If you’re in your 1st or 2nd year of business, here are 3 important things you want to prioritise: 1️⃣ Cash flow: No matter what type of business you run, you need some level of cash flow to keep things going. This may be for inventory or human resources or marketing. Whatever kind of investment your business needs to grow. No matter what your profit looks like on paper, if that money does not get in your bank and quickly, your business will struggle to see any growth. 2️⃣ Documentation: At the early stages of your business, there’s going to be a lot of trying things out to see what works best for you. This may be trying to understand your dream clients, testing out different content types and even the kind of support system you need. You can make this process 10x more productive by documenting your processes. All that information will help you make more informed decisions and make it so much easier for anyone working with you to understand how best to support you. 3️⃣ Be kind to yourself This may seem like a no-brainer but I know how tasking the first couple of years can be. It doesn’t help if you’re always beating yourself up for every little setback or everything that doesn’t work your way. For a lot of business owners, this may be the time they struggle with money the most…because they’re desperately trying to get their business off the ground and make some kind of profit. Be kind to yourself, acknowledge all of your wins and achievements and give your business time to grow. Don’t fall into the comparison trap or start to look down on your business because it doesn’t compare to someone else’s. 4 practical tips to stop comparing yourself to others 👇 1️⃣ Stop following anyone who triggers you! I now only follow my friends in the industry and those I look up to as inspiration, and it has made such a difference to my scroll! 2️⃣ Spend time with those who support you and will lift you up. 3️⃣ Don’t compare your chapter 1 to someone else’s chapter 20! You don’t always know the full story and where they are on their journey. You each have your own journey and you may have more chapters than others before you reach the end destination! 4️⃣ Keep an achievement journal – set time aside each week to write down all your achievements in the week (before you forget), so it’s easy to go look at your achievements when you need that boost! When you’re having a moment, go and have a look at your achievements to remind yourself of everything you have accomplished so far to give yourself a boost. Start by writing this down in simple terms. Then brainstorm why you think this is important to your potential customers. ✅ Your “why” I’ll be honest, you’re going to have your highs and lows as a business owner. And some days are going to feel more difficult than others. But if you understand your “why”, your purpose and your overall goal for starting your business, it’s going to be a big motivating factor for you to keep going. ✅ Your customers You need an idea of who your customers are. Don’t worry too much about this as you’ll learn more about them as your business progresses. But for a start, you need to have an idea of who these people are. ✅ Marketing and sales strategy No matter how passionate you are about your business, it needs to make money. You don’t need to have the most comprehensive sales strategy, start with the basics. Nobody hustles harder than a woman who doesn’t like asking people for anything. Or a woman who doesn’t have anyone to ask for anything. When I left my abusive relationship over a decade ago, all I had was my boys. I knew I had to do everything I could to create a new and better life for myself, and for them too. I tried working a 9 - 5, but that gave me neither the time nor the funds I needed. And so in April 2013, I started my ACCA journey.  I had completed my AAT qualification back in 2006 – taking my last exams whilst pregnant with my eldest.  And I thought now was the time to take that next step to becoming a Chartered Accountant.  I couldn’t afford tuition fees, so I simply bought the book for the first exam and cracked on!  I self studied in this way for the whole of my course! I remember my abusive partner saying at the time that I’d never qualify – I sure showed him! And did it all by myself! Now I’m a fellow member of the ACCA – It was such a proud moment for me. I don’t always like the thought of “hustling”, but it sure feels like it sometimes. I prefer to call it your “Healing and Growth” journey! Having a full time job and trying to build up my art side hustle at the same time, can sometimes feel like I'm running in a hamster wheel. This is why I stopped aspiring for 3-hour workdays When I first started getting serious about running my own business, my biggest motivation wasn't the money. It was the TIME! I studied computer science at the University and immediately got into a software development career... This means that I was used to the "remote" lifestyle - years before "working from home" became a thing. This is why I loved my "personal time" so much. I loved the idea of being able to "clock in" from the comfort of my home. And spending long nights coding so I could spend my day at a cafe, or the movies if I wanted to. But when it came to business, this "time independence" thing was glamorized at a different level. Everyone kept talking about this 3-hour or 4-hour workday, and for a while, it got in my head. "Learn how to only work 10 hours a week" "Discover the secrets to a 3-hour workday" While it sounds tempting, I've decided that it's not just for me. WHY? Because I love my work - and I have to be honest enough to admit that I can't work for 3 hours a day and accomplish much. At least not yet! Whenever I think of this, I remember the popular saying by the legendary Steve Jobs: "Your work is going to fill a huge part of your life, and the only way to be truly satisfied is to do what YOU believe is great work." I don't like to think of my work as something I have to "run away" from or struggle to leave every day. I like to make it fun enough to want to stay and do great work (But still, clock out at the end of the day 😉) Now I fill my workdays with music, delicious smoothies, and even fun sitcoms playing in the background. I work with the most interesting and fun people - and it's always a joy when I get to see my clients. Missing a self-imposed deadline for a rebrand can be frustrating and disappointing. However, it's important to remember that things don't always go according to plan, and it's okay to be flexible and adjust your expectations as needed. The past few weeks have been non-stop, and instead of pushing into burnout, I've realized it's more important to be kind to myself and recognize that setbacks and delays are a natural part of any creative process. More than anything, I've needed rest and time to "look at the clouds," as my dad says. So I'm okay with missing my early March deadline. It was an unrealistic timeline with wrapping up client work, my 50th birthday, our Anniversary, and a trip next week. I'm taking a balanced and realistic approach to this rebrand and will adjust the timeline to ensure it will be the best and something I'm proud of, not just "getting it done." I hope you use this experience as an opportunity to learn and grow in your own business. If you reflect on why you missed your deadline, you can use those insights to improve your planning and execution in the future. Additionally, take some time to celebrate your progress so far and focus on the bigger picture. Even if it takes a little longer than initially planned, it’s A-OK. First of all, the only difference between you (as an online coach or service provider) and an influencer is your business model - that’s it. ✔ Both parties need to show up online and find their tribe ✔ Both parties need to build engaged communities online Both parties have a business to run and can use social media to make money in their business. 👉 Humans relate to other humans and not just the “soulless” robotics of any business page. Your audience wants to relate to your struggles and experiences. Your audience wants to know that you’re here for them, just as much as they are for you 👉 So it’s really less about who you are “trying to be” and more about “how you are willing to show up” as yourself and sell your offer. 2️⃣ You believe that when you continue to give off value, you eventually run out of it and have nothing else to say. But in reality, you can never really run out of ideas, run out of content, or run out of value. Because every single day is a new experience, every day is a lesson learned and every day is a new milestone reached in your business. 1. What have you learned recently? 2. One of the last things I did while pregnant was host a pop-up event at Madewell for my brand Magill (@magillclothing); less than 48 hours after these photos were taken I had a new baby boy. ⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀ Anyway, it was such a dream to be able to bring my products into a store and brand I have loved for so many years.
