Alto Saxophonist/Instructor @MarcFendel has been a staple of the Seattle music community for twenty years. His passion for performance and music education has taken him all over the world as a professional musician and bandleader. He is also a highly sought after instructor locally. Fendel earned a full scholarship to Berklee College of Music 1990-1995 where he studied with #JoeViola and #GeorgeGarzone and received degrees in both Performance and Music Education. Fendel moved to Seattle in 1995 and cofounded the Seattle Jazz group Bebop & Destruction 1994-2006. The band produced five CDs, and currently retains the longest running Jazz jam session in Seattle at over twenty years. In 2003 Fendel founded Seattle group Swampdweller which is a cross genre party band designed to get people on the dance floor. Swampdweller has three titles to their catalog and continues to mesmerize audiences each year at regional festivals and clubs. As an educator Fendel taught Jazz Studies, ensembles, and private lessons at the Seattle Drum School of Music for twelve years. In 2007 he opened and managed the Seattle Drum School Georgetown Branch until 2012. Following his tenure there, as a result of a successful Kickstarter campaign for a camera, Fendel produced over 600 music lessons for his YouTube channel Music Education For All. The channel has received notoriety with nearly 2,000,000 views and 12,000 dedicated subscribers. musiceducationforall.com After years of living in Seattle Fendel also enjoys backpacking, skiing, and long distance hiking. In the summer of 2012 Fendel walked 2660 miles on the Pacific Crest Trail stretching from Mexico to Canada. He composed dozens of songs, and developed a line drawing style taken from his photography. Summer 2015 Fendel hiked 1,200 miles on the the The Pacific Northwest Trail from Glacier National Park to Olympic National Park on the Pacific Ocean. Thrift store find. Did you know about this? I did not. Apparently Richard and Pat and administration knew how to throw a shindig. Awesome listen through and through with fresh new arrangements of all of Duke's classics (by an unknown arranger, sounds like Gerry Mulligan to me and he takes credit for the off the wall arrangement of "Prelude to a Kiss"). Clark Terry holds no prisoners, Paul Desmond in top form, Jim Hall sounds the tiniest bit reserved, Gerry Mulligan killin' it of course, Louis Bellson gets one solo in "Caravan" and does not disappoint (it's incredible), Hank Jones and when you hear giant block chords Dave Brubeck; all topped off by Duke's improvised tribute to the first lady. #今日のレコード #2024年5月第2週入荷 メル・ルイスのオーケストラ（かつてのサド＝メル・オーケストラ）が、常箱のヴィレッジ・ヴァンガードを舞台に、ボブ・ブルックマイヤーの作編曲をライブ演奏した’80年録音。実は買い直し盤です（以前持ってた個体はどうしても状態が許せなかった。今回の個体もシュリンク剥がす際にジャケの印刷まで持ってかれた形跡があってちょっと微妙ですけど）。おそらく、今で言う「ラージアンサンブル」の先駆けとなったアルバムではないでしょうか。旧サド＝メル楽団だし。ボブ・ブルックマイヤーだし。ピアノはジム・マクニーリーだし。なんならこのまま狭間美帆さんにつながるライン。で、中古盤市場では捨て値で転がってるアルバムですけど（とは言ってもそもそもあまり見かけない）、結構すごいのでぜひ聴いてみてほしいです。サブスクにも入ってますし。なんなら冒頭の「Ding Dong Ding」だけでいいので。色とりどりにきらめく和音の奔流と、並のボリューム調節では到底制御不可能な巨大すぎるダイナミックレンジ（いちばん小さな音の演奏を聴き取れるボリュームに設定すると、クレッシェンドしきった音量では耳が悲鳴を上げる）。ディック・オーツの見事にダンモしてるソロと、ジム・マクニーリーのダンモをすべて捨てたソロ。いわゆる「ビッグバンド」のマナーとはあまりにかけ離れた音楽。なんなら「ローマの松」の方が似てるんじゃないかってくらい。とにかくこの1曲だけでも。ついでに言えばフィーチャード・ソロイストとしてクラーク・テリーとボブ・ブルックマイヤー両氏が登場するB面もなかなかのものです。いつもの艶笑おちゃらけ路線を封印したクラーク・テリーさんがラッパの鬼と化しています。 #mellewis #bobbrookmeyer #clarkterry

Enjoying Sunday with an old favorite that i've recently upgraded and it's been on rotation ever since. Color Changes is a fantastic 1961 album by Clark Terry, in an octet set up, arranged by Yusef Lateef, Al Cohn and Budd Johnson. Terry is joined by a stellar personnel, with Yusef Lateef on tenor sax, flute, oboe and English horn, Seldon Powell on tenor sax and flute, Jimmy Knepper on trombone, Julius Watkins on French horn, Tommy Flanagan on piano, Joe Benjamin on bass, Ed Shaughnessy on drums, plus Budd Johnson is on piano on my favorite track Nahstye Blues. Nahstye Blues was the reason i went after this album years ago, a dramatically arranged and played Ellingtonesque minor blues tune that keeps on impressing me through the years, and each time i play it to someone without announcing it, i get the reaction - wow what is this tune? Yusef Lateef plays a key role on this track and overall on the album, infusing it with his oriental sounds. He is also the main soloist besides Clark Terry on most tracks, with all of the other players with a solo here and there, taking their own parts in producing this special vibe that this great album carries along from start to finish. Duke Ellington And His Orchestra – Newport 1958. I came across this jam recently, it was priced nice at 12 bucks. It looked to be an OG pressing from Columbia Records from 1958 with the beloved six eye label. The record is just in phenomenal shape for being 66 years old! Of course Duke Ellington set the jazz world on fire with his 1956 appearance at Newport with a blazing set that still scorches today. Every jazz fan needs to own that album. Here we have a 1958 performance with all the killer Orchestra players you’d expect…Johnny Hodges, Paul Gonsalves, Jimmy Hamilton, Clark Terry, Ray Nance etc…then you add in guest sax player Gerry Mulligan. Apparently this is a studio recording of the same set of tunes they played at Newport with crowd noise dubbed in. The Evergreen High School Jazz-Rock Ensemble - Live At The Wichita Jazz Festival (197X) I usually try not to buy school band LPs with more well known special guests as I feel it sometimes retracts from what the students are trying to do. Clark Terry is one of the names that pop up far too often in this space, usually an automatic avoid for me. Not that I don't like Terry, I just don't expect any deep cuts with him involved. Took a chance with this as I had been trying to get my foot into Evergreen High School records. They are mostly overlooked so a lot of them aren't in the database. If they are, rarely do they show up for sale. Turned out to be a decent purchase. Starts off with a lively rendition of Chuck Mangione's Land Of Make Believe. The sound crew really let this one down as our vocalist for the evening, a young Diana Reeves, is all but drowned out. What can be heard of her however, is a more than worthy substitute for Esther Satterfield. Even in the midst of the swelling horns, the strength of her voice can be felt. Surely it left the entirety of that audience in awe that night. Miss Nancy Fax handles her Soprano sax solo with major finesse. The second side is an original composition by director Bob Montgomery. The 3 part Fantasy Suite is a trip through of bop, blues, and of course Jazz Rock. Part 3 is the stand out for me. The sax section plays in unison on this arrangement, in a whirlwind of furious, fast paced action. Terry is the only soloist on this side, which I'm willing to overlook. No doubt he's in top form, but for me I always prefer to hear from the students. Still it's a big finish to cap this one off. #今日のレコード #2024年4月第4週入荷 クラーク・テリーの、えーと、オリジナルでは’66年の作品。かつて『Mumbles』という名前で《Mainstream》レーベルからリリースされた作品の、タイトルとジャケを変えての再発盤になります（リリース元は同じ）。この再発盤自体のリリース年は不明。ただ、レーベルのロゴマークが例のライオン印になってますので、会社の芸風が変わってからの再発であることは間違いないです。しかしこのタイトルすごいな。『Angyumaluma Bongliddleany Nannyany Awhan Yi!』って数あるジャズレコの中でもトップクラスの意味不明さではなかろうか。で、内容ですが、例によってというか、お得意の悪ふざけ艶笑路線の1枚ですね。彼に好きなようにやらせるとこうなっちゃうよ、という一例。ただ「いそしぎ」とか実にいい演奏が入ってるから侮れないところもあるんですよねー。今回の個体は「メインストリームあるある」の劣悪盤質ビニ焼けザーザー盤なのでその点はなかなか手ごわいところです。 #clarkterry

Don’t let the title fool you - it’s not a big band in the traditional sense. The opening track might have you thinking it’s all Johnny, but keep listening because everyone gets highlighted. And it is good stuff - solid soul jazz. Famed Jazz trumpeter Clark Terry served his country in the U.S. Navy from 1942-1945. Terry joined the Navy after President Franklin Delano Roosevelt authorized recruitment of 5,000 musicians during WWII. After the war, the first Black musician to join the Tonight Show Orchestra continued to play music, performing with some of America's best known Jazz musicians, including #WoodlawnConnection Duke Ellington. “One time Monk came down to the – to Birdland and said, “Man, see, I’m making a record tomorrow, and I want you to record with me.” So I said, “Okay.” He said, “We’ll talk about the date after the gig.” So we finished the job like 4 o’clock in the morning at Birdland, which we usually did, and I jumped into a cab and went with him uptown. It turned out it was Nica’s [Baronness Panonica de Konigswater] apartment, up Central Park West. I think it’s the same place where Bird passed. We went up, and he walked in. First thing he did was – in the winter. Fireplace was there –first thing he did was throw something on the fire, and it turned orange. Then he sat there a little while, just looking at it. He threw something else in, and it turned red. Then he – about a half hour later he threw something. It turned green. It went about 7 or 8 different colors with different stuff he would throw in there, and he’d sit there, nah nah nah, doing his sit-down dance. We never discussed what was going to be done on the record date. Then finally I had peeked out the window, and it was [?]. I said, “Hey chief, if you’re going to do this date today, I got to go home back to Queens and turn around and come back.” “Yeah, okay, man. See you at the date. Bye.” Never did discuss the date. But he was a character, a loveable character and very, very creative.
