio: Group IV Studios • #Vinyl #LP #Jazz #PabloJazzRecords #PabloRecords #Fantasy

Happy Birthday to Little Jazz himself, Roy Eldridge, often considered a stylistic bridge between Pops & Bop. Here we find Mr.Eldridge the “mature” member of the group, even if only 6 years older than Birks. But as we know, 6 is at least doubled in Jazz years. Quasi - Boogaloo, which kicks off this album, is the most “immature” of the tracks, given the funky backbeat Mickey(the youngster) pours all over it, but immediately afterward we go right back to StandardVille, which is kind of a shame, cause it’s fun to hear older G.O.A.T.s in newer pastures. Side two hits with some heat as well, and then it’s a tip of the hat to Pops, with his theme song, tellin us indeed “where it all came from”. There’s a swipe by legendary Jazz writer Leonard Feather in the liner toward rock critics of the time, “advocates of fusion and confusion” (so great, haha), who apparently weren’t fans of basically what Pablo is *mostly* all about; mature musicians playing mature music. Of course we know it’s not the case entirely, there’re some outliers in the catalog, and that’s part of the fun. This record is a great window into how the label was received in its time, and of course a burning set by two of the greatest horn men, & three of the greatest rhythm section personnel ever. Who can complain about that? •Title: #JazzMaturity •Catalog: #pablo_2310_816 •Recorded: Tuesday, June 3rd #1975 •Released: #1978 •Personnel: - #RoyEldgridge, trumpet - #DizzyGillespie, trumpet - #OscarPeterson, piano - #RayBrown, bass - #MickeyRoker, drums •📸Photography: #PhilStern •📝Liner notes: #LeonardFeather •🖌Layout & Design: #NormanGranz & #SheldonMarks •🎚Sound Engineer: #BobSimpson •Studio: RCA Recording Studios, New York • #Vinyl #LP #Jazz #PabloJazzRecords #PabloRecords #RCARecords

Happy birthday to J.J. Johnson, who many refer to as the father of the modern trombone. Before Mr.Johnson, it was commonplace for bone players to use more of a sliding, glissando, “gutbucket” style, but J.J. soaked up the Bop innovations of Bird & Diz, developing a lightning-quick style that was revolutionary. He played with innumerable greats; from Miles, Benny Carter, Woody Herman, Count, & on this unique album, JP. He had a brilliant mind, taking a job as a blueprint inspector for Sperry Gyroscope Co. when the Korean War broke up his gig with the Oscar Pettiford band. Later on, in order to stay at home more, he began orchestrating for film & tv, and also was fascinated by new electronic innovations like MIDI. On this very unusual album, we have two masters who are able to transcend the limitations often felt by the common musician. It is a quintessential Granz experiment, and we’re the richer for it. We all know that Pass was accustomed to accompanying himself, often sounding like two guitarists, but ever heard a bone act as bassist, ringing in the changes? Only musicians as groundbreaking as these two could recontextualize their roles & pull off so well a wonderful release like this. Also worth noting, JJ was hand-picked by Granz to perform at the very first J.A.T.P in 1944 in Los Angeles, and enjoyed working with Norman for nearly both of their entire careers. •Title: #We’llBeTogetherAgain •Catalog: #pablo_2310_911 •Recorded: Oct.26, #1983 •Released: #1984 •Personnel: - #JoePass - #JJJohnson •Produced by: #NormanGranz •📸Photography: #PhilStern •📝Liner notes: #BennyGreen •🖌Layout & Design: Mr.Granz & #SheldonMarks •🎚Sound Engineer: #AndyDAddario •Studio: Group Four Studios • #Vinyl #LP #Jazz #PabloJazzRecords #PabloRecords

“The cream of that unreleased material”, is how Pablo founder Norman Granz refers to this fourth installment of Joe Pass’s landmark solo guitar series, Virtuoso. V4 represents the last of the Virtuoso vinyl releases, & the continuation of material released from the 1973 sessions, 10yrs after their recording (Virtuoso in New York (pablo_2310_979_2) dropped on CD in 2004). Material-wise, Joe’s selections vary from standards by Duke, Strayhorn, the Gershwins, and Arlen & Mercer, to more contemporary picks like the Bergmans, Legrand, Lennon & McCartney, and Pass himself. And all on acoustic, which is unique to this album. Although why it’s a Pablo LIVE album remains a mystery, to me at least, as these are all studio tracks. Virtuoso Live (pablo_2310-948-2), is an actual live CD recorded in 1990 at Vine Street Bar & Grill, in Hollywood. Norman often compared Pass to 20th century classical guitarist Andrés Segovia, in his never-ending quest to bring the same respect to Jazz musicians, that their classical counterparts enjoyed from contemporary audiences & history books alike. The sheer volume of Pass’ recordings on Pablo alone make for more than a compelling argument, (especially his solo work), that total being at least 81. •Title: #Virtusos4 •Catalog: #pablo_2640_102 •Date: November, #1973 •Personnel: - #JoePass •Produced by: #NormanGranz •📸Photography: #PhilStern •📝Liner notes: Mr.Granz •🖌Layout & Design: Mr.Granz & #SheldonMarks •🎚Sound Engineer: #DennisSands •Studio: MGM Recording Studio, Los Angeles • #Vinyl #LP #Jazz #PabloJazzRecords #PabloRecords #PabloLive

Norman Granz was a serious man, and he appreciated serious men. As affable as he was, Oscar Peterson was serious. Granz’ right-hand producer Eric Miller was very serious about his work. And when Granz met Joe Pass, he appreciated both his mastery, & serious approach to his art. Pass signed with Granz to manage his career along with OP & Ella. And when Joe got back from Australia with Benny Goodman in 1973, he got to work on Norman’s first big assignment, the Virtuoso sessions, which resulted in over 50 tracks. While V1 consisted more of classic standards, with a few exceptions, Joe chose more modern fare for Virtuoso #2, including two pieces by (very modern at the time) pianist Chick Corea, & two originals. The hipness of Joe’s take on Coltrane’s Giant Steps, even spoke to future generation Hip Hop legend, @tribecalledquestt frontman @qtiptheabstract, & producer @officialjdilla when they included a Pass lick on the 1999 track, Let’s Ride. Have a listen on Youtube to spot the well used sample (link in bio). •Title: #Virtuoso2 •Catalog: #pablo_2310_788 •Recorded: September 14 & October 26, #1976 •Released: #1977 •Personnel: - #JoePass •Produced by: #NormanGranz •📸Photography: #PhilStern •📝Liner notes: Mr.Granz •🖌Layout & Design: Mr.Granz & #SheldonMarks •🎚Sound Engineer: #GroverHelsley •Studio: RCA Studios, Los Angeles • #Vinyl #LP #Jazz #PabloJazzRecords #PabloRecords #RCARecords

Happy Birthday Ray Bryant! Mr. Bryant played with everybody important; from Diz, Miles, Pres, Bird, Blakey, and both Sonnys. He backed up Ella, Carmen, and even Aretha. Not only that, but he has seven titles in the Pablo catalog to his name. This album, a Brazilian release, has fellow Pablo stalwart, drummer Mickey Roker, as well as bassist Jimmy Rowser, on his only Pablo appearance; heavy hitters all. As Mr. Green more eloquently mentions, the song selection on this album is varied, but all three artists ably deliver in a cohesive manner that’s at the very least, real pleasant, and most certainly easily underrated. •Title: #Potpourri •Catalog: #pablo_2310_860 (also Brazil #pablo_6328_353) •Recorded: May 13 & 14, #1980 •Released: #1981 •Personnel: - #RayBryant, piano - #MickeyRoker, drums - #JimmyRowser, bass •Produced by: #NormanGranz •📸Photography: #PhilStern •📝Liner notes: #BennyGreen •🖌Layout & Design: Mr.Granz & #SheldonMarks •🎚Sound Engineer: #BobSimpson •Studio: RCA Recording Studio, New York, New York • #Vinyl #LP #Jazz #PabloJazzRecords #PabloRecords #PolygramDiscos

Just when you think you have half of the Modern Jazz Quartet with Bags & Ray, Mickey would actually go on to replace Connie Kay in the group, 15yrs after this recording. There’s even a MJQ track on this release, Blues for the Stone. Dizzy once remarked about Roker, “once he sets a groove, whatever it is, you can go to Paris and come back and it's right there. You never have to worry about it.” Not that anyone would, but it looks like someone questioned his time on the cover photo shot by Pablo stalwart, Phil Stern. To be Stern, Val Valentin, Eric Miller in those recording sessions…wow huh? Quadrant would go on to record two more albums for Pablo, both celebrations of Duke Ellington, both (mostly) recorded at the same session; January 21, 1980, at Group IV Studios in Hollywood. Now playing in hi-fi, 1959 (1961 repress). : Sometimes you come across and album and you think “Why have I NEVER seen this before?” That was the case here when one of the friendly owners of @delta_breeze_records in Sacramento pointed this out to me earlier this week. It’s a lovely album, mostly laid back tunes written, arranger and played so very well. If you’re looking for an affordable way to get your hands on some Benny Golson and Gigi Grace, look no further. All of the songs except one are written by them and they are also a part of the octet. Even though it’s called “The Greatest Trumpet of Them All,” it certainly isn’t dominated by Dizzy. Truly a well rounded octet. This album, which began recording 45yrs ago to the day, is a love letter to Brazil, from Sassie. Additionally, it is the first album she made for Pablo, AND was nominated for a Grammy. On this album, Ms. Vaughan has brought together some of Brazil’s greatest talents from the 1970’s, including Antonio Carlos Jobim (who also went by Tom), Dori Caymmi, & Milton Nascimento, who is currently on his farewell tour. (Don’t miss your last chance to see this living legend!) It’s always a treat when you come across a Pablo release like this that offers a departure from the usual fare. Vaughan had been in a period of creative stagnancy, & wanted more control over her output. Of course, who better to partner with than Norman Granz, who always granted the greatest creative freedom to his artists, because he trusted them as musicians, first & foremost. When signed with Pablo, Ms. Vaughan appears on no less than 9 releases, from homages to Duke, live recordings, & fan favorite, “How long has this been going on”, for a combined four Grammy nods. Sounds like Sassie found the right fit in the Autumn of her life. •Title: #ILoveBrazil! •Catalog: #pablo_2312_101 •Recorded: October 31, November 3, 4, 5 and &, #1977 •Released: #1979 •Personnel: - #SarahVaughan - #EdsonFrederico - #DaniloCaymmi - #MiltonNascimento - #TomJobim (Antonio Carlos) - #JoseRobertoBertrami - #SergioBarroso - #ClaudioBertrami - #Novelli - #HelioDelmiro - #NelsonAngelo - #ChicoBatera - #Ariovaldo - #MauricioEinhorn - #PauloJobim - #WilsonDasNeves •Produced by: #AloysioDeOliveira •📸Photography: •📝Liner notes: #NormanGranz •🖌Layout & Design: Mr.Granz & #SheldonMarks •🎚Sound Engineer: #MarioBruno •Studio: Studios Rio de Janeiro • #Vinyl #LP #Jazz #PabloJazzRecords #PabloRecords #PabloToday

Happy birthday to Mr. John Coltrane! There’re a lot of dates associated with this recording. Firstly, it claims to have been recorded in 1962, but some say ’63. (Some say Paris, some say Berlin). It was released by Pablo in 1979 as a Pablo Live album, & as a Musical Heritage Society co-release. Then in 1993 is re-released in the exact same format, but in affiliation with Concord (the release you see here). And then again in 2000. As the saying goes, barrels of ink have been poured out upon this period of Trane’s career, being between two pivotal stints with Miles, and his death. His explorations & progress climb & twist into the stratosphere at exponential rates during these years (basically the 60’s till his death in ’67). Every release, every few months sees the man shed his previous skin, & debut exhilarating newness. Some, including the pianist & drummer on this album, perhaps thought too exponential, er, experimental, as only bassist Jimmy Garrison stayed with Trane’s band till his death. For Pablovians, these releases are particularly special because; A) there are only five John Coltrane albums in the Pablo catalog; one being a Best-of from the other four, which are ALL from the same European tour, Afro Blue Impressions coming from this VERY SAME CONCERT. And every Coltrane record released on Pablo has the same personnel; -bassist Jimmy Garrison -pianist McCoy Tyner -and drummer Elvin Jones …all of which we can agree, are very special cats, and are not heard on any other Pablo releases. This is a solid release for your collection. •Title: #TheParisConcert •Catalog: #pablo_2308_217 •Recorded?: #1962 •Released: #1979, #1993, #2000… •Personnel: - #JohnColtrane - #McCoyTyner - #ElvinJones - #JimmyGarrison •Produced by: #NormanGranz •📸Photography: #RobertoPolillo •📝Liner notes: #EdMichel •🖌Layout & Design: #NormanGranz & #SheldonMarks#Vinyl #LP #Jazz #PabloJazzRecords #PabloRecords #PabloLive #Affiliated label

Now playing in mono, recorded in 1951, released 1957 (OG). : In honor of Charlie Parker’s birthday I’ve been listening to something unusual for Parker - Latin jazz with Afro-Cuban rhythms thrown into the mix! These recordings definitely highlight the rhythm and you don’t see the usual insane stylings of Parker but it is nonetheless still the genius of the Bird. Quick jaunt over from Switzerland to Denmark: With a rhythm section like hometown hero NHØP, & Django devote, Joe Pass the Great, the French-Italian father of the Jazz violin enjoys quite the backing for a wonderful evening in Copenhagen. The night of July 6th, 1979, (43 years ago to the day!) would actually create enough fodder for TWO fantastic Pablo releases; this, & SKOL (pablo_2308_232). The later would feature (if possible) an even more impressive personnel line up, adding OP & Mickey Roker. But it really is a nice moment here, having Grappelli play in a somewhat similar Hot Club of France setting, with two outstanding string players. Now if only we could have added Herb Ellis & Bucky Pizzarelli (Bucky, who SP would actually perform & record with JUST 9 DAYS LATER!). Grappelli, whose career had peaks & valleys for most of the first ⅔ of his life, really came into bloom in the late 70’s through the end of his life in 1997. His contributions to Jazz finally fully appreciated, he recorded constantly, being paired with musicians of all genres, young & old. •Title: #TivoliGardensCopenhagenDenmark •Catalog: #pablo_2308_220 (OJC_441) •Date: July 6th, #1979 •Personnel: - #StephaneGrappelli - #JoePass - #NielsHenningØrstedPedersen ( #NHØP) •Produced by: #NormanGranz •📸Photography: #PhilStern & #DavidRedfern •🖌Layout & Design: Mr.Granz & #SheldonMarks •🎚Sound Engineer: #StigKreutzfeldt • Remix Engineer: #DennisSands •Location: Tivoli Concert Hall, Copenhagen, Denmark •Studio: Group IV Studio, Hollywood, CA •Remastered: #PhilDeLancie, Fantasy Studios, Berkeley, CA • #Vinyl #LP #Jazz #PabloJazzRecords #PabloRecords #PabloLive #FantasyRecords

Now this album is soulful & downright funky, but you can’t be too surprised if you’re seeing Mr. Bernard Purdie on the cover, right? And to the best of my knowledge, it is unfortunately the only appearance Pretty Purdie makes on any Pablo release, which is especially maddening given that, at 81 years old, he is one of the most recorded drummers in history. As the story goes, Toots & Pretty weren’t planned to back Diz at all, but Diz’s band took a wrong flight & wound up in a different European country. Montreux festival founder Claude Dobs (whose voice you can hear at the top of the album) scrambled & this trio was the result. Norman sounds like his thoughts on the solution were in the mix too. I don’t know who was supposed to play, but getting Pretty behind Diz, & having Toots pull out his 6-string (not something he did too often), is undoubtedly a magical Montreux moment. Purdie is an absolute beast on this album, bringing such ferocity to the table for Diz & Toots, it’s utterly delicious, and the kind of backbeat offerings we don’t get to enjoy too often as Pablovians. Check out his solo on the first track, Christopher Columbus. Toots & Diz recorded another album at Montreux that year (pablo_2308_229), but with percussionist Mongo Santamaria. For an interesting contrast, throw them on back-to-back. •Title: #DizzyGillespieDigitalAtMontreux1980 •Catalog: #pablo_2308_226 ( #D2308_226) •Recorded: July 19, #1980 •Released: #1981 •Personnel: - #DizzyGillespie - #TootsThielmans - #BernardPurdie •Produced by: Mr.Gillespie •📸Photography: #PhilStern, #DarrylPitt, #AndyFreeberg •📝Liner notes: #BennyGreen •🖌Layout & Design: #NormanGranz & #SheldonMarks •🎚Sound Engineer: #DaveRichards •Editing Engineer: #ArneFrager, Spectrum Studios, Venice, California •Studio: Mountain Studios, Montreux, Switzerland • #Vinyl #LP #Jazz #PabloJazzRecords #PabloRecords #MontreuxJazzFestival #PabloLive #PabloDigital #SonyDigitalSystems

The album starts off with an incredible solo piano moment, OP flying solo in ways seldom heard, to be honest. Maybe you’ve heard how Oscar would play differently for friends, than he would for audiences. Have you heard that? This sounds like some of the recordings I’ve heard that have OP doing his real thing, and it’s really a pleasure. NHØP hops in mid song, & certainly brings that bottom back bone that we’re used to hearing with these two. It’s almost like CHOPS but Pass has been substituted for Peterson. Oscar was a big fan of Montreux, feeling that the players & audiences were all there in support of the music. That the energy, spirit, & atmosphere were among the very finest you could find in support of real Jazz playing. And here you hear that freedom in his playing, Niels too. He gets a fantastic solo turn on That’s All, that’s a beautiful exhibition. If you’re a Pablovian, then you know what these two do. And it’s fair to say that here on this release, they’re really doing it to their full abilities. A fantastic set, & a pleasure to spin in your home. Feels like you’re there in Switzerland, 1979. •Title: #OscarPetersonDigitalAtMontreux •Catalog: #pablo_2308_224 ( #D2308_224) •Recorded: July 16, #1979 •Released: #1980 •Personnel: - #OscarPeterson - #NielsHenningOrstedPedersen ( #NHØP) •Produced by: #NormanGranz •📸Photography: #PhilStern •🖌Layout & Design: Mr.Granz & #SheldonMarks •🎚Sound Engineer: #DaveRichards •Studio: Mountain Studios, Montreux, Switzerland • #Vinyl #LP #Jazz #PabloJazzRecords #PabloRecords #MontreuxJazzFestival #PabloLive #PabloDigital #SonyDigitalSystems

Montreux Jazz Festival starts today in Switzerland, and no les than 33 Pablo records were recorded at the venerated annual celebration. The festival has, over the years, expanded from a strictly Jazz spate of acts, but without a doubt, for many years, Pablo BROUGHT the Jazz to Montreux. Digital Montreux III is a very unusual album in this; it’s actually the extra material from The Perfect Match ( #pablo_2312_110, Basie band + Ella), On the Road ( #pablo_2312_112, Basie band) AND a burnin hot performance of JP & NHØP that happened to run on the shorter side, all at the Swiss festival, in July 1979. This is why the recording system & Festival take top billing; it’s a total melange. Although why it’s number III remains a mystery as there are no Digital I or II. That’s not at all to say that any of it is subpar material; it’s why Mr.Granz couldn’t abide by leaving it unreleased. That plus he was a good businessman, and it’s very likely that the cutting edge Sony Digital Recording equipment didn’t come cheap. And as always, differentiating that this was indeed digital, the album was released in the beautiful translucent shade of 🔴 •Title: #DigitalIIIAtMontreux •Catalog: #pablo_2308_223 ( #pablo_D2308_223) •Recorded: July 12, #1979 •Released: #1980 •Personnel: - #EllaFitzgerald - #CountBasie - #JoePass - #NielsHenningØrstedPedersen ( #NHØP) #CountBasieOrchestra: - #FreddieGreen - #KeterBetts - #JohnClayton - #MickeyRoker -PeteMinger  -SonnyCohn  -PaulCohen  -RaymondHarryBrown -MitchellBootieWood  -BillHughes  -MelWanzo  -DennisWilson  -CharlieFowlkes  -EricDixon  -BobbyPlater  -DannyTurner -KennyHing •Produced by: #NormanGranz •📸Photography: #PhilStern •📝Liner notes: Mr.Granz •🖌Layout & Design: Mr.Granz & #SheldonMarks •🎚Sound Engineer: #DaveRichards •Editing Engineer: #ArneFrager •Studio: Mountain Studios, Montreux, Switzerland • #Vinyl #LP #Jazz #PabloJazzRecords #PabloRecords #PabloLive #MontreuxJazzFestival #PabloDigital

Happy 89th Birthday Lalo Schifrin! Bravo to such a long and accomplished life! The seeds to this album, recorded in 1977, were planted 21yrs earlier, in 1956, when Lalo met Dizzy, & wrote for him the extended work, Gillespiana. Lalo & Dizzy continued to work with each other on & off over the years. This album is an interesting one for a number of reasons. Firstly it’s rife with fusiony funk, and as we know, Norman wasn’t a fan. But I’m sure whatever Dizzy wanted, he had green lights all the way. Secondly, it’s CHOCK FULL OF LEGENDS as sidemen. Have you SEEN this personal list below?! Just for starters; guitar phenoms Lee Ritenour(!), and Ray Parker Jr. (seven years before he was asking who you were gonna call?). Then you have Ernie Watts (who was still going by Ernest), and Oscar Brashear (who, some 16yrs ago, I can’t believe I was lucky enough to meet over lunch with Snookie Young & Gerald Wilson!!) And if that wasn’t enough, one of the most recorded percussionists of the 20th century, Paulinho da Costa…. So yeah, definitely pick this one up with you want something quality & a lil different in your Pablo collection. •Title: #FreeRide •Catalog: #pablo_2310_794 •Date: January 31, February 1 & 2, #1977 •Personnel: - #DizzyGillespie - #LaloSchifrin - #OscarBrashear - #JackHLaubach - #LewMcCreary - #JamesHorn - #ErnestWatts - #JeromeRichardson - #RayParkerJr - #LeeRitenour - #WaWaWatson ( #WahWahWatson) - #WiltonLFelder - #EdwardGreene - #PaulinhoDaCosta - #SonnyBurke -CharlesESpangler •Produced by: Mr.Schifrin •📸Photography: #PhilStern •🖌Layout & Design: #NormanGranz & #SheldonMarks •🎚Sound Engineer: #PeterGranet •Recording Consultant: #GroverHelsley •Assistant Engineer: #RalphOsborn •Studio: Wally Heider Recording Studios, Hollywood • #Vinyl #LP #Jazz #PabloJazzRecords #PabloRecords

Happy Father's Day to all Jazz-loving dads. Here’s a burning release, from who could easily be considered the father of the modern Jazz guitar; my own father’s favorite guitarist, Mr. Passalaqua, JP, Joe Pass, & his trusty rhythm section, with Ronnie Scott’s house drummer (& OP’s preferred stick man) Mr. Martin Drew, & The Viking himself, Denmark’s own, NHØP. Obviously from this lineup, the virtuosity (AND familiarity by 1982) is gonna be high & tight. The pick of tunes on this album has a nice variety of seldom represented numbers, which is always refreshing when Standards bear more than their weight over the years. Lush Life is a standout here, as it was when Joe backed up Ella nine years earlier, when they recorded the track for Take Love Easy (pablo_2310_702), Pablo’s second release. And lest you think Night and Day is old hat, these cats are off to the races at a cutting Bop tempo, with Joe just flying at super sonic speeds AND creative heights. Mastery all over this album. Enjoy along with a cold frosty one, dear dads, those who love their dads, and those who miss their dads. (btw, wonder what the heck Eximious means? Even though it's the Basie Big Band, this album has a real intimate feel. Joe Turner & Cleanhead take turns sharing their woes (or shoutin the Blues, as some say), & it's super down home in feel. Norman was trying to convey what it was like "years ago", when a Sunday dances like this, would go on alllll dayyy long throughout the United States. It's always nice to hear Granz' thoughts on a particular release, the ones he was most proud to present to the public, & to the ages. Alexander appeared on no less than 8 Pablo recordings, heading up two of his own; this & Monty Alexander in Tokyo (pablo_2310_826). He’s a true Pablo recording titan. This album is loaded with hard swinging, plus incredible West Indian rhythmic influences & homages that only could be organized & pulled off brilliantly by the man himself. He put together TOP musicians from the States & the Caribbean, and the alchemy is fiery. Don’t sleep on this standout Pablo release. •Title: #Jamento •Catalog: #pablo_2310_826 •Date: June 15 & 16, #1978 •Personnel: - #MontyAlexander - #ErnestRanglin - #AndySimpkins - #LarryMcDonald - #RogerBethelmy - #DuffyJackson - #VinceCharles •Produced by: Mr.Alexander •📸Photography: #PhilStern •📝Liner notes: Mr.Alexander •🖌Layout & Design: #NormanGranz / #SheldonMarks •🎚Sound Engineer: #ValValentine •Studio: Group IV Recording Studios, Hollywood, California • #Vinyl #LP #Jazz #PabloJazzRecords #PabloRecords

The third & final Pablo solo album for Paulinho d Costa, is a real funky, latin, swingin mixed bag, LOADED with A+ talent, from Abraham Laboriel, Ernie Watts, and even George Duke on the Mini Moog! Happy Birthday to the heaviest hittin stand up bassist of the 70's & 80's, The Viking himself, Denmark’s own Niels Henning Ørsted Pedersen. Recorded in 1979 at the Northsea Jazz Festival at the Hague, in Holland, Northsea Nights is essentially the live sequel to CHOPS (pablo_2310_830). Hard to find two monsters as monsterous as Pass & NHØP, and especially together here, by this point they are an extremely well-oiled machine. They duck, bob, weave, fly, & back each other up seamlessly. It's truly a feat of mastery. This album is a Pablo essential, especially for any student of Jazz guitar or bass, or just simply fans of these two, &/or killer straight ahead. •Title: #NorthseaNights •Catalog: #pablo_2308_221 •Recorded: July, #1979 •Released: #1980 •Personnel: - #JoePass - #NielsHenningØrstedPedersen ( #NHØP) •Produced by: #NormanGranz •📝Liner notes: Mr.Granz •🖌Layout & Design: #TimBraaksma / #SheldonMarks •Studio: The Northsea Jazz Festival, The Hague, Holland. • #Vinyl #LP #Jazz #PabloJazzRecords #PabloRecords #PabloLive

A special happy birthday one of the main contributor to the Pablo creative legacy; artist, graphic designer, & layout artist, Mr. Sheldon Marks, who along with legendary photographer Phil Stern, helped Norman Granz create what we Pablovians surely agree, is a distinct cover design, easily spotted by a mere glance into a record bin, or IG post. Far too little information is available about Mr. Marks, so any leads would be greatly appreciated. We hope he is alive & well today. _ At least in part, what allowed Granz to make his greatest contributions to the legacy of Jazz, was his excitement in recording excellent music, regardless of its commercial appeal. It simply needed to be recorded for the ages, for future generations; for you & me. _ When musical director of the Machito orchestra, Mario Bauza, contacted Norman about recording this album, he was all green lights. And in his customary way, allowed the artists to do what they do best; make the music as great as possible. _ One could say that every Pablo release is a time capsule of sorts, & that would be fair, but these one-off ventures into areas & artists that Granz didn’t regularly record, are particularly interesting. Machito only had two releases on Pablo, & this was the only new one. The second, which would come out two years later in 1978 (pablo_2625_712) was a re-release from his New York shows in 1948 & 1949. _ Of particular artistic note is the use of synth, something novel in a Latin Jazz big band at the time. And it cannot be left unsaid, that Dizzy is funky & fluid as hell. A real stand out performance in his contributions to the Pablo catalog. •Title: #AfroCubanJazzMoods •Catalog: #pablo_2310_771 •Recorded: June 4&5, 1975 •Released: 1976 •Personnel: - #DizzyGillespie - #Machito - #ChicoOFarrill -many, many others •Produced by: #ArturoOFarrill & #MarioBauza •📸Photography: #PhilStern •📝Liner notes: Chico O’Farrill •🖌Layout & Design: #NormanGranz & #SheldonMarks •Studio: Generation Studios, New York • #Vinyl #LP #Jazz #PabloJazzRecords #PabloRecords #RCARecords

Here we are, the last day of The Pablo World Tour, AND April, which is Jazz Appreciation Month. Hopefully you’ve enjoyed the journey, the story, & the top shelf Jazz. _ We find ourselves back where we started, in London, England, a town the ever resourceful Norman Granz actually had a difficult time booking for many years, due to musician’s unions & red tape. But by the time he established Pablo, things had opened up, as evidenced by the the copious amount of recordings upon the Kingdom’s home shores. _ Luigi Paulino Alfredo Francesco Antonio Balassoni runs a real down-home production. Every tune on this release is written by him or a member of his band; how great is that? It shows that a man who studied at the University of Ellington, decades later, wasn’t leaning on his laurels, by putting out an album of thread-bare standards. Respect✊ _ Another particularly noteworthy moment is the salutè to the venerated Jazz disc jockeys Freddy Woodruff, & (the mention of a VERY influential Southern California voice,) the sorely missed & never forgotten, Chuck Niles, aka Bebop Charlie, who is certainly the last of the iconic Jazz radio personalities. _ If you’re a fan of Mr.Niles, & you would like to hear Mr.Bellson’s tribute to him, Niles Blues, it can be found on Pablo release Sunshine Rock (2310_813), which will be featured in an upcoming post. _ •Title: #TheLondonGig •Catalog: #pablo_2310_880 •Recorded: Nov.1st #1982 •Released: #1983 •Personnel: - #LouieBellson - #FrankStrazzeri - #GeorgeDuvivier - #JohnEckert - #GregRuvolo - #WaltJohnason - #BrianOFlaherty - #DaveKatz - #DanaHughes - #ClintonSharman - #HaleRood - #DonMikkelsen - #TedNash - #KenHitchcock -MattCatingub -WilliamSantosMurray -JoeSudler •Produced by: #AlanFreeman •Executive Producer: #PeterBrightman •📸Photography: #PhilStern •📝Liner notes: Mr.Bellson •🖌Layout & Design: #NormanGranz & #SheldonMarks •🎚Sound Engineer: #RayPrickett & #DaveFord •Studio: PRT Studios, London #Jazz #PabloJazzRecords #PabloRecords #ChuckNiles #BebopCharlie

Hope you’re enjoying Jazz Appreciation Month by filling up on the good stuff. The next stop on our Pablo World Tour is London, England; where 40 years ago to the day(!), this very album was recorded live. _ The second most recorded Jazz composer behind Duke, Monk had just passed on February 17th, 10 weeks prior, and his compatriots wanted to honor his genius & influence. This powerhouse quartet had been playing the famous Ronnie Scott’s when Norman saw an opportunity to record. Ray & Bags made it happen, producing the release. _ Not only is the honoring of fellow Jazz statesmen significant, but how bout this combo? Whew, heavy hitters to be sure. Out of the four, only Mr.Alexander is still with us, and he’s touring all the time. When he comes to your neck of the woods, you would be adding a beautiful experience to your life, were you to see him live. He brings with him the richness of all the giants he’s made music with, over a lifetime of playing. You’ll be glad you did. •Title: #MemoriesOfTheloniousSphereMonk •Catalog: #pablo_2308_235 •Date: April 28, #1982 •Personnel: - #MiltJackson, vibes - #RayBrown, bass - #MontyAlexander, organ & piano - #MickeyRoker, drums •Produced by: Mr.Brown & Mr.Jackson •📸Photography: #PhilStern •📝Liner notes: #NormanGranz •🖌Layout & Design: Mr.Granz & #SheldonMarks •🎚Sound Engineer: #BasingStreetStudios •Studio: RonnieScotts, London, England • #Vinyl #LP #Jazz #PabloJazzRecords #PabloRecords #PabloLive

What you’re beholding now is the very last recording of piano phenom, the legendary Mary Lou Williams. Ms.Williams was one of the first women to be successful in Jazz. She was a mentor to many of our favorite cats including Bird, Diz, & Monk. She composed & arranged hundreds of tunes, & was highly regarded by Duke, Goodman, Pops, & countless others. _ Ms.Williams lead a robust life, & the last half of which was spent focused on helping others. This third, and final recording for Pablo, a solo recital, was made at the Montreux Jazz Festival, in 1978, at the suggestion & cajoling of Norman Granz. The first cut on the album is really something special, because it is a medley of pieces that in a historical sense, delineate the story of Jazz, & her place within it, which is to say, the role she had in creating it. What a fitting way to end her recording life. Enjoy this stunning album, a testament to an under-heralded Jazz hero, as we begin our descent, our final week of Jazz Appreciation Month, and the Pablo World Tour. Next stop: France! •Title: #MaryLouWilliamsSoloRecital •Catalog: #pablo_2308_218 •Recorded: July 16, #1978 •Released #1979 •Personnel: - #MaryLouWilliams •Produced by: Ms.Williams •📸Photography: #PhilStern •📝Liner notes: #NatHentoff •🖌Layout & Design: #NormanGranz & #SheldonMarks •Studio: #MountainRecordingStudios#Vinyl #LP #Jazz #StraightAhead #PabloJazzRecords #PabloRecords #MontreuxJazzFestival #PabloLive

Next stop on the Jazz Appreciation Month Pablo World Tour, is Helsinki, Finland, just a stone’s throw from where Mr. Peterson played in Tallin, Estonia just last week! Hey, who booked this tour? We coulda saved a lot of money on airfare! _ As told to me by Mr. Sandoval himself, he just happened to be in Helsinki, at the same time as his life long idol. When he heard Dizzy was in town too, he simply had to make something happen. This record is a result of his tenacity & pluck, and probably lots of coffee, as it was squeezed in between the cracks of their busy schedule, recording the whole album in one overnight session. _ Of the musicians on this album, only Arturo & bassist Pekka Sarmento are still with us, the former of which constantly performs. Should you have the opportunity, go see Mr.Sandoval’s show, he carries Dizzy with him always. •Title: #ToFinlandStation •Catalog: #pablo_2310_889 •Date: September 9, #1982 •Personnel: - #DizzyGillespie, trumpet, Jew’s Harp - #ArturoSandoval, trumpet - #EskoLinnavalli, piano - #PekkaSarmanto, bass - #EskoRosnell, drums •Produced by: Mr.Gillespie •📸Photography: #TimoKrves •📝Liner notes: #NormanGranz •🖌Layout & Design: Mr.Granz & #SheldonMarks •Studio: #Takomontie Studios, Helsinki, Finland • #Vinyl #LP #Jazz #PabloJazzRecords #PabloRecords #JazzAppreciationMonth

Happy Harmonica Day! And who better with whom to ring it in, than the maestro of the mouth organ, Toots Thielemans, who was born 11 days from now, April 29th, 1922! _ We continue our celebration of Jazz Appreciation Month with our Pablo World Tour. Today we're in the Netherlands at the Northsea Jazz Festival! _ As the story goes, Toots, Joe Pass & NHØP had just played (& recorded, literally the same day) a set with Oscar Peterson at Northsea (pablo_2620_115), and Pass was supposed to play a solo set (as he had established himself over the past seven years as a solo… Virtuoso;). _ But Norman suggested he grab Toots & Niels, and have an Oscar-less session. Seems they still had gas in the tank, so why not? Without OP, Toots could really spread out, and with that rhythm section, well, you could blast off to Mars. Toots pulls all the tricks out of his bag by also whistling, & even, with humble deference to Joe, playing guitar on the Duke track, The Mooche, honoring his royalty. _ •Title: #LiveInTheNetherlands •Catalog: #pablo_2308_233 •Recorded July 13, #1980, #NorthseaJazzFestival, The Hague, Holland, by Wisseloord Studios. •Released #1982 •Personnel: - #TootsThielemans, harmonica, guitar, & whistle - #JoePass, guitar - #NielsHenningOrstedPedersen, bass •Produced by: #NormanGranz •📸Photography: #PhilStern •📝Liner notes: Mr.Granz •🖌Layout & Design: Mr.Granz & #SheldonMarks •🎚Sound Engineer: #DennisSands, Group IV Studios, Hollywood, CA • #Vinyl #LP #Jazz #PabloJazzRecords #PabloRecords #PabloLive

Now playing in high fidelity, 1957. : I recently discovered Barbara Carroll and I’m wondering why she doesn’t get more press. It’s up for debate if it was her or Mary Lou Williams to be the first female pianist to enter the bop scene. This is a great album covering some iconic Gershwin tunes. Carroll also signs on two of them and her voice is lovely. I’m a huge Audrey Hepburn fan so it’s an added bonus that she’s on the cover. Happy birthday to The Devine One, Ms. Sarah Vaughan, born this day in 1924, in Newark, New Jersey. _ Sassie (as she often spelled her own moniker), was frustrated by her representation, and lack of artistic control over her own career. In a season of Brazil mania, on her own dime she recorded an album, but had no label to release it…enter Norman Granz, who only ever gave unprecedented creative control to his artists, and who released great albums regardless of commercial appeal. And even though Granz hated everything Steven Sondheim ever wrote, he allowed Vaughan to release this album with the titular track as such, as it had become a signature song for her. _ Thus began an active season of recording for Sarah & Norman, starting with her Brazil project (I Love Brazil, pablo2312_101). Ms. Vaughan appeared or headed up no less than nine albums for Pablo, including How Long Has This Been Going On? (Pablo2310_821), which, backed by the Oscar Peterson, Joe Pass, Ray Brown, & Louis Bellson rhythm section, secured them a Grammy nomination. •Title: #SendInTheClowns •Catalog: #pablo_2312_130 •Date: February 16, 18, & May 16, 1981 •Personnel: - #SarahVaughan - #SamNestico, arranged & conducted -Allyn Ferguson, arranged - #GeorgeGaffney, piano - #FreddieGreen, guitar - #AndySimpkins, bass -HaroldJones, drums •Trumpets: - #SonnyCohn - #FrankSzabo - #WillieCook - #BobSummers -Dale Carley •Trombones - #MitchellBootyWood - #BillHughes - #DennisWilson -Grover Mitchell •Saxophones - #KennyHing - #EricDixon - #BobbyPlater - #DannyTurner -Johnny Williams •Produced by: #NormanGranz •📸Photography: #TomCopi •📝Liner notes: #DanMorgenstern •🖌Layout & Design: Mr.Granz & #SheldonMarks •🎚Sound Engineer: #DennisSands & #GreggOrloff •Studio: Group IV Studios, Hollywood, Ca • #Vinyl #LP #Jazz #PabloJazzRecords #PabloRecords

Next stop on the Pablo World Tour 𝘭𝘰𝘰𝘬𝘴 like Africa, (and for the sake of diversifying the locales, it's fun to include it), but the recordings were actually made whilst on European tour in Stockholm, Sweden, & Berlin, Germany, in the Winter of 1963, 3 ½ years before Trane would unfortunately pass at age 40. Mr.Granz mentions that recordings were made throughout the tour, but he felt these were the best (wouldn't you like to be the judge yourself, and have a listen to the other tour dates?) A remarkable album, capturing this quartet just before they were to launch into even braver stratospheres. _ •Title: #AfroBlueImpressions •Catalog: #pablo_2620_101 •Date: Recorded on October 22, 1963. One more stop in Japan on our Pablo World Tour! _ Norman Granz makes sure to add his sentiments to Benny Green’s, with a short producer’s note on the back of this 3-album boxset, a 30th anniversary concert commemorating the 1953, first J.A.T.P. concert in Japan. _ This 1986 release would come out just before the sale of Pablo to Fantasy Records in ’87, and the tone Mr.Granz strikes tells you that he realizes his time, his era, his friends, & his Jazz are soon history. And it’s breaking his heart. _ Mr. Green, in his usual way, and with his singular flair, extolls the virtues of Jockjaw, highlights the dueling nature of a J.A.T.P. show, and lays palm fronds down at the feet of Oscar, Ella, & the rhythm section. _ A couple of unique moments include; the under-heralded pianist Paul Smith accompanying Ella on Manteca, a lovely ballad section especially treasured by Granz & Peterson, and if you’ve been following along, yet another piece of Oscar’s AFRICA puzzle, the poignant composition, PEACE (AFRICA never performed in it’s entirety in OP's lifetime). _ As Oscar said, "Those solos should be in a time capsule for the future to listen to, because there isn't going to be any more like that again!" It's true, there aren't, but thankfully to Norman Granz, we hold the time capsule in our hands today. •Title: #ReturnToHappiness •Catalog: #pablo_2620_117 •Date: #1983 •Personnel: - #OscarPeterson - #JoePass - #NielsHenningOrstedPedersen - #LouisBellson - #ZootSims - #EddieLockjawDavis - #HarrySweetsEdison - #ClarkTerry - #JJJohnson - #AlGrey - #MartinDrew - #EllaFitzgerald - #PaulSmith - #KeterBetts - #BobbyDurham •Produced by: #NormanGranz •📸Photography: #PhilStern •📝Liner notes: Mr.Granz & #BennyGreen •🖌Layout & Design: Mr. Granz & #SheldonMarks •🎚Engineer: (see slide 2 for credits in Japanese) •Studio: Tokyo Yoyogi National Stadium • #Vinyl #LP#Jazz #StraightAhead#PabloJazzRecords #PabloRecords #PabloLive •Distributed by #FantastyRecords
