Whale you look at that 🐳 We have two exceptional Chumash Native American whale effigies up for auction this weekend! 🪨🐚 Steatite set with shell beads. These effigies date back to about 1200-1600s. These whales were used by the Chumash as charms to ensure luck in fishing or hunting along the California Coast. The pièce de résistance of the Cowper Chapel is this fine altar tomb featuring a life size and eerily life like effigy of the 7th Earl Cowper. Francis Thomas De Grey Cowper, 7th Earl Cowper d.1905, known as Viscount Fordwich, was the last Cowper Earl with which upon his death the Earldom became extinct. In his lifetime, he was a Lord Lieutenant of Ireland and would also be admitted to the then privy council. Rather staggering was his wealth in which he was a millionaire by inheritance and owned nearly 38,000 acres of land, upon his death without issue his wealth was split between the children of his three sisters. Choose your pleurant!! Ten pleurants or weepers from the tomb of Isabella of Bourbon, second wife of Charles the Bold. Isabella’s tomb in the Sint-Michielsabdij, Antwerp featured 24 of these figures cast in bronze accompanied by a bronze effigy of Isabella. The monument was dismantled during an uprising in 1566 and only 10 pleurants survived. The pleurant figures appear to represent a the ancestry of Isabella rather than traditional mournful supporters with cloaks and hoods that we usually see. Sunday Service. Standing in the quiet of the churchyard of St.Nicholas in Stanford on Avon you are literally a stone’s throw over the eponymous river from Northamptonshire into Leicestershire. And a quick crow’s flight from one of the biggest road junctions in the country (M6, M1, A14) which probably explains the double-padlocked and chained outer door. When I first came here I got very excited by this mound at the east end. Thinking it must be an ancient tumulus usurped by the newer religion I was perhaps disappointed that it is in fact the family vault of the Cave family, whose William & Mary house is next door. But thinking about it, whoever raised this very unusual mound for a churchyard probably took the idea from pre-history. Most famous for signing the Magna Carta, he became king in 1199, when his much more popular older brother, Richard the Lionheart, was killed. Characters of Late Medieval Scotland. • Got a brilliant tip off from @kesdrawsfights on a unique sculpture in Coupar Angus. This panel would have formed part of a tomb chest, under an effigy, and sat in the abbey church. The abbey has long since been destroyed but this fragment is almost unscathed. • It shows a series of ‘weepers’ - individuals mourning the deceased. This frieze is very martial - all men, most armed - so it’s probably from a knight’s burial. The jaunty fella on the far right, carrying a long axe, caught my attention. He’s holding a classic ‘Gallowglass’ style axe - used widely in Ireland and the Western Isles of Scotland. Is this a representation of a Highland warrior in a lowland lord’s service? Or merely a bit of unique Scottish material culture appearing in medieval art? In folk magic and Withcraft, a poppet is a doll made to represent a person, for casting spells on that person or to aid that person through magic. They are occasionally found lodged in chimneys. These dolls may be fashioned from such materials as a carved root, grain or corn shafts, a fruit, paper, wax, a potato, clay, branches, or cloth stuffed with herbs with the intent that any actions performed upon the effigy will be transferred to the subject based on sympathetic magic. There is also more of a sinister way to design these poppets. 📍 Great Barrington, St Mary, Gloucestershire . 🖋 A lovely Cotswold church, St Mary’s is a Norman foundation which was largely rebuilt in the early Tudor period. Originally built in the 12th century, the best surviving Romanesque feature of the building is the beautifully carved chancel arch. In the late 15th and early 16th century the majority of the church was rebuilt in the Perpendicular style. There are a number of interesting monuments here. Now stuck behind the organ is the effigy of St Edmund Bray d. 1620. Though it’s Jacobean, the ruff makes his dress look much more Tudor. I’m no expert on 17th century dress, but I wonder if this was a case of an effigy carved within his lifetime, maybe many years before he died? At the back of the church is the stunning but poignant 18th century memorial to Jane and Edward Bray. They were the children of Edmund and Frances Bray of Great Barrington Manor, which stands near the church. Jane died aged 7 of smallpox in 1711, and her brother Edmund contracted the same disease in 1720, dying at the age 14. The children are depicted here holding the hands of an angel leading them through the clouds. Where is this church? Thanks to Houston Chronicle and writer @andrewdansby on this superb write-up on David Best and the weeklong community build leading up to the official unveiling of The Houston Temple, his first temple constructed in Texas. ≈1,500 pieces meticulously layered together in beautiful patterns and standing in the Orange Show's World HQ lot as a place for reflection and mourning of those we hold dear. Starting May 9, the temple will be on view through Nov. 6 for weekly Thursday vigils from 6-9pm.
