Our Year 5 King's Ely Prep pupils had an awesome time experiencing life during Victorian Britain when they visited Gressenhall Farm and Workhouse! 😊 The action-packed trip was organised through our extensive co-curricular programme, to enrich the children's current topic in their History lessons. Gressenhall Farm and Workhouse is based in a former workhouse, originally opened in 1777 as a 'House of Industry'. Now the site houses a museum exploring what life was like for those who once lived and worked there. Dressed for the occasion, our young historians learnt about and got to try a whole host of different activities from the period - discovering what life was like under the regime of the workhouse clock, what food was served, oakum picking, and the different classes of inmates. They got to explore what work inmates had to do, and they visited the refractory cell (known as 'the dungeon') where inmates were sent if they broke the rules. Stepping into the workhouse yards was an eye-opener, especially to learn that some men could spend eight to nine hours each day working outside. Equally as fascinating were the boys' yard, the walls of which contain many examples of inmates' names scratched into bricks, the laundry, the school room, and the statues of Christopher High and his family. In the school room, Year 5s experienced how lessons would have been taught, as well as what punishments would have been issued for poor behaviour. A fantastic day trip, filled with learning, experiences, laughter and memories. Enjoy lots more photos on our Facebook page! 👏🏽 #kingsely #kingselyprep #schools #education #prepschools #victorians #history #historylearning #historyeducation #victorianbritain #steppingbackintime #gressenhallfarmandworkhouse #schooltrip #historytrip #experiences #opportunities #enrichment #learning #handsonlearning #cocurricular #cocurriculum #elyschools #cambridgeshireschools #eastangliaschools #schoollife #prepschoollife #independentschools #independenteducation #funlearning #creativelearning

Telling the sensational story of the real-life origins of the fictional Sherlock Holmes – and how crime fiction and crime fact collided in a case that gripped Victorian Britain. In 1893, young army officer Cecil Hambrough was murdered at the sprawling Ardlamont estate in Scotland, unleashing one of the most gripping court cases Victorian Britain had ever known. Even more remarkably, the case brought together two pioneering forensic experts – Joseph Bell and Henry Littlejohn – two men upon whom Arthur Conan Doyle’s Sherlock Holmes happened to be based. It is their involvement in the Ardlamont affair that reveals how the world’s most famous detective came to be: the worlds of crime fiction and crime fact were about to collide spectacularly. In this extraordinary book, Daniel Smith outlines the key roles of the two men whose powers of deduction had so inspired Doyle and explores the real-world origins of Sherlock Holmes through the prism of a mystery as engrossing as any case the Great Detective ever tackled. #TheMenWhoWereSherlockHolmes is out next Thursday 🔍 #SherlockHolmes #CrimeFiction #VictorianBritain #ForensicExperts #TrueCrime #DetectiveStory #ArthurConanDoyle #MysteryBooks #BookRelease #TrueCrimeBooks

A fascinating, revealing examination of divorce in Victorian Britain - and what it meant for society as a whole. It is a story of high drama, humour, pathos and tragedy, brimming with moral comment that throws a light on the preoccupations of the age. ‘Decadent Divorce: Scandal and Sensation in Victorian Britain’ by Ruth Derham On Thursday 11 January 1883, the new Royal Courts of Justice opened its doors for business. From that day forward a stream of dissatisfied spouses from all over the country passed through with their tales of marital woe. Their desperate attempts to prove their partner’s marital crimes to judge and jury unwittingly became something of a spectator sport; the most sensational, instructive or noteworthy stories were reported daily in copious detail by Fleet Street’s eager press. The great causes célèbres revealed stories of decadence and disregard, arrogance and entitlement; the faults and foibles of an aristocracy that had once held reverence as a birthright exposed to a growing and increasingly scathing middle- and working-class readership. Members of the professional class tasted the downside of celebrity; and for those of the working class who could scrape together enough money there was at last some relief from abusive, deserting or unfaithful spouses – but to what end? Decadent Divorce takes a peep through the keyhole of the court to witness, not just ‘what the butler saw’, but what the world was invited to see; to explore what this microcosm of late Victorian society tells us about society at large. The picture that emerges is one of high drama, humour, pathos and tragedy, brimming with moral comment that throws a light on the social tensions and preoccupations of the age. #NewTitle #NewBook #History #19thCentury #VictorianBritain #Victorian #Victorians #Divorce #DecadentDivorce #ScandalandSensationinVictorianBritain #AmberleyPublishing https://www.amberley-books.com/decadent-divorce.html

Something for lovers of pretty boys. This image was only confirmed in 1984 by the @hornimanmuseumgardens as one of our most-loved @hotvictorians, Mr Edward Heron-Allen (1861-1943). This cabinet card is circa 1884-1890, and shows Heron-Allen indulging in one of his many passions, violin-making. Don’t you wish you could be his passion that he so enthusiastically indulged in? I love a man who is confident working with wood. T H E HYDRO 🏨🛎️ We love Victorian Britain and how Victorian ingenuity and architecture shaped the country we see today. Something's we can no longer see 🙈 but it doesn't mean they're not still there if you go looking 👀 🚶. THE OBAN HILLS HYDROPATHIC SANATORIUM (an early version of today's luxury spa hotel) was conceived back in 1881 when the rail & steamship companies arrived in the town, bringing tourism and potentially great wealth for its entrepreneurs. The site occupied the finest position overlooking the 'Little Bay' and included 141 bedrooms, a grand ballroom, crown bowls, stables, golf course, cold water 💦 therapy (hence the name hydro) and a fine Victorian fenicular access railway powered by water. The project was budgeted to cost £75,000 💵🪙but after blasting their way through granite cliffs and finishing the 3 storey outer walls, the consortium of businessmen ran out of cash. The site went quiet and the idea was soon abandoned. If you look at the photos, you'll see what a grand building it 'almost' was and certainly it would have been the finest and most beautiful hotel in Oban. If you walk up to the abandoned site today, you'll discover parts of this once impressive building overgrown with ivy and trees. Such a shame the dream was never realised. #oban #visitoban #hydro #obanhills #luxuryhotels #spahotels #victorianbritain #selkietours

‘Captain Younghusband’s Charge’. On 22nd January 1879, During the final moments of the Battle of Isandlwana, Captain Reginald Younghusband, officer commanding of C Company, 1/24th Regiment (reportedly the last company of the 24th to die), led his company in a final bayonet charge down the slopes of the mountain. According to Zulu eyewitness accounts, the British company had retreated up the mountain, establishing a defensive position along the slope. They kept the Zulus at bay with rifle and bayonet until their ammunition ran out. Younghusband then took a few moments to shake hands with the remaining soldiers of his company before leading them in their final charge to oblivion, whirling his sword above his head. The captain and two others managed to reach one of the wagons, where he stood on top, and continued to fight until he was shot through the head. He was the last to fall. Zulu survivors spoke of him with great admiration. Out of respect for Captain Younghusband’s extreme bravery, they laid him reverently next to his fallen soldiers. #history #britishhistory #englishhistory #anglozuluwar #zuluwar #isandlwana #battleofisandlwana #victorianbritain #britisharmy #24thregimentoffoot #britishmilitaryhistory #heroism #britishempire #historian #historianlife #historybuff #painting #art #apictureisworthathousandwords

⭐⭐⭐⭐⭐ The reviews are in - and they are unanimous - "Well researched and written!" - "PASSENGERS: LIFE IN BRITAIN DURING THE STAGECOACH ERA" by James Hobson is a must-read! 🔗 Check out LINK in BIO 🔝 🔗 Click on product tag in image ⭐⭐⭐⭐⭐ Well Researched & Written "I’ve always enjoyed reading history & about road transport. This book combines both topics really well whilst conveying the many challenges facing people when travelling during the Georgian era. The various stories of not only the stage coach operators, but also the many inns & hotels served along the way really brings the narrative alive." ⭐⭐⭐⭐⭐ Excellently informative "A really good read and quite amusing in places. I recommend it to anyone researching the regency period and how they got about." ⭐⭐⭐⭐⭐ Well Researched, Fascinating "The author makes sure we understand that the days of traveling by stagecoach in the late 1700s and early 1800s were mostly dangerous, miserable and costly. And hell for the horses. He gives us details of the coaching inns and their various shortcomings, and reminds us that roads were nothing like those we enjoy today. Did they really drink so much more in the north of England in the 1890s? Maybe. Historians today question the sources of information for this map and others like it made at the time. Convictions for drunkenness began with police cracking down on it, and some counties were notorious for helping law enforcement look the other way with a reliable and endless supply of free beer. This map called “Geographical Distribution of Drunkenness” is still safely connected to the book it’s attached to: Joseph Rowntree and Arthur Sherwell’s “The Temperance Problem and Social Reform” of 1899. It’s not uncommon for maps to be cut out of books to frame or sell. Please don’t do this- it’s so nice to keep a treasure protected and hidden for occasional viewing! And if the map had been removed, you wouldn’t get to read that the authors question the map’s veracity within the text itself, admitting that a chart they’ve added tells a better story. Joseph Rowntree studied the impact of alcohol across classes and compared a variety of international approaches in an effort to find a solution to rampant drinking. He supported social reform in other areas too, and his legacy survives today as the Joseph Rowntree Foundation, Joseph Rowntree Reform Trust, and The Rowntree Society. Each entity serves in some capacity to support research that uncovers the impact of colonialism on modern culture in the UK, among other things. These images are from a book I own; there is a slightly different version of the map in “Drink Maps in Victorian Britain” from the Bodleian Library’s collection. #TemperanceHistory #DrunkHistory #VictorianBritain #JosephRowntree #RowntreeFoundation #RowntreeSociety #DrinkMaps #DrinkMapsInVictorianBritain @bodleianlibrarypublishing @bodleianlibraries #DrinkingStudiesNetwork #MappingDrunkenness #BeerPressure #BeerPersuasion

“When she was a little girl, the highlight of Lily’s week was helping her mother with deliveries from the laundry… In the sunshine the houses were so bright and sparkling Lily was sure that if she licked one of the stately columns that flanked the entrances, she would come away with a mouth full of sugar” The Golden Hour, Ch 7 🌅 My second novel The Golden Hour is a tale of two Brightons - the genteel crescents & their well heeled residents; and vast swathes of the population like Lily who work 6 days a week in a laundry & can barely afford tuppence entry to the pier. An unknown 23 year old Charles Dickens was thrilled to learn that “the Great George” (George Cruikshank) would be illustrating his first work of fiction in 1836, “Sketches by Boz”. Cruikshank was already well known for both his depictions of everyday life and his imbibing habit. They got on well for a while, after all they fancied themselves social reformers. Cruikshank took on a project for a temperance group in the late 1840s that would change his life. “The Bottle”, showing the downfall of working people who drank, sold over 100,000 copies in just a few days. The publisher expected him to toe the temperance line in real life, and encouraged Cruikshank to sign a pledge (see prior post) before taking another project. The result was a sequel, called “The Drunkard’s Children” in 1848. And a teetotaling George. Dickens and Cruikshank then had a falling out- over alcohol. Dickens believed in moderation but thought teetotalers were fanatics. Cruikshank insisted on abstaining, and pressured others to as well. They directed nasty barbs at each other in newspapers. It turns out they had more in common than they realized in that they lived contradictory lives. Dickens tried to have his wife, the mother of his 10 children, committed to an asylum so he could continue with his mistress, while a married Cruikshank willed his estate to the mother of his 10 children- his mistress. So much for “Victorian values”! Presenting Mr. William Friese-Greene (born William Edward Green, born on 7th of September, 1855, Bristol, UK – died on the 5th of May, 1921, in London, UK). Nominated by littlegrenouille Friese-Greene was a prolific English inventor and professional photographer. He was known as a pioneer in the field of motion pictures, having devised a series of cameras in 1888–1891 and shot moving pictures with them in London. He went on to patent an early two-colour filming process in 1905. Wealth came with inventions in printing, including photo-typesetting and a method of printing without ink, and from a chain of photographic studios. On 5th May 1921, Friese-Greene – then a largely forgotten figure – attended a stormy meeting of the cinema trade at the Connaught Rooms in London. The meeting had been called to discuss the current poor state of British film distribution and was chaired by Lord Beaverbrook. Disturbed by the tone of the proceedings, Friese-Greene got to his feet to speak. The chairman asked him to come forward onto the platform to be heard better, which he did, appealing for the two sides to come together. Shortly after returning to his seat, he collapsed. People went to his aid and took him outside, but he died almost immediately of heart failure. Given his dramatic death in poverty (his pockets contained only one shilling and ten pence when he died), surrounded by film industry representatives who had almost entirely forgotten about his role in motion pictures, there was a spasm of collective shock and guilt. A very grand funeral was staged for him, with the streets of London lined by the curious. A two-minute silence was observed in some cinemas, and a fund was raised to commission a memorial for his grave. He was buried in the eastern section of London's famous Highgate Cemetery. #hotvictorians #1890s #1900s #williamfriesegreene #cinematography #motionpicture #filmhistory #19thcenturyinventors #handsomevictorian #menofthepast #englishmen #victorianbritain #victorianengland
