🌿 | “A day late and a dollar short,” as my father would say. But these days I’ve learned to be forgiving of my limitations in equal measure to the gratitude I hold for my blessings. After all, on #Beltane we honor the spring seeds we’ve planted and bless summer growth ahead for the autumn harvest through a sun celebration of warmth and indulgence. And to indulge is to grant oneself the pleasures of something perceivably unearned or even discouraged. I can’t speak for everyone, but I spent most of my life feeling unworthy of my own forgiveness for my many missteps and my seeming need to learn lessons the hard way as well as for the challenges faced daily in my chronically ill body and mind. I’ve also realized that as somewhat of a bard, I can only reflect upon what I’ve already done. I like to be IN the energy of the experience while it’s happening—something that I don’t like to plan or create in advance. As a consequence, I’ll always tend to post my well-wishes the day after I’ve practiced my rituals and marinated in my experience. So yesterday, between my working hours, I baked my weekly gluten-free sandwich bread and oh-so-fragrant gluten-free lemon-poppyseed bread for my family. I cut my sweet butter into cubes to soften quickly on a ceramic plate with increased surface area exposed to the warm air before blending it with honey and lavender flowers. The taste of the lemon with honey and butter and the occasional herbacious sweetness of culinary lavender was everything I hoped it would be. Even still, I couldn’t shake a strange feeling of anxiety and was later surprised to see the lavender incense cone I lit had split while burning and taken the shape of a crow’s beak emerging from the sand. A strange sight and more food for thought in the already over-stocked larders of my mind. My wish to all: May the flowers be fruitful and the summer sun forgiving. Simple post this week because I'm still recovering from a viral infection that's making my head swim. I adore kitchen magick because it's almost like rewarding myself with something delicious after I've weaved magick into it. This round it was a transmutation spell by utilising some pantry staples and leftover ingredients to create a decadent bread & butter pudding dessert (though I burnt the top ooops).

So tonight we wanted chocolate chip cookies! 🍪 And I went searching, as I always do, for @kingarthurbaking recipes. 📝 I chose a new recipe that was one of their Recipes of the Year, the Supersized Super Soft Chocolate Chip Cookies 🍪 But I did not want to wait the prescribed 24-48 hours for the flavors in the cookie dough to marry, I just wanted to try the two new techniques involved: making brown butter 🧈 and #tangzhong! Tangzhong is an Asian technique of cooking a bit of the flour with milk (or water) prior to adding it to the recipe. This gelatinizes the starches and makes the end product softer and more delicious. 😋 I opted for the cookie bars mentioned in the tips section, instead! ☺️ These cookies definitely took more work than my usual chocolate chippers, but by the smell of them as they cool, I know it was worth it! ✌️ Slides: 1. Tonight, for the first time, I made CONCHAS! 🇲🇽 One of my intentions for this new moon was to bake new recipes and conchas drew my eye because they were so pretty and looked tasty AND I had all the ingredients on hand for them, which is important! 💫 I was NOT PREPARED for the labor involved, though some might think they are easy! ♿️ This is the first “sweet” dough and the first “egg” dough I’ve ever worked with. 🥚 Recipe is from @kingarthurbaking - search for “conchas” Pictured above in the carousel are a few of the steps I took to make these delicious sweet rolls. 🍭 1. So we all remember my frowny determined face from last night/early this morning, right? 😤 I made Spicy Cheese Puffs! It was an Adventure! I did not document the process as thoroughly as possible, I’m afraid, but the carousel shows a bit of what I did. So it started with a pâtè à choux mixed with masa harina to make a mass that looked rather like instant mashed potatoes when done, only shiny. Then I transferred it to my mixer, where I added four eggs, one at a time until each egg was incorporated and the choux was properly homogenized and even shinier, but more pliable. Then came the adding of the spices. I was not satisfied with what the recipe called for, it was definitely intended to be white people spicy, not actually spicy, so I upped the spices from 1/4 tsp to 1 tsp and added a bit more cheese than called for. Then I combined these with a gentle stir. Then I made a huge mess getting it into a piping bag to make the puffs on parchment paper. And then it was into the oven and time to fret! FINAL VERDICT - they were puffy and airy, and fun to snack on, but almost flavorless, with only a ghost of cheese and spice. I baked a little too long, and there was nowhere near enough spice. I now know how to adjust the recipe for next time, so they turn out better! ☉ | Prior to the development and discovery of modern chemistry, the alchemists of old believed that transformation of matter was achievable through the careful combination of speculative thought and physical manifestation, particularly in the development of a compound or elixer that could grant long life and turn lead into gold. Now, I’ve never myself transformed base metals into precious metals nor discovered the secret to immortality, but I have through the arts of pickling and fermenting honed the ability to transform matter into something that not only promotes gut health while aiding digestion, but also tastes absolutely delicious. Some years ago, I was diagnosed with acute anxiety disorder. You might think art would help in that area, but no! Seems each proverbial weapon in my arsenal was designed for a different monster. And while art helps me to transmute my trauma as writing helps to ground my scattered thoughts, my anxiety has best been soothed by cooking, canning, and, yes, pickling. The time spent chopping, peeling, measuring, weighing, and following careful processes has become like ritual, as I muse and meditate on myth and spiritual concepts. As such, I’ve transmuted what was dull within myself into something luminous through the magic of the mundane. Bringing together my version of the Tria Prima (my own three primary elements of personal transformation—art, writing, and cooking), I’ve decided to begin incorporating more writing and, yes, the art of kitchen magick into my art presentation. I’m still navigating what that looks like, as I get back into the #LemniscusTarot, but I’m seeing printed quality zines and possibly audio or video content. This is some really good food for thought as we enter spring and garden planting season! 👇 -------- @nourishedkitchen The best remedies are in your own garden. I see this happen over and over again in the wellness industry - one food lauded as a near cure-all. And all too often, it's both expensive and from some far-off place - making it out of reach for a good many people. Think about it: acai berry, manuka honey, coconut everything. Don't get me wrong: these are awesome foods (and maybe they're even local to you ❤️). BUT, I think that when superfoods trend, we forget the goodness closer to home. Thyme is one of them. In European traditions, thyme symbolizes both courage and protection. And in folk medicine, it's used to fortify the lungs, support the immune system, and as a digestive aid. A few animal studies have examined its role in lung health and found that thyme shows promise in easing inflammatory lung conditions, lending support to its traditional uses as an herbal medicine. Other researchers have focused on its antioxidant capacity and anti-inflammatory activity. And you can find it in just about any grocery store, too. Plus it's super easy to grow, either in a garden or even in pots on your windowsill. One of my favorite remedies is a simple herbal tisane with thyme, ginger, lemon and just the right dollop of honey. Perfect for when you feel that twinge of a sore throat creeping up. It's also a perfect addition to the broth pot, especially as the weather turns colder and the days seem shorter than ever. You need a little immune support then, and thyme works wonderfully to give you subtle, little boost. And remember: You don't have to look too far for wholesome, nourishing foods or medicinal herbs.

Synonymous with Easter, the crosses on the buns supposedly represent the cross on which jesus died and supposedly the spices used are the same ones used to embalm his body. However, these sweet buns have far more ancient origins. There have been evidence of ancient Egyptians offering crossed breads to their own gods. The Saxons too have offered sweetened buns to their own goddess of spring or light, Eostre (who gave her name to Easter) . Some claim the cross represents different things according to each culture, sometimes it's the four seasons, other times its the different phases of the moon, and even the horns of an ox offered as sacrifice. Whatever it maybe, these delicious snacks were a fun delicious bake and alittle kitchen magick.

My 6th Great-grandfather was an immigrant from #Ireland. This is a popular dish in Germany, Ukraine, Poland, and Austria too. During the Jewish holiday, eating fried, oniony potato pancakes represents #perseverance, and a little bit of #magick! This is what your local grocery store doesn’t want you to know: berries and fresh produce will last WEEKS longer when they are stored in a #MasonJar. I do it with veggies and herbs too! When you leave them in the plastic bags and containers from the store, it allows the bacteria and air to make them decompose faster. So instead, I wash my berries with vinegar & water, let dry completely, then store them in airtight glass jars, helping to slow down the oxidation process. Not gonna lie- I might have been a little high when I decided to make up this recipe… BUT the flavor profile was SPOT ON in the end! 🤤 These #Gingerbread #Rosemary #OrangeZest cookies are the best I’ve EVER made! I had a leftover box of gingerbread mix from the holidays, but I wanted to “elevate” the taste, so I added rosemary… and then (because I was already baked) I thought orange zest would compliment it too. And I wasn’t wrong! I added extra cinnamon and decreased the butter so they came out extra chewy and fluffy, too! The real test was my daughter and friends who thought they were delicious! It’s just pizza, right? - What you don’t know is this is the result of me taking my rage at my husband’s irresponsible behavior and transforming it into love and grace. - What no one sees is the healing that happened in my heart when I allowed my wedding vows to stay at the front of my mind, even in the thick of my righteous anger. Allowing my love for my man to take center stage enabled me to address my anger in a more healthy way. - The saying is “The way to a man’s heart is through his stomach.” Aren’t we all susceptible to this level of care, though? When someone wants to nourish us, don’t we feel it in our hearts? - So, I learned to make pizza to show my man that, even when he makes me so furious, my love is still stronger. Pizza is his favorite food, and learning to make it from scratch not only blew him away, it healed his heart, too. It allowed him to see that his human mistakes don’t make him unworthy; that he doesn’t walk his path alone; that he is heard and loved and appreciated, even when he’s low. - So, yes, it’s just pizza. Healing, transforming, nourishing pizza that helped save me from allowing my relationship to burn in my fiery rage. - Kitchen magick can seem mundane, but it’s one of the strongest forms of energy a person can work with. We all have to eat, after all!
