I love visiting this little guy on campus. For those who donโt know, Iโm re engaging with school for a degree in psychology. The work is amazing so far โ and completely time consuming! We are working in a hybrid manner - classes in person and in-between online. Itโs a nice balance that allows us to still manage a job and family. But itโs still a lot of work and Iโm having to re-learn how to balance me time and everything else. There is something wonderfully liminal about the beach. It doesn't matter if I'm in the water, on the sand, or walking along the boardwalk. We recently took a week for a "Workcation" to Florida. We visited the beach every day, and got some early morning swimming (well really standing in the shallow water) in. I love the beach - where land, sea, and sky all meet. Where we are at the whims of Nature and where we can be us. Hot sand beneath our feet, moving into cool sand then water. Waves playing around our toes and ankles, then calves, thighs and hips as we wade deeper and deeper. Then the waves that crash into us, sometimes filling our faces with water, sometimes crashing over or under us. Surrounded and supported by water, and knowing that we still need to watch out and take care - the Sea is more powerful than any of us. One of my favourite parts of City Magick is working the side alleys. Streets are the veins, alleys are the capillaries. Connecting the vital arteries, carrying the city energy through a non obvious way. This forgotten blocked bridge marked with โ1925โ year used to be a part of a big shopping centre, later adjusted to become a fully reconstructed part of the hotel โteavelodgeโ. Now itโs an empty premises, still bearing a city magick value. Bridges have a magical power of โcrossingโ from one stage of your life into another. Mixed with the power of a side alley - secret and hidden action. Here, at the forgotten but energetically active side alley bridge you can make significant changes to your life, leaving whatever needs to be left behind on one side of a bridge crossing to another with a new intention. I donโt update my altars very often, so I thought that Iโd share it when I did this time. Iโve got Spring and Summer flowers draped along the wall to the back of the altar, my lovely cauldron, a votive candle, a bowl for offerings, The statues are of Cerridwen, and Grandpa Jachabo (a spirit I work with). The tree at the back is the Lego Bonsai Tree with the green leaves setup. I like fairly simple and small altars. This one is about 12โ square. My altars tend not to be working spaces. I have a desk right next to the altar where I lay out the cards or do crystal grids or such. I do enjoy candle spells so those go on the altar. Your altar can be whatever you want to make of it. Some folks like big and fancy altars, others have a few photos on a wall, and yet others may only have a single rock or symbol in a special place. It's taken me a while to know what to say beyond WTF!!!!โ โ So three breaths I give to you,โ โ One breath for the people of the Ukraine who are dealing with the insane attack of a madman. A man who puts their very lives in danger for no reason other than where they live. For a people who fight for their freedom and their lives - with their leadership fighting alongside them all.โ โ One breath for the people of Texas, who deal with their own form of madmen who think that they know what is best for children - better even that their parents, their doctors, their psychologists, and a whole host of scientists. For madmen who put peoples lives in danger for no reason other than who they are. โ โ One breath for all of us who are dealing with the insanity that is our world these days. One breath for a moment to think, for a moment to breathe, before we go back into the insanity.โ โ Many parts of me wish for peace, but parts of me also wish for these madmen to be ignored - but I know that won't happened. โ โ Our world is insane right now. We spent the day getting to know our new city, including going inside the church where Martin Luther King Jr. spoke (twice!) and learning of the terrible history that drove the Chinese immigrants out of the area. We need to remember our history so we can repeat the useful bits and avoid the harmful bits. โ โ This area has had a combination of a great and dark past. Soโฆ..Publishing a book about City Witchery when every other popular book in my category is about green or herbal magic has been quite the eye opener. We are not opposites, tho itโs marketed that way, and that sort of sucks. It makes people feel that there is only one approach. One right way. Binaries. This or that. Nature or the man-made. Pure or dirty. There is a liminal space, a merging, a connectedness. We donโt need to fetishize or reduce one or the other! So many people have told me my book applies to them even if theyโre not in a big city, which I love. (And as a city dweller myself, my herbology & greenery books apply too โ although I have to create some workarounds). You can find the sacred in any space but, yes, the pathway may look different. (And nature isnโt off the table at all!). I have had to say, โhey this POV matters tooโ when so much content makes you feel that you need access to great nature to tap into your magic. You are already magical. Cities are just big wild living and breathing energy centers where it takes a different set of eyes to find your way. And it is so worthwhile. My book finds its people, though. Even tho itโs not as popular as other books that are more nature - based, I know it speaks to people and I believe it matters that we have a variety of viewpoints. If you like cities, are secular, & want to create your own practice, my book(s) is for you! And FWIW everything is nature. You are. The sky above us is. That which exists under the materials beneath our feet. The flame in the windowsill. The fire escape plants. The local flora we ignore. The sacred dandelions in the sidewalk. Itโs all there. And btw, this is not a knock on those other books. I own, work with, and adore those books. I have learned so much about herbs and plants and not killing the green friends I keep in my home. About healing and matriarchy and folk magic and spirit. I love them.
