New Leaf Prep Academy Upper Elementary students (grades 4-6) chose to visit the Oneida Nation Museum as their studio-planned, interest-driven field trip! They had the opportunity to see and engage in rich Oneida history throughout the museum and got to make their own corn husk “dolls” after learning the history around them. Museum curators also took our students on a hike into the woods and shared plants coming up this spring that are native to the area and how they are used as edible/herbal medicines within the Oneida culture. Today I had the chance to relax in the park - Knapp Heritage Park that is! Together, UTA Museum Studies and the Arlington Historical Society hosted a mini Pioneer Days event for the community. It was beautiful weather and so much fun! 😀 Out front, AHS members Wanda, Geraldine, and Sandra taught about cornhusk dolls. My students Manny Winchester and Zach Chapman dressed in historical costume and led tours of each cabin for citizens of all ages as part of their Living History curriculum training. In the schoolhouse, Libby Morse helped to teach about homemade butter-making and loop and hook loom weaving while I spoke to the community about the lives of teachers and students in the late 19th and early 20th centuries. With just scraps of cloth, string, yarn and sticks, the possibilities for accessorizing the dollies to celebrate every season are almost endless! Merry Christmas! My mom made corn husk dolls for her nativity scene. The practice of making corn husk dolls experienced a revival in the 1970s, along with other craft activities. Though she made the whole@nativity these are all that are left. And a wonderful small vignette for the bookcases. Corn husk dolls were once considered children’s toys, but were also used by our Native American sisters in healing ceremonies and to ward off evil spirits. WEEKEND IN BEREA, the Appalachian crafts mecca that's home to the first higher learning institution to accept Black and women students in Kentucky! Top row: Portraits of notable alumni Julia Britton Hooks and Carter G. Woodson hang in the parlor of Berea College's historic Boone Tavern. Hooks was a musical prodigy who mentored W.C. Handy and became the first Black woman to attend college in Kentucky in the 1870s. Woodson was a pioneering historian known Father of Black History. The campus is quite bucolic, with troubadours giving impromptu concerts on the lawn (middle right). Middle rows: Scenes from Berea's famous Artisan Village. The corn husk crane is in the tradition of Appalachian corn husk dolls and made by Mary E. Comer of Weaver's Bottom Craft Studio. Mary and her husband have operated the craft shop for over thirty years! If you go visit you can watch her make corn husk dolls, but don't forget to ask for a dulcimer demonstration. She's got a one-of-a-kind antique dulcimer from mid-1800s and her ethereal performances are one-of-a-kind too. Bottom row: The first and last squares feature art for sale at the Kentucky Artisan Center, which is like a giant mall for Appalachian crafts! The woodcarving (bottom left) is by Kentucky's premiere Black folk artist LaVon Van Williams. 🍂 Happy Friday! 🍁 As we wrap up our fall break, Circle students got creative and crafted these beautiful dolls using a twist on tradition. Instead of corn husks, we used vibrant crepe paper to add a burst of color to our autumn celebrations. 🌽💡 Corn husk dolls have a rich history in Native American and early American cultures. Traditionally, they were made from the dried husks of corn, a staple crop in many communities. These dolls were not only a form of art but also held cultural and spiritual significance. 🌽✨ Happy Indigenous People's Day! 🌾 We celebrated the rich heritage of indigenous cultures by making traditional corn husk dolls in honor of this US holiday. These dolls are not just beautiful pieces of art but also hold deep cultural significance. 🧡 Corn husk doll making has been a cherished tradition among indigenous tribes in the United States for centuries. It has been passed down through generations, connecting indigenous cultures to their ancestors and the land. The dolls were often used for storytelling, rituals, and as toys for children. They symbolize the importance of corn in indigenous agriculture and its role as a life-sustaining crop. 🌽✨ While we did this craft, I told my child and a few of our homeschooling friends the traditional Cherokee story of why the Corn Husk Doll has no face. It’s a wonderful, rhythmic story to tell, and the children just loved it. Creating these dolls has been a wonderful way to help our children honor and preserve the vibrant traditions of indigenous communities.
