Porthcawl RNLI's volunteer crew were paged by HM Coastguard at 4.04pm today (Monday 6 May 2024) following a 999 call to the Coastguard from 3 people with a dog who had found themselves cut off by the incoming tide at Nash Point. The charity's Atlantic 85 lifeboat, Rose of the Shires and D Class lifeboat, Hugo Missen were both launched on service and made best speed to the location. The team from Llantwit Major Coastguard were also paged in case they were required to carry out a rope rescue. Once the Atlantic 85 arrived on scene a crew member swam ashore to reassure the casualties. Due to there being a slight swell the helm of the Atlantic decided to wait for the D Class to arrive before a decision was made on the best method to extract the casualties. Once the D Class arrived on scene the helm made the decision to veer back on their anchor line in order to reach a ledge to rescue the casualties. All casualties along with their dog were taken onboard the D Class and transferred across to the larger Atlantic 85 lifeboat. They were then brought back to the lifeboat station as the swell meant it would have been difficult to land them safely ashore on the Vale of Glamorgan coastline near to where they had been rescued. This was the first call for our D Class D861 Hugo Missen following a period of being away for routine maintenance at the RNLI Inshore Lifeboat Centre in Cowes. A lovely evening walk in Monknash this evening. It was so peaceful with only the sounds of the lambs, birds and the engine of a ship sailing by. We saw a pair of choughs which are rare, they look like crows but have Orange beaks and legs. Our crew were paged at 12.51pm today by HM Coastguard to assist with a multi agency search. This is me on a walk, in my #specialplace #lundyisland, back in the days when I actually owned a pair of shorts. If you dont know it, #Lundy is a small, granite outcrop in the #Bristolchannel, 3 miles long and half a mile wide. Chris Packham talks about it quite a lot. Blink and you'll miss it. It's the place I got engaged, where we married a few years later, where we holiday every few years with the kids. It's where we snorkelled in ice cold, crystal clear waters with inquisitive (unnervingly huge) seals for company, where we became impromptu singers with a troop of fiddlers in the one and only place you can congregate for a drink, the tiny #mariscotavern, where we got to ring the church bells because we shared a chance pint with the visiting vicar and our kids got on.. It's where we saw our first proper #shooting star, the #spacesatellite, the #milkyway, and our first #puffin ... its a place full of enigmatic map-names, Rat Island, Jenny's Cove, Rocket Pool Pond, Giant's Chair, Devil's Slide, Shutter Point... No cars, no TV, no mobile signal. Simple things the #sky, the #sea and #birds galore. The sound of sheep and skylarks or sometimes just the wind. It's enough to put most people off to be fair. The image shows Megan Ruth-Trump, the self-proclaimed River Goddess, luxuriating in the waters of the River Avon after her marriage ceremony with the river. By symbolically granting the river “legal personhood,” Ruth-Trump forces us to confront a crucial question: Shouldn’t rivers, these life-giving arteries of our planet, deserve the same legal protections we afford human beings? Her act resonates on multiple levels. It’s a vibrant performance, a splash of colour against the backdrop of environmental apathy. But beneath the whimsy lies a profound message. This “marriage” compels us to see the river not just as a resource to be exploited, but as a living entity deserving of respect and care. It’s a call to action disguised as a playful ritual, a way to tap into our emotions and inspire us to fight for the rivers that sustain us. I last visited Caldey Island as a child and generally I tend to remember places quite well, but not Caldey for some reason. Not a single road or path felt familiar, nor the cafe or the shop. The lighthouse felt brand new to me, and as I walked through throngs of bluebells back to the pier I took comfort in the fact that I got to have a first experience twice in my life. Caldey has a beautiful peace to it amidst constant birdsong; I saw a red squirrel, black swans, and no shortage of butterflies.
