I’m so looking forward to the second meeting of our Women’s Group tomorrow. ⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀ It feels like such an apt time to be gathering as the Celtic wheel turns and we enter the season of Imbolc (1 Feb). The wheel is a ritual calendar handed down from our Celtic ancestors and rooted in the rhythms of nature. This is the time where nature awakens slowly, daylight lengthens and new beginnings emerge. ⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀ @marikennedywisdom has a beautiful offering and community to explore and deepen our understanding and connection to these ancient rhythms - writings, rituals, wisdom and embodied practices. They are words told by Vasilisa’s doll to Vasilisa, a beautiful story which I told and we discussed as part of the Baba Yaga series. When the darkness of the night prevails, we need the light of the morning when somehow there is new found hope. There is such incredible wisdom in oral stories. Such gems, such riches that people have lived by for millennia. There is something special about hearing the wisdoms in the story, somehow reading them isn’t just quite sufficient. This is why stories are told, and not read! And hurray for the storytellers that tell them! Gertrud Muller Nelson writes in “Here All Dwell Free” that according to her daughter, myths and fairytales are “stories that aren’t true on the outside but are true on the inside”. I love this description and often work with fairytales as a way for people to understand and map their own personal story. We did just this in our Women’s Group last week with the Russian fairytale of Vasilisa the Wise. I chose it as a story of a woman’s initiation. In the tale there are nine tasks that the young girl must complete in order to survive and fully become herself. In Women Who Run with the Wolves, Clarissa Pinkola Estes writes in detail about each of the tasks and how we might complete them in life. These are: ~ Allowing the too good mother to die (separation from the protective mother) ~ Exposing and experiencing one’s own crude shadow ~ Navigating in the dark (heading back to the Wild mother) ~ Facing the wild hag ~ Serving the wild hag and getting used to the wild powers of the feminine psyche ~ Separating this from that ~ Asking the mysteries to find out more about wild nature ~ Taking on immense power ~ Recognising and reacting to the negative aspects of our own shadow We sat in circle and let the story infuse us. Then we began to explore the tasks that felt most relevant for each of us, asking questions of the story and of ourselves and revealing images and ideas that were raw and remembered. ❄️It’s Cold❄️ Currently Reading: THE GIRL IN THE TOWER by @arden_katherine. Words cannot express how much I love this series. I have been savoring these books and only reading them in the coldest parts of the year. In her book WINTERING, @katherinemay_ talks about the hold that winter (and especially snow) has over our imagination and why so many fairy tales use this as way to indicate that we as readers are following the characters into a magical and other place. I acknowledge that in a place where our coldest months are relatively mild it is easy for the charms of winter to have a seductive hold over me, but perhaps romanticizing the harsh realities of this season is the only way to survive it. In the Russian fairytale, Vasilisa the Wise, a young girl is sent by her wicked stepmother to get a light for the fire from Baba Yaga, an evil witch living in the house on chicken legs in the middle of the forest. The witch’s reputation is such that the stepmother doesn’t imagine that Vasilisa will return alive. When she meets Baba Yaga, the witch sets her almost impossible tasks, one of which is to sort the black bits out of the seed pile. As Vasilisa despairs. help mysteriously arrives and she is able to sort the seeds and complete the task. ⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀ One interpretation of this tale is that the seeds represent potential. And that the task of sorting them is the heroine’s initiation of sorting what is her and what is not her, in the face of elders who don’t believe in her. For we have to find what we essentially are, in order to know where we belong. In honor of International Women’s Day, I thought I’d share some of my favorite lady characters from Slavic tales! 💃🏼 Marya Morevna- the warrior queen capable of slaying just about any man who gets in her way. But she’s also a lover— falling for Ivan— a brave, yet sometimes bumbling guy who is too curious for his own good. One day he accidentally frees Koschei the Deathless(the evil immortal menace) who Marya has captured and chained up in her dungeon. Marya and Koschei seem to get in this endless loop of trying to capture and dominate the other, so he of course whisks her away, Ivan needs the help of Baba Yaga to save Marya, and chaos ensues. 💃🏼 The Finist Falcon’s Bride- a pretty girl acquires the magic feather of Finist the Falcon, the handsome prince who shape-shifts into a falcon and visits her every night, bringing with him all sorts of gifts— clothes, jewelry, etc., for her to wear. She delights in showing up dressed beyond recognition to public places and fooling her entire family and village, but she always disappears just in time to change and hide all of her gifts before her family gets home and realizes. One day though, she accidentally forgets to remove a diamond hair pin from her hair. Her jealous sisters catch on, and concoct an evil plan by sticking all kinds of needles, nails and shards of glass into her window frame. Finist tries to visit that night, but injures himself and flies away. The girl must then find Baba Yaga(who sometimes appears as three witches in this tale) for advice on how to find the prince again. 💃🏼 Vasilisa The Wise- beautiful but also wise and skilled in magic. Her father, a Tsar and sorcerer, didn’t appreciate this, and feared she was smarter than he. So he turns her into a frog for three years, and promises her to Koschei the Deathless if she disobeys him when she returns to her human form. Another Tsar is annoyed by his three sons who are still single, and he forces them to shoot an arrow into the sky, and pick a bride from wherever their arrows land. One son’s arrow lands in a swamp next to a frog(Vasilisa), and because of her wit and skills in magic, he realizes it is no ordinary frog! 💃🏼 ⬇️

This particular quote is highlighting the symbolism and meaning behind meeting Baba Yaga in the famous fairy tale "Vasilisa the Wise/Beautiful/Fair". . . This quote really struck me. In the story, Vasilisa undergoes the impossible and dangerous task of braving the dark woods and asking Baba Yaga for fire. Although she is scared, she is able to stand up to the feared witch and and ask for what she needs. Furthermore, she dwells in Baba Yaga's hut for days undergoing tasks to earn her fire. . Baba Yaga is the perfect archetype to embody the wild, natural aspect of ourselves. The creature that does what she wants, when she wants. Someone who is in tune with nature and who beats to the rhythm of her own drum. She is powerful, feared, and respected for good reason. She is dangerous. There is a piece of her in all of us. . To get in touch with our Baba Yaga, like Vasilisa did, and to be able to stand her, is how we learn to carry our own inner flame towards a path of potential vs destruction. . In other words, only by meeting that feared aspect of ourselves head on and working with it vs against it are we able to wield power from that same source for good.

An illustration for #folktaleweek2021 , it's a week long challenge around the theme of folktales. The first prompt is 'Moon'. I've been inspired by the tale of Vasilisa the Wise, as told in the book "Women who run with the Wolves", by C. Pinkola. This book is about the wild woman archetype from the Jungian perspective (it's great, i recommend it a lot!). The story of Vasilisa is about a girl who has a magic doll that looks like her and helps her on her journey to the Baba Yaga hut and back. Her task was to get some fire from the witch and bring it home- Vasylisa was supposed to fail and die on the way, but with a help of the doll she managed. The doll is a representation of inner intuition and a voice that helps even if one thinks all is futile. Vasilisa is the heroine of Russian folklore, where as a rule after difficult trials the heroes are rewarded. The reward is always individual. Vasilisa has her own reward: the skull with luminous eye sockets symbolizes insight, clarity that sheds light on everything that is secret and hidden. It's like to wake up and smell the coffee, to become undeceived. The owl symbolizes intuition, wisdom. The little doll means intuition. Her eyes are bandaged, but her feeling is keen. Way Shower Ancestor Doll . This Ancestor Doll was inspired by a fairy tale course I recently finished with the wonderful Michelle Tocher, working with the story Vasilisa the Wise. The wisdom she holds was earned through her encounter with Baba Yaga, and yet she is Vasilisa in her later years, having fully grown into her wisdom through many life experiences. . In her belly is Mugwort, Wild Rose and Blue Vervain, as well as a lock of my hair; her shawl is a family heirloom inherited from my mother's sister who lived until she was 96; and the markings on her torso and face are a tattoo reminder of her initiation into the ways of the wise woman. . After not knowing what to post for so many days (weeks?) this image kept peering out at me as if whispering in an old Slavonic tongue, “Post me! Post me!” I couldn’t for the life of me figure out why this image stood out so starkly in my mind, or why dear readers I’ve been called to post it here. But here it is. This is Vasilisa the Beautiful (or, Vasilisa the Wise) approaching the chicken-legged hut of the formidable Baba Yaga. It’s not a story I am too familiar with but I remember my older sister playing the role of Baba Yaga and ordering me to sweep the floors as a child. It was a fun little game we played (if not a bit cruel, but childhood is like that). Within my own heart I find the archetypal “ugly witch” and archetypal “beautiful young woman” intertwined in play. I am both the beautiful and wise Vasilisa, and the horrible and angry Baba Yaga. I find cruelty and kindness within myself in the same breath. I think fairytales show us aspects of ourselves, like a magnifying glass, to the battle of Good and Evil within us all. In honor of International Women’s Day, I thought I’d share some of my favorite lady characters from Slavic tales! 💃🏼 Marya Morevna- the warrior queen capable of slaying just about any man who gets in her way. But she’s also a lover— falling for Ivan— a brave, yet sometimes bumbling guy who is too curious for his own good. One day he accidentally frees Koschei the Deathless(the evil immortal menace) who Marya has captured and chained up in her dungeon. Marya and Koschei seem to get in this endless loop of trying to capture and dominate the other, so he of course whisks her away, Ivan needs the help of Baba Yaga to save Marya, and chaos ensues. 💃🏼 The Finist Falcon’s Bride- a pretty girl acquires the magic feather of Finist the Falcon, the handsome prince who shape-shifts into a falcon and visits her every night, bringing with him all sorts of gifts— clothes, jewelry, etc., for her to wear. She delights in showing up dressed beyond recognition to public places and fooling her entire family and village, but she always disappears just in time to change and hide all of her gifts before her family gets home and realizes. One day though, she accidentally forgets to remove a diamond hair pin from her hair. Her jealous sisters catch on, and concoct an evil plan by sticking all kinds of needles, nails and shards of glass into her window frame. Finist tries to visit that night, but injures himself and flies away. The girl must then find Baba Yaga(who sometimes appears as three witches in this tale) for advice on how to find the prince again. 💃🏼 Vasilisa The Wise- beautiful but also wise AND skilled in magic. Her father, a Tsar and sorcerer, didn’t appreciate this, and feared she was smarter. So he turns her into a frog for three years, and promises her to Koschei the Deathless if she disobeys him when she returns to her human form. Another Tsar is annoyed by his three sons who are still single, and he forces them to shoot an arrow into the sky, and pick a bride from wherever their arrows land. One son’s arrow lands in a swamp next to a frog(Vasilisa), and because of her wit and skills in magic, he realizes this is no ordinary frog! 💃🏼 ⬇️
