A little story.... on BH weekend it was the Royal Escape Race. Elite Sailing students Adam and Cara, who trained with Elite two years ago, came second in their class on their Moody yacht, Twilight. And we feel extremely proud of their incredible achievement. Race conditions were challenging, and it was 17 hours of racing with both boats arriving in Fecamp at 01.30 am. Adam and Cara decided to take on the challenge in the knowledge Steve and Sam, both Elite instructors and boat owners would be present for company and encouragement. We understand they committed to the race after a beer with Steve and Sam, we’re unsure of how many beers at this stage 😂 Huge congratulations to Adam and Cara on your first race, and Cara’s first channel crossing. And to Steve and Sam for providing the reassurance and confidence. RACE INFO Launched in 1977 to mark the Queen’s silver jubilee, the historic Royal Escape Race is now amongst the oldest offshore sailing races in the country. Celebrating the escape of King Charles II from Cromwell after the Battle of Worcester, the race follows the route that Charles took aboard the coal barge Surprise from Shoreham-by-Sea to reach safety in the Normandy port of Fécamp. The apparently simple course nevertheless provides plenty of challenges for both enthusiastic offshore racers and the less experienced wanting to try their hand at some cross channel racing. What an amazing atmosphere on Islay for Fèis Ìle 2024! We sat in the sunshine drinking craft ales listening to a local band, followed by a Whisky Nosing and Ceilidh event. When you learn to rest, you see how much further you can go; the suffering becomes bearable because they are temporary and the mission gains momentum in each step; of which you need not talk all of them; just your fair share on the path. We woke up at 0200, and regretted sleeping before the sun rose. We’d covered a remarkable distance the 1st day into the Gulf Islands, and had gained some confidence in the motors new cruising speed (we’d picked up ½ a Knott after a tune, and a hull clean). But out in the strait of Georgia at 0300 bashing in waves with mixed moonlight and a full time bow watch; my hopes were diminishing for our planned timing to reach the next gate; Seymour narrows; "one of the vilest stretches of water in the world." as described by Captain George Vancouver; the island's name sake. The narrows can reach up to 15 kts in current; and have taken down 120 vessels and took 114 lives via the infamous Ripple rock, which was demolished in 1958 with a project cost of the equivalent of today's 30M CAD. But here we were, with a head wind; back current and dark skies, plodding along; with slim prospects of making our gate; and the likelihood of having to wake up at 3am the next day and do it all over again. I left my watch to go down below as the sun was rising; normally the most optimistic times of the day,’ David was smiling; simply satisfied to be out on a boat; but my expectations were arrogant; and I had allowed them to steal the joy of presence. When I awoke, the current was with us and we had begun to gain speed; yet the current was always against us up in the straight; we had found the middle of the inside passage; where there could be a double flood; one helping; the other full on against us. But Remy had been here before; and suggested we keep an eye on the water surface and other boats; and low and behold; we kept our speed; edging in and out of the back flow... We found the next three flags we need at a small chandlery , they are a very funny shape tho 😂 - Indonesia 🇮🇩 , Malaysia 🇲🇾 , Thailand 🇹🇭 - we also plan on visiting Singapore but don’t want to hassle with clearing in there so we will just visit via land once we are in Malaysia. We had thought we were going to spend most of the down season (Nov-April) in Thailand but after asking @sailing_nandji for their advice (Thanks Nandji Crew 🙏🏻) we are leaning towards splitting the time between Malaysia and Thailand. Neither myself or @rhonda.of.triteia have ever visited any countries in Asia so we are very excited about getting up into Southeast Asia ! Heavy weather pictures are notorious to capture; here we are crossing the Juan De Fuca after a 4am start in 20kts of wind on our beam, in 3+ feet of swell. The current helped us out of Admiralty inlet, across the inlet, and into the San Juans hitting 10kts at times under sail. I did want to make plans to cross into Canada without knowing if our crew and the weather would cooperate but getting to Friday harbor by noon inspired us to call the marina and ask about the Pender harbor border crossing; which we found out was 24/7. After check-in at poets cove, we rounded to Pender harbor, dropped anchor popped the dinghy, and went to shore for land food. Seattle to Gulf Islands in one day with sunlight to spare. We haven't sailed much together but @joyinzmiddle Wes one of the first sailors I met in Seattle two years ago when I was searching for crew to join at duck dodge. She's put me in touch with several boats and we've had many a coffee planning for races and boat projects. Her escapades on race to Alaska last year were inspiration for Kate and i to head up this year and I'm glad to have her along for talk about all the passages to consider for the upcoming race. @david.totah and I met skiing this winter season, and I didn't realize he had sea legs until three weeks ago at breakfast when he told us about his time as a sea scout in the San Francisco Bay. Trusting me that this was safe and possible he agreed to join; boat unseen (and at four am) for a long and taxing series of passages. Our background in skiing has brought up all the aspects of trip planning and risk to the trip. It's been great having these two on board. Our conversations have been oscillating the local canadian coast around us and the history of the Sailish sea, to how we are going to counter point the ginger beef for dinner tonight. They're also up for two AM departures, 18 hour days, bow watches for logs in crashing waves, and a good drink. Reflections from Baja 💭 On our trip down the gorgeous coast of Baja California, the memories that stand out are the immense beauty of the wildlife we encountered, that felt like they were welcoming us to each anchorage and celebrating our journey down the coast! The concentration of whales, dolphins, and mobula rays as we came into Cabo was mind blowing, and we didn’t expect how much exuberant wildlife we’d be gifted to see leaping out of the water joyfully. This trip was a different pace to our ocean passages and it felt like we got to take our time a bit more and get to know the anchorages we called home each night. We saw parts of Baja that are hard to access by land - especially the gorgeous Bahia Santa Maria that was populated by only a small fishing camp, where we otherwise had the whole bay to ourselves until we saw a mother and a baby humpback playing and breaching in the waters just off the boat. There’s a feeling of mysticism and natural magic in the air in Baja and we felt lucky to be a part of it for a short while. ✨ *another plus is that our @saturnrafts dinghy allows us to separate from any crowds and explore independently! Dolphins dance, porpoises play, Cockpit crew’s delight, camera’s shy stay. Cheesy scones, fresh and warm, More alluring than dolphins’ charm. In Carlingford Lough, tide’s strong embrace, Anchor dropped at Greencastle, in a peaceful space. Pat’s Spag Bol, an epic feast, A perfect end to our journey’s feast.
