Our first day out in the camper in East Suffolk. We decided to visit @snapemaltings which proudly sits on the bank of the River Alde and surrounded by an Area of Outstanding Natural Beauty. It's a beautiful building with heritage that's been impressively converted from it's industrial Victorian beginnings and is now home to independent shops, galleries, a restaurant, a café, and several performance venues. We absolutely loved the home and garden shop. Soo much so we bought a nice thick wool blanket to throw over the bed in the camper having found the previous night a bit chilly! In keeping with the campervan theme we opted for a green khaki coloured blanket. We considered the Sailor's Path but unfortunately didn't really know how long the route would take on foot and whether it would be too muddy for us. But you can imagine the ships and boats coming up the Alde River and folks of olde times running alongside on the path. #snape #snapemaltings #maltings #malt #heritage #riveralde #aldeburgh #eastsuffolk #vanlife #campervan #camper #vanlifestyle #vanlifediaries #outstandingbeauty #countryside #independentshops #shops #restaurant #cafe #victorianindustry #industrial #BenjaminBritten

A car boot find this morning, from 1895. The book states that on the 31st December 1893, there were 10,054 males and females in asylums in London. The adverts in the book are a mine of information on Victorian industry, from the belt driven giant washing machine, to indestructible paint. I love the fonts, illustrations and boasts of Victorian advertising, even if some of the items are disturbing, such as sound proof doors lined with asbestos, and toilets guaranteed not to freeze. Every asylum had crested china too of course, which is often found by mudlarks. #victorianasylum #victorianindustry #victorianadverts

Join us for this week's free lecture by Bob Trubshaw, 'The Ironstone Quarries of Leicestershire'. Between the 1870s and the 1970s the ironstone ridge between Holwell and Woolsthorpe-by-Belvoir was quarried for ironstone, mostly sent by rail to the blast furnaces at Scunthorpe. In the 1960s over 50,000 tons of ore was transported every week, making up fifteen percent of British Rail’s freight traffic. 7.30pm, Thursday 25 May, Leicester Museum & Art Gallery. Historians are still grappling with what the Clayfield brothers were attempting to invent. Some say it was an early computational engine, others suggest that it was a perpetual motion machine. Regardless, the confusion does not diminish the size and scope of the perplexing notes and baffling plans left behind, not to mention the lingering questions about a legacy never reached. #deepdream #deepdreamgenerator #stable diffusion #aiphotography #aiparody #artificialmachinery #generativeart #predictionengine #victorianindustry #industrialhistory #clayfieldbros #alternatehistories #missedhistory

Yesterday I visited Sygun Copper Mine (a dog friendly mine!) with @kathleenwaddy and @apupcalledlayla . With me being about 6 ft 4, Layla being too tiny to climb such big stairs and Kathleen not being comfortable with long winding tunnels, a mine with very low ceilings and 186 stairs, was in hindsight possibly not the best activity to have picked. That being said it was certainly interesting and a worthwhile adventure, and we are glad we did it. . . . #syguncoppermine #caves #adventurepup #dogfriendlyuk #gwynedd #beddgelert #sygunmine #historicmine #victorianindustry #victorianmine #discoversnowdonia #adventurers #dogfriendlysnowdonia #dogfriendlywales #snowdonianationalpark #miners #underground #thingstodowales #dogfriendlyactivities #coppermine #sygun #mindyourhead #hardhats #discoverwales #apupcalledlayla #tomwaddy #copperaesthetic #caveexplorers #dogsofinstagram #cavesinwales

The fantastic United Reform Church of Saltaire. ・・・ Saltaire was a planned village built by Sir Titus Salt in 1851, who had a giant textile mill and needed a place next to it to house all his workers. So he made a whole village for them with houses, a church, a hospital, an institute for reading and recreation, a school, a concert hall, a reading room, a billiard room, science lab and gymnasium. I love that name, Sir Titus Salt. The whole thing sounds like something from a Roald Dahl story. Saltaire has become a UNESCO World Heritage Site and it's kinda been absorbed into Bradford. It also has a goose. New: more Victorian tiles. My favourite here is the 15cm blue and white 'January' design showing the two young women. This is a Wedgwood tile and there's a world of social history packed into it about clothing, hair styles and indoor plants (we learn, for example, that they kept some pretty big citrus fruit trees indoors back then). The four pretty matching floral tiles are from Minton; not so the rare pair that were produced for Victoria's 1887 jubilee. One has the maker's mark Webb's Worcester Tileries on the back. The unusual willow pattern tile is another Minton while the densely patterned floral tile, which is held within a steel frame, is anonymous but has all the design hallmarks of the aesthetic period in the 1880s #victoriantiles #antiquewalltiles #antiquetiles #mintontiles #victorianhouse #victorianstyle #victoriandecor #socialhistory #historichairstyles #wedgwoodtiles #webbsworcestertileries #aestheticmovement #aestheticmovementceramics #queenvictoria #willowpattern #willowpatternceramics #periodhome #periodhousestyle #periodhomestyle #periodrenovation #worcester #victorianindustry

This is Chubb, Round & Co' s works, West Ferry Road, Millwall, London 1885. These photographs shows vast mounds of coconut husks waiting to be made into rope and matting. Waste at the end of the manufacturing process at this works was sold to gardeners as a soil improver. These pictures are of pit brow women and surface workers at one of the Hulton, Lancashire collieries circa 1887. These women picked the dirt from amongst coal passing by on screens and conveyors in the picking sheds, they were usually the wives or daughters of miners. More pit brow women were employed in the Lancashire coalfield than anywhere else. Concern at the unsuitability of the employment of women on the surface of collieries concerned the mining unions and press between 1859 and 1868. Others outside the industry also took up their cause, whether they wanted them or not. Moves to make their work illegal in 1886, led to a deputation in May 1887 to Parliament by Lancashire pit women resulted in the proposed legislation being removed. In 1911 another move was made to ban their work, but the women were successful in their appeal once again. #hultoncollieries #lancashirecoalfield #victorianindustry #coalmines #1887 #pitbrowwomen #surfaceworkers #coalminers #neveragain

We can’t win them all – visit #digbeth now before its too late. Digbeth is a heritage conservation area in the heart of Birmingham. Like Manchester’s iconic Northern Quarter, Digbeth is home to a cosmopolitan community of small businesses and artists, that have brought new life to the area in recent years. This is all about to change as plans have been approved to repurpose the district as housing and offices, including adapting part of one of the area’s largest buildings, Custard Factory, for a housing development. Despite The Victorian Society’s efforts to highlight the architectural, cultural, and community significance of the area, our pleas remained unheeded, and the council voted unanimously to go through with the plans in May. New high-rises will also dwarf the area’s other buildings, and this important part of Birmingham’s cultural and historical fabric will be lost. The Victorian Society is the first line of defence against demolition and alterations that threaten Edwardian and Victorian Heritage in the UK. Give us a like and a follow to keep up to date on the fight to save Victorian and Edwardian heritage. #birmingham #victorianindustry #victorianheritage #heritagematters #saveourheritage #victorianarchitecture #victorianhistory #thevictorians #victorianengland #northernequarter

This Bevington & Sons Neckinger Mills, Bermondsey circa 1861. Leather merchants and tanners. Bermondsey was the traditional home of Leather processing in London. Known for its foul smelling pits where animal skins underwent tanning. Bevingtons' works were one of the biggest. The firm specialised particularly in dyed morocco leather from goat skins, used for covering coach-linings, chair covers and for the finest bookbinding. The first picture shows the cleansing and paring sheep skins for wool rugs. Secondly, we can see the splitting of sheepskins in the lime condition for skiver and chamois leather. The last picture shows finishing skivers and Persians for hat linings and boot purposes. The researchers here at Sheffield General Cemetery have been doing work to uncover the stories of the more unknown and untold lives of people buried on the site. This has included aiming to uncover a histories of people who were Black, Asian and Minority Ethnic and including Refugees and Asylum Seekers who lived and worked in Sheffield. These histories are very important to tell and the NHLF project which is ongoing at the Cemetery is committed to opening up the heritage of the site, giving all people a stake in the heritage and equally weighting the importance of all the stories and heritage that can be found there. All these stories give insight into important facets of Sheffield’s history and global history, including knowledge of Sheffield’s role in British colonialism and industrial past. Porth Wen Brickworks. This disused ruined Victorian Brickworks sits on the Anglesey coastline just a couple of miles of Cemaes Bay. Damaged by sea erosion and years of neglect, nature had begun to reclaim this interesting piece of Anglesey’s industrial heritage despite it being a scheduled monument. The brickworks is nestled deep on rocky and rugged cliffs edge overlooking Porth Wen in a spectacular and magical setting. The site is breathtaking and has lots to see and explore!! #porthwenbrickworks #porthwen #anglesey #cemaesbay #coastalpath #coastline #victorian #victorianindustry #industrialheritage #oldways #brickworks #decay #beautifuldecay #disused #abandoned #derelict #magical #eerie #hauntedlandscape #hauntedisle #ghostland #folkhorror #folklore #spectacular #ruin #ruined #exploring #rambling #reclaimedbynature #haunting
