In the last month I’ve turned 30, gone to Spain, and finished a PhD. You may call me doctor! Starting off trip photos with an owl seems fitting. Here’s a Little Owl, called mochuelo in Spain. This species is related to the Burrowing Owl and is widespread across the Old World, as their cousins are in the New. They inhabit open areas including rocky, open woodlands where I saw them in Spain—first spotted by non-birder friend @wild_watson, which seems to always be how it works 😆.
Not every #Arab or all #SWANA folx are #Muslim. I’m a #Buddhist for example. Well…There’s a little bit more to it, with certain Sufi mysticism, but we will get into it later. I learned a significant number of SWANA dances as a pre-teen, eventually taught & performed #Türkish #Romany #Oyun #Havasi #Dance for years. Starting around the same time learning fusion Bollywood dance styles from friends who immigrated from New Delhi & Sri Lanka. Among many other styles, in my teens I learned Lebanese Raqs Baladi & Raqs Sharqi & Debke, from native Lebanese & Egyptian folx. I’m curious…Did you notice how many Arabi femmes/Thems we are seeing, who don’t wear hijab or other hair coverings? Like many choose to do….In the past I’d wear a loose draped scarf to gatherings, out of respect for Muslim hosts. It’s just good #etiquette when in someone’s home or gathering. You show they & theirs respect. Fluency in spoken #Arabic is not a measurement of heritage either. A lot of SWANA folx around the world, in the Diaspora… Not all of us were lucky enough to grow up around the family who could have taught me. They passed away when I was a little. The only other heritage I’ll mention, is Romanian and of the Roma/Romani/Romany people, who actually originate from Rajasthan, India. But I’ve even experienced Muslims heavily discriminate against the Roma. 🤷 So 🤷 Add in my being #Queer & #GenderNonconforming ? All of these factors are where a lot of exclusion & b*llying is happening & directed my way, just for existing. I’ve been speaking about it like I do other things. I never experienced this weird social stuff anywhere I traveled to perform or where I was born & raised in the South, before I moved here. I was sad to not see a culturally rich dance community here when I moved 10 years ago. I was coming from a Giant worldwide #Arabi , #FarEast , SWANA Dance Community. Everyone always warmly & enthusiastically welcomed everyone. 👩 The "Lady of Elche" or "Lady of Elx" is a masterpiece of ancient Iberian culture. Carved in the round, the sculpture represents a woman with an idealized face, richly garbed and bejeweled. Made of limestone in the late 5th-early 4th century BCE, the "Lady of Elche" was originally polychromed and the eyes were filled with vitreous paste. Numerous theories of authorship exist, but today most believe that an Iberian commissioned it from a sculptor who was Greek or trained in Greek workshops. The "Lady of Elche" was discovered by chance at the archaeological site of La Alcudia, near the town of Elche, Spain and soon after was sold to the Musée du Louvre in Paris. It was displayed there until 1941, when the French and Spanish governments negotiated its return to Spain. The singular nature of this sculpture has made it an icon of Iberian archaeology. Numerous hypotehses have been posited about the aperture at the back and its possible fuction: as a slot to accomodate a bracket for atttaching the bust to the wall; as a reliquary; and— the most widely accepted—as a possible funerary urn. The lady's identity is a mystery but she is attributed both a human and divine nature. this was especially fun because we lost power 20 mins into dinner and it stayed blackout pretty much the entire time. then the power guys came to try and fix it. anyway. it ended up being one of the best meals in #barcelona. the #iberian pork was so good we almost ordered two, the #mussels were creamy and melty and the #bravas had me licking the plate. so not miss this place and bring a flashlight, just in case. @bardelpla just so, so good. wow.

Red Shield Bug - Carpocoris mediterraneus ssp. atlanticus So far, I seen only a handful of shieldbugs since being in Spain and usually when I don't have the camera with me. However yesterday morning close by the banks of the Rio Serpis river, found a single adult shieldbug on an isolated plant.
