I stood on the corner of Gerrard St and Wardour St to sketch this, out of harm's way, I thought. Soon, 3 gazebos were crammed between the building I was stood next to and the barrier gate to Gerard Street that I was leaning on, blocking my view and forcing me to beat hasty retreat. The street was transforming into a number of pop-up restaurants and soon filling up with delivery vans and tourists. Happily, I managed to get the bare bones to the sketch down before all this happened, and I was able to complete the ink line drawing from a slightly different viewpoint. Gerrard St is a very busy place, and it was fun to observe the rapid transformation. Weather sunny and warm. A few weeks ago @urbansketcherslondon did a Sketchwalk in Hampstead, but I wasn't able to make it along on rhe day, so on Sunday me and @sala_s.i went to Hampstead and did our own Sketchwalk. Drawing @lockhatters felt a bit like finding the holy grail as it is London's oldest shop! Founded in 1676, soon 350 years, still run by descendants of the same family👏🏼🤩👏🏼🤩👏🏼 Apparently also the oldest har shop in the world. On a practical level it was a bit more challenging as St. James street has a constant stream of slow traffic and even worse, big delivery vans parking in front of the shop and covering it up🫤 I actually went there twice to get a proper drawing, but the second time was no better than the first. I ended up sitting on the street drawing from photos I'd just taken😅 On a positive note, not being able to see the shop allowed me to take more liberties so included some people from the past in front of the present day display. I will need to return to this building as I haven't done it justice. It is the The Ukrainian Catholic Cathedral of the Holy Family in London, it's been that since the 1960s but before that it was the Congregational King's Weigh House Church designed by Alfred Waterhouse in 1891, his most famous building is the Natural History Museum in London. I was so pleased when I realised the @libertylondon building is exactly 100 yeast this year, as the brief for my ongoing drawing project is to draw businesses that have been in the same building for 100 years or more. This building always attracted me but I didnt't realise just how massive it is until I tried to draw it!! I was realistic enough to only try to capture half, but even that quickly grew out of the sketchbook🙃 One great think about drawing is how it makes you notice much more than when you just look, I'd never previously noticed the chimneys on top of this massive structure before. The five next to each other all have different beautiful brick patterns on them. I find the only trouble with outdoor sketching in Covent Garden is finding a place where your view will not be blocked by delivery vans, walking tour groups, and street entertainment audiences. So I challenged myself to find somewhere to sit that avoided these pitfalls, and I found a place that was sandwiched between bollards and barriers. A box seat with a box of flowers on the top looked ideal. What could go wrong? Within 5 minutes, a street cleaner parked his barrow in front of me to go off to get a cup of tea. This was followed by the flower waterer asking me to move twice so that he could water the flowers on my seat in two visits. Then I realised that I was by a rubbish bin which, in Westminster, incorporates a cigarette extinguisher and a convenient place to lean for smokers, of which there were plenty. Mostly construction workers taking a break from refurbishing the interior of the property I sat next to. Still, I managed to produce these two sketches within an hour, which I painted later. Newington Green. I’ve been meaning to draw my neighbourhood for the past few years. The north-eastern corner of the Green has been slightly truncated to include more trees into the composition. The building on the left is Newington Green Unitarian Church, which was founded in the 18th century by English Dissenters and where Mary Wollstonecraft was a regular. The writer is celebrated by a stencil on the side of the church and a statue in the middle of the Green that has drawn mixed reactions from the public. Newington Green. Lovely evening yesterday. I went up @chimneylift109 to draw in an evening organised with @londonfineartstudios. As you will have noticed landscapes isn’t something I do and 45 minutes isn’t long to capture such an amazing view (& on a beautiful day too!). I made the mistake of having 2 attempts. The white and green version was my warm up….
