Journey West highlights photographs of the Civil Rights Movement, the Chicago Outlaws Motorcycle Club, and the Texas prison system. Do you still talk to them? I do. At graveside, where I think they can hear me best, I catch them up on what I know of happenings since we last spoke. My dog still joins me on hikes, so we talk a a lot there. I know he would love every hike I go on, though I still find myself apologizing for hot or sharp rocks or long stretches of heat without shade, or getting excited for him when a nice deep creek or lake presents itself because he loved so much to swim. They can still hear you, you know. Virtually every belief system has space carved out for a relationship with the dead. And even if you have no relationship to religion or faith, psychology backs up saying the unsaid aloud or in letter form to those no longer present in our lives, to keep necessary conversations going depite the absence of one party or more. It’s fascinating to think that American inventor Thomas Edison very much believed in the possibility that new recording devices could offer a way in which to contact the dead. Others believed that people somehow moved onto radio waves after their deaths. So, it’s with this in mind that I picked up this new publication - “Friedel's Conversations with the Dead: The Fascinating Story of Friedrich Jürgenson, Pioneer of EVP.” Jürgensen (1903-1987) was a painter, archaeologist, and former opera singer living in Sweden, who found traces of extra voices on tapes with which he was trying to record birdsongs. EVP or Electronic Voice Phenomena suggested that deceased people appear to be able to make contact with the physical world utilising electronic devices such as radios, tape recorders, computers and televisions. Over the years, Jürgensen made thousands of recordings of the voices of the dead, ranging from his family and friends to people such as Vincent van Gogh and Himmler’s masseur. Yes, really. Mike Harding, with whom I set up the label Ash International in the early 1990s, later went on to release this amazing CD ‘Friedrich Jürgensen: From the Studio for Audioscopic Research.’ This new publication is the first book to tell Jürgensen’s story. Though it’s easy to be sceptical, I’m sure it’s going to be a curious story. He went on to be the star of Sweden’s version of the TV show “Here is Your Life”, and the subject of a film and several documentaries in Europe, and was even a regular guest at the Vatican and directed excavations in Pompeii. Long before digital cameras and mobile phones all we had was film. Take a picture, scroll to the next frame on the film, take another shot. We had no idea what are pictures looked like until we got them back from the developer. I first picked up an "proper" camera when I was 16. I was told by my art teacher at the time that I should try photography as my "art wasn't appropriate". Side Note: it still isn't *lol* I was given an old Olympic and told to leave class and begin shooting. My first ever "shoot" was the old graveyard near my school. I would spend hours spending my time with the dead, taking photographs and just learning what and how things work. From there I was introduced to the dark room. I developed my film, the photographs themselves. The smell of the chemicals to this day make me smile. The last two years of high school were spent in that darkroom. Eventually over time, with practice, travel, life experiences, my photography grew and changed. Decades later it is still changing. Seems like a lifetime ago that I was washed in the soft breezes of St.Augustine, climbing the steps of this beautiful lighthouse. I’ve been finding myself thinking about this time in my life, before I migrated across the country. Everything was filled with uncertainty and possibility; and I threw myself into my travels, my writing, my most personal Work. I remember standing on top of this beacon with views for miles around, looking out over my future as it unfurled in front of me. The oldest city in the country was a wonderful place to begin- the ghosts of Saint Augustine gave me stories and blessings that carried me 3,000 miles (and counting). This lighthouse is filled with the spirits of its keepers- forlorn and protective energies seeping from its rounded walls. Their presence was palpable, but silent. It was in the basement of the keeper’s house that I heard the whispers. Danny Lyon - Conversations with the Dead exhibition catalogue from Rice University in Houston dated 1970. Sticking with the them of being imprisoned at home. I'm not complaining - it's just having an impact on my thinking : ). I purchased this catalogue for $30 at the SF Art Book Fair and likely will never see one again. I'm shocked this has survived being just 8 pages stapled together. It has the same intro from Billy McCune as the published book of photographs of the insides of Texas prisons in the late '60s. Somehow, Danny Lyon got permission to take pictures inside all of the state prisons in TX. He formed a friendship with one of the inmates, Billy McCune. Billy was a loser--he came from a broken home, was kicked out of the navy and was convicted of raping a women in Waco. He had been kept in a home for the retarded and was held in the psychotic section of the highest security prison. Nevertheless, his writing is incredibly good, and his drawings are okay. I had the privilege of attending a week long workshop with a master micaceous clay potter. He was a two spirit (male and female) Jicarilla Apache shaman who used mica rich clay from a 400 year old clay dig on a reservation in La Madera, New Mexico. His studio is called Owl Peak. He gave classes of the traditional ways of making clay pots, and he cooked us meals using those pots, and he lead us through prayers and rituals, sweat lodge, fasting, and cleansing. A remarkable talented man who has since passed away. His work has been collected by the Smithsonian. He told me Nanda requested this pot. I hadn’t mentioned my son to him. When I told him I felt honored he told me that the pot wasn’t for me. I appreciated his directness. He told me he could lead me through to talking with my son but the ceremony would be too taxing for me as I had cancer at the time. I intended to go to him when I was well enough. Unfortunately I was never able to go back for other obligations and reasons. There are other guides I have met which I can, when I feel the time is right, can take me to the other world. I have a giant canvas that I’ve been literally dreaming of painting for months. My mom visits me in these dreams and I can see her and the painting so clearly.
