The building as billboard: the brief to R Stark Wilkinson when he was drawing up the Lambeth Doulton works was clearly to include as many of the company’s architectural products in the facade as possible, and then add a few more. For many years, Doulton concentrated on the heavy trade: with London’s population doubling between 1800 and 1840, the demand for clay drainage pipes (which replaced the leaky old brick gullies the Georgians had relied upon) was immense. By the 1860s, Doulton was sufficiently confident - and commercially acute - to move into finer ware, and the stage was set for Lambeth Faience, an artistic stoneware line that saw ceramic craftsmen and women creating unique studio pieces. This was a product that chimed with the contemporary Aesthetic Movement (Morris, Whistler etc), and Doulton was on to another winner. Architectural ceramics also boomed through the rest of C19, as Leicester’s Turkey Café (pic George Terezakis) and Glasgow’s extraordinary Doulton Fountain (Wikipedia Commons) illustrate. Sir Henry Doulton died in 1897, and the company ceased to be a vehicle for one man’s broad vision. Although Royal Doulton today tends to be associated with mid-range crockery and those kitsch figurines, its history and legacy are something else all together. #doultonfactory #doultonlambeth #doultonlambethstoneware #lambethware #doultonstoneware #henrydoulton #doultonfountain #georgetinworth #victorianarchitecture #victorianpottery #victorianfactory #tympanum

William Symington made his fortune supplying the Army with pea soup in the Crimean War. His business was doing so well that he built a large new factory on Springfield Street, Market Harborough at the start of the 1880s. This has been converted to flats as The Old Coffee Mill, but some pleasing details like this remain. #symingtonssoup #theoldcoffeemill #springfieldstreet #marketharborough #leicestershire #peasoup #soup #crimeanwar #victorianfactory #victorianarchitecture #19thcenturyarchitecture #1880s

Update - sold. This assemblage necklace has lots of exciting artefacts including the rose quartz point that I capped with a broken top from a Victorian vanity tool and that wonderful 36 copper token. It's a factory staff clock check token made around 1880 - 1920 by William Maberley Llewellin (1849-1930) in Bristol, England. They were designed to be fed into a clockwork device that contained a large drum divided into segments driven round by the clock (swipe to see a blueprint). As each worker arrived, they would put their own token into the machine and it would drop down a chute into the drum segment currently underneath it. The timekeeper would then remove the drum and record which workers were in each segment (often representing ten or fifteen minutes). They would then put the token back on the board where it was kept. Workers would repeat the process when they left for the day, ‘clocking off’. I wonder what the factory that used this token made and whether the owner was a tardy employee or not! I saw this little former flax mill today on a walk with the pups. It is tucked away on East Road in Egremont like a little fairytale cottage. I am of course romanticising the mill, which would be a lot less Disney and a lot more Dickensian. The mill would process raw flax plant and turn them into useful yarn ready to use in the linen industry. This is the second building just like this in Egremont that I know of, there are perhaps more. Its twin is on the little lane leading off Main Street. The top room would have been storage and the lower part of the building the spinning machines and other contraptions to produce the flax. I often think about the number of locals even a small place like this would have employed. A lifeline to so many. #mill #flaxmill #employment #dickensian #charlesdickens #fairytale #flaxseed #flax #victorian #victorianfactory

The old factory chimney: there aren’t many of these left in London now, but there’s a mighty brick stack on the Highgate Road that Blaster Bates never got his hands on. This is the Maple Building, part of a run of manufacturing and warehousing facilities up the west side of the road, partly adapted for other commercial uses, and partly - surprise! - converted into new apartments. Maples was, of course, one of Britain’s pre-eminent furniture manufacturers and retailers, operating from vast premises on Tottenham Court Road, and furnishing everything from George V’s various homes to the Criterion Theatre to Cunard liners, as well as tens of thousands of suburban semis. Maples was founded in 1841, and by the 1870s boasted it was the “largest” and “most convenient” furnishing store in the world. The Maple family became seriously rich, and aside, from the usual dodgy business practices, country estates and racehorses, also funded the setting up of what became University College Hospital. 75% of Maples’ TCR space was destroyed in WW2 bombing, and they were never really the same again. From 1980 the firm was repeatedly bought and sold until they went into administration in 1997, with the name bought by Allders. The final iteration of their headquarters, designed by Colonel Seifert, still survives on the corner of TCR and Grafton Way. A couple of weekends ago we went to @nationaltrust Quarry Bank. @ntquarrybank I don’t think I’ve ever been to a @nationaltrust place that still has everything running like here. Definitely like stepping back in time! Quarry Bank Mill (also known as Styal Mill) in Styal, Cheshire, England, is one of the best preserved textile factories of the Industrial Revolution. Built in 1784, the cotton mill is recorded in the National Heritage List for England as a designated Grade II* listed building.Quarry Bank Mill was established by Samuel Greg, and was notable for innovations both in machinery and also in its approach to labour relations, the latter largely as a result of the work of Greg's wife, Hannah Lightbody. The family took a somewhat paternalistic attitude toward the workers, providing medical care for all and limited education to the children, but all laboured roughly 72 hours per week until 1847 when a new law shortened the hours. . . #nationaltrust #nationaltrustquarrybank #victorian #victorianfactory #victorianmill #watermill #steammill #cheshire #quarrybank #worthavisit #1800s #cottontrade

Taylor and Challen Factory. I poked the phone through a gap in the railway fence to get this. Taylor and Challen were lathe and press makers that moved to these premises on Constitution Hill in the Jewellery Qtr in 1865. They moved out in the early 1970s and the building remains to this day. It's amazing to see how well this old factory building has been preserved. #taylorandchallen #taylorandchallenbirmingham #lathes #presses #birmingham #metalwork #factory #victorianfactory #industrialarchitecture #industrialrevolution #victorianarchitecture

‘Sheffield Gothic’, directly inspired by Grant Wood’s ‘American Gothic’, examines how the past intersects with the present. Behind the self-portrait of the artist and his wife Jane, is a view of Sheffield's Kelham Island. A buzzing cultural spot, Kelham is known for its old industrial buildings that once housed steel works. "Our fathers worked in the steelworks of Sheffield and Rotherham and came home smelling of fire, iron and oil. The sweat of their labour built the things we take for granted. Through their aches and pains they filled our plates and we took that for granted. But nothing lasts forever and that life has gone. Now we sit and marvel at the exposed interior brick walls of repurposed structures that once echoed with the deafening noise of production. These have become the spaces where we wait for our lattes and French pastries that we now take for granted." - Pete McKee . . . . . . . . #petemckee #petemckeeart #instaart #art #sheffield #steelcity #sheffieldcity #kelham #kelhamisland #industrial #industrialbuilding #industrialbuildings #painting #emulsiononboard #suit #checksuit #cravat #coffee #croissant #steelworks #steelindustry #choker #americangothic #grantwood #realism #selfportrait #artistportrait #sheffieldnightlife #victorianfactory #oldfactory

Monday McKee This week: ‘Sheffield Gothic’ was first displayed in 2020 for Pete's 'Eight New Paintings' exhibition and was the first self-portrait to be released by the artist. Although Pete has channelled himself through some of his characters, before this work he never directly portrayed himself. Jane, his wife and muse, stands next to him. The composition and the title was inspired by Grant Wood’s iconic 1930 painting ‘American Gothic’. In the background is Kelham Island, an area of Sheffield full of industrial buildings, many of which have been repurposed to hold bars, cafes and restaurants. This is symbolised by the pastry and coffee cup. The painting represents nostalgia for the past and the inevitable changes that none of us can avoid, expressed perfectly in the artist’s poetic accompanying text. "Our fathers worked in the steelworks of Sheffield and Rotherham and came home smelling of fire, iron and oil. The sweat of their labour built the things we take for granted. Through their aches and pains they filled our plates and we took that for granted. But nothing lasts forever and that life has gone. This quaint little house (along with one whole street of cottages) was once built for the flax workers in the 19th C. The flax processing factory was on this row and the cottages were built right next to it. A lot of employers did this, tying in the houses to their place of work. The factory owner would have his workforce very close and could pay less as they offered a house with the job. From the workers’ point of view, it was a double edged sword; they would@not only get a new job but also a home for them and their family, however, if they lose their job or become too sick to work, they also lose that home. When the employee died, it was not uncommon for the widow and their children were evicted from their home, not unlike some tragic plot from a Dickens’ novel. #flax #flaxseed #factory #cottage #oldcottage #factoryworker #workerscottage #19thcentury #victorianterrace #victorianhouse #victorian #victorianfactory #dickens #charlesdickens #industrialrevolution

The largest footwear factory in the world when it was completed: The Wheat Sheaf Works, Knighton Fields Road, Leicester. This building was the Co-op Boot and Shoe Factory. It was built in 1891 for the Co-operative Wholesale Society. When it was built it was surrounded by the green pastures of Knighton Fields - the terraced houses on the now surrounding streets followed shortly after, to house workers for this impressive factory. Even hemmed in by its residential surroundings, the Wheat Sheaf Works make for an impressive site. The factory was globally significant and another feather in Leicester's cap when it came to wearable manufacturing. The factory produced boots and shoes that were largely sold in Britain's co-operative shops, and it aimed to combine cutting edge manufacturing technology with good working conditions for the employees. Phineas Heyhurst was the architect and designer of the factory, and the construction was undertaken by the building branch of the Co-operative Wholesale Society. It is an architecturally significant red-brick building with Neo-Jacobean stylings and terracotta decorative dressings. Welsh slate was used for the roof. Tudor Road is perhaps the best known of the roads in Newfoundpool - a long, sweeping road of Victorian terraces (photo 4). Newfoundpool is an area of Leicester lying south of the former Leicester-Swannington railway. Orson Wright, purchased the land in 1885, and laid out roads across the area and sold off the land as building plots. The majority of houses built were of the two-storey terraced type, brick-built, with the corner sites constructed as shops. The old factory profiled in the first three photos was first listed as Thread's Clothing Company. A former shoe factory, Historic England detail as follows: 1901 with minor later alterations. Designed by Charles Dorman of Northampton. Edwardian Baroque Style. Red brick with painted dressings and slate hipped roofs. Chamfered plinth, moulded first floor band and dentilated eaves cornice. Curved recessed corners topped by small cupolas with ball finials. Two storey. #victorianarchitecture #victorianfactory #oldfactory #urbanregeneration #urbanphotographer #urbanlandscapes #innercity #leicester #myleicester #yourleicester #discoverleicester #visitleicester #architecturehunter #architecturedetail #architecturegram #architecturelover #architecturephotos #orsonwright #edwardianarchitecture
