I am on my ancestral land in the middle of a dry river bed. The Spanish and Mexican called this body of water the Santa Ana River after the earthquake that happened when they first tried to cross in 1769 on St Anne’s feast day patrontress saint of Grandmothers and horseback riders. The native people, the Tongva or Kizh called the river Wanaawna. I’m here to feel in my bones and blood the maternal line, ghosts of Christmas past, for the paranormal historical fiction that is my next book. I brought the book Magic in your Genes by @iamcairelle Cairelle Crow to help me with ritual to open that portal. I flipped open the book, such a fan of bibliomancy. I landed on a page for a ritual to acknowledge the end of the mother line. From this hotel room, I’m looking out at the hills at my mothers mothers mothers have roamed for over 200 years here in the middle of Orange County California. We had a family Rancho of 62,000 acres. This River used to flood and so I’m here to ask questions. The ritual calls for Kunzite which I didn’t have so I held up a picture of the crystal and called it in like we would any Goddess or herbal ally as I honored and named ten grandmothers. Most of them born and raised on this land. The other mothers are from royal presidios in Mexico, going back 7,000 years to Jalisco. I am there last daughter of my line. I birthed sons and my sisters had daughters so the matriarch will continue. How did I know I would find the perfect ritual? Life ain’t so bad... right? 💕☺️💕 I barely know what I’m doing in this world day-to-day. I’ve learned to meet the day where it wants to be met. But *being* in this world, well... *that* is *endlessly* eventful. I feel everything. I need breaks + hugs + deep conversations often. I need hours to #daydream each day. And... I’ll tell you what... I sing and dance as much as humanly possible. Especially when I’m happy. I enjoy myself as best I can. Why? Well... what else am I to do...? For those who don’t know me... Letting go of a lot this week, a lot of things I based my whole life around, lies I told myself, people that brought me security and reassurance. I’m being shook to the core. I can’t make life work without other people, without my community....I need people. It’s taken a long time for me to see that and cultivate it. But I also don’t need to become anyone, there is no magic person with all the answers for me. There is just the beauty that I can create right here and now. There is the endless creative river that flows through me that I can use to make beautiful things and to serve my community. No one can give me that, but I can share it with others. I’ve been pretty messed up these last few weeks, but I can forgive myself, and understand, and keep going down the path I am on. A detail from a new project I started last night. Mixed media. 27 stitches to mark where healing has happened and is happening, 9 marks to count important days, the color pink for many reasons, gold glittering paint, yellowed tracing paper, secrets, photos, heart, hear, he, h, gesso, glossy gel medium ( a favorite ), oil pastels, calligraphy pen and blood red ink (always),words that made my knees buckle, daydreams and vulnerable open heartedness. This will become a panel of 4 stitched together hearts. I'll share more bits as I go. It's part of my ongoing series called 'Chasing the Fog :: Learning how to Breathe'. I can't limit my expression to one medium. And so I don't. It took me a while of circling the airport to finally start this piece as I haven't worked in this way for a while and I put some pressure on myself because I want it in the solo show I'm having. Putting that on top of the act of creation pretty much kills it. I had to jump full on into this without my perfectionism running the show. I love getting my hands dirty...losing track of time and getting so lost within the process that's happening right in the moment. Right here. Once I start I don't want to stop. I fall deep in love with the conversation between me, the materials and the space in between the words and stories. This dance feeds my soul and as I post this I long to dive back in for more. Tonight Max gets home in 30 minutes and I left all the art supplies out. The next panel will be a collaborative piece I'm pretty sure.... Looking forward to seeing his marks and his expression. I can't wait to see my heart enter our home.
