What an event FULL week! Thank you to everyone who donated, helped organize, or took part in VeggiEclipse and The People’s Harvest this past week. Not to mention EcoFest in between! It has been so joyful and lively at the garden again recently. It’s bittersweet to wrap up the season, but we couldn’t have ended things on a better note. Lots and lots of love to our 490 special events committee, our fellow organizers at @seacrochester, @fruition_seeds, @goodwill_flx , @taprootcollectiveroc, @monroeccextension, to @heartthrobstringband, and all the individuals who made this week what it was. STRANGE SUCCESS Story Everyone has a dream. Pumpkins grown to look like people's heads? Whaaaa? Who thinks these things up? Tony Dighera, an organic farmer from California, had a dream to grow pumpkins into shapes. @cinagro_farms (Cinagro is "organic" spelled backward) is an innovative sustainable organic farm located in the Santa Clara valley in Ventura County, California. This unusual shape is achieved by carefully placing a mold around the pumpkin during the early stages of growth. The whole process taking about five weeks. Coined as "Pumpkinsteins," these real pumpkins freakishly resemble Frankenstein. My kids and I just happened upon them at our local Sam's Club. And they were on clearance. So we bought three! Ours were a mere $5 each, not the regular $25 price. Have you heard about the Pumpkinsteins? Honestly, at first glance I said, "Oh, these pumpkins are rotten!" Then looking twice, I had to pick them up when I realized they were faces! Even in the growing process of these unique pumpkins there have been failures that have turned into successes. (Can you relate with that?) Some workers didn't securely lock both sides of a mold together, and the back fell off. What remained was a pumpkin with a Frankenstein face surrounded by a cloud of orange. (This is the kind that we bought) It was such a hit that Dighera started doing that on purpose! Great things can come from mistakes! 👉 How are you setting yourself apart? On that note: He might even try to do something with Pumpkinsteins that exploded inside molds during a massive heat wave. "They literally explode," he said. "You'll be on the other side of the field, and you'll hear it." The result is a pumpkin that looks like Frankenstein as a zombie. Can you imagine? The beastly giant has become the face of pumpkins planted here...a mad creation called Pumpkinstein!
