It was sad to see how much time and the elements had erased from this clifface. What was once covered in mulitcolor expressions is now just flecks of paint that tease the imagination. These figures were among the few to barely survive the decay of the rock, and even then, are succumbing to the inevitable. These Basketmaker figures have been looking out across the landscape from this tucked away alcove for over 1500 years. The fact that even this much remains is incredible. It's been an incredible several weeks drifting across various deserts observing rockart and amazing sites. I feel so grateful to be able to walk this landscape and in the company of such awesome, like-minded folks. This was one of the more unique pictos we observed on our wanders. This Basketmaker figure is unique for several reasons. Besides the use of multiple colors, if you look close, that is the footprint of an infant resting on the top of the figures head. Several toddler footprints also grace this cliff next to this figure. The size of the footprint is maybe 2 inches, meaning the baby couldn't have been more than just a few weeks old... maybe just days old. To see a snapshot in time like this always just leaves me in awe and reverence. This place was not abandoned. Between work and play, the last couple weeks have yielded some artifacts of incredible craftsmanship. This pendant is, by far, the most beautiful piece of jewelry I've ever found. Made of a beautiful red chalcedony that glows against the sun, the amount of work it would have taken to make this beauty is mind-boggling. The points range from a possible Elko corner notch to a couple of Rose Peak corner notch to a possible Bonito side notch. The knives and bifaces were all within a dense lithic scatter, and for both knives, the bases were found about a meter away from the tips. Lastly, displaying 3 double spirals, the coolest handle I have ever come across. Not shown: a small cache of shell beads (coming from the Gulf of California), a stone drill, a small point, and 5 game pieces associated with a burial, and several hundred beads made from bone, shell, and coral accompanied with a turquoise pendant associated with another burial. All artifacts were admired and left in place where found. Burials and associated artifacts were covered with soil and left to continue their journey back to earth. It can not be expressed enough how important it is to leave artifacts in place. These are part of the story here. Part of what still gives the site a presence. When a site becomes sterile of artifacts, it loses part of its spirit. The desert is calling, and I must go ... for the sake of my own sanity. Sometimes, finding panels can be almost as exhilarating as finding a pot or rare artifact. This one was one of those times. We'd been backpacking and following the rims of some of our favorite canyons, glassing every nook, crack, and cranny for signs. While standing on one such rim, binoculars glued to my face, I caught a quick glimpse of red in a double X pattern between two trees. Instantly, as my brain processed the image, I knew I caught a glimpse of something special. The topography and vegetation wouldn't allow any other glimpses, just a tease of red, but it was enough. As we found a route down and navigated the ledge, at one point, we had to duck and crawl under a low overhang. There, we noticed a figure in red painted on the ceiling, as if welcoming us. As we crawled out and turned the corner, we were greeted with one of the finest red pictograph panels I've ever seen in the area. It stopped us in our tracks and weakened the knees. Breaths became short and heavy as the adrenaline took over. It's almost a state of shock you find yourself in....immobilized. These are some of my favorite moments. Completely in the moment. Nothing else existed besides us and this prehistoric expression. We sat in silence. We sat in curious conversation. We sat in awe. We sat in reverence. Sure, there are larger, more elaborate panels, but this was not only new to us, it was new to everyone I know that have been walking these canyons for decades. The setting is also exquisite, looking across the deepest, most elaborate part of the canyon. Its placement was carefully chosen, and its location will remain hidden so that others may make the same exhilarating discovery someday if they put in the work and read the signs. A sample of beautiful ceramics from the work week. These pieces represent several different styles found in Northern Arizona dating to the Pueblo II period (900-1150 BCE). Tusayan whitewares, such as Dogoshzi b/w, Soshi b/w, and Kana'a b/w, were widely produced in the Kayenta region and traded across the southwest. Deadman's b/r and Tusayan corrugated are also represented here. Standing stories and rock rust (also known as desert varnish or desert draperies). This site sits in an enormous alcove and would have protected at least 20 rooms or more. Evidence of more rooms is present in front of the alcove, suggesting this site had several different components to it. Unfortunately, easy access and close proximity to the nearest town, it has become a local party spot. When we showed up, a recent fire was still smoldering in the middle of the alcove. What little remains of the old Anasazi Inn and restaurant on Marsh Pass, just west of Kayenta, Arizona. It was a funky pit stop for both locals and tourists alike in its day before burning to the ground in 2016. Located on the edge of Tsegi Canyon, one can look across and see the foundation of a prehistoric cliff dwelling clinging to the cliff face under a shallow alcove. Tsegi Canyon is home to several important archaeological sites, including both Betatakin and Keet Seel which are the main attractions at Navajo National Monument, as well as Sunflower Cave, where in the early 20th century, archaelogists A.V. Kidder and Samuel Gurnsey uncovered a spectacular cache of 26 painted wooden sunflowers, two painted hide sunflowers, 26 wooden cones, and one painted wooden bird, all carefully placed in an upside down corrugated pot. Oral stories from the Flute Clan at Hopi were able to identify these objects without having seen the caches, and they have since been returned to the Flute Clan and have been repatriated. Was amazed and relieved to find a very undisturbed #sinaguacliffdwelling this past weekend in an area I did not expect. Between 1939 and 1945, the Royal Canadian Air Force enlisted 232,000 men and 17,000 women and operated 86 squadrons, including 47 overseas. Canadians flew bomber, fighter, reconnaissance, transport, and other missions around the world. Tens of thousands of Canadian air crew also served with Britainâs Royal Air Force and Canadian fighter aircraft participated in the epic Battle of Britain in 1940. For the rest of the war, Canadian fighter-bombers attacked coastal areas in German-occupied Europe while Canadian heavy bombers struck at targets much further inland. In addition, Canadian maritime patrol bombers based in Canada, Newfoundland, Iceland and Britain fought German submarines. By 1945, the R.C.A.F. had grown to be the worldâs fourth- largest air force.
