M A T R O N A L I A | 🌼 Bright Freya’s Day Blessings my lovelies ….. On the first of March we celebrate the Goddess as the Mother, the bringer of light and life. Everything from the greenery of spring to young animals and human children. In doing so we celebrate all mothers. m a t r o n a l i a ….. Following the Roman calendar this was the start of the new year. The festival was associated with the dedication of a temple to Juno Lucina circa 268 BCE and where Saturnalia was for the men, this was for the women. ‘Juno the light-bringer’, who brings children into the light, was depicted veiled, with a flower in one hand and a child in the other. This day celebrated motherhood and women in general, when men gave presents to their wives such as of sweets, flowers and jewellery, and children would give gifts to their mothers. Women provided feasts for their female slaves, who were given the day off, where they would participate in rituals at the Juno temple. It is known that they wore their hair loose and no belts or knots in their clothing; all against the dictates of decorum at that time. Here in the 21st Century you can honour the Goddess by decorating your Altar or Sacred Space with spring flowers such as daffodils, primroses, crocuses, violets etc and as many candles as you wish. c r y s t a l s ….. We spent a fun and uplifting afternoon invoking the energy of Imbolc and getting into a knot crafting Brigid’s Crosses (super easy when you get the hang of it)! We also created some beautiful Imbolc Ritual Oils. After sharing some beautiful crystal connections and a channelled meditation we spent time learning more of the history, lore and traditions behind this Sabbat, along with its Goddess, Bridget. Continuing on from last week’s Magickal musings post and as promised, here’s my tried and tested version of a centuries old tradition. A PINE CONE WISHING SPELL is something you can easily incorporate into your Yule traditions at home with the family and costs nothing! p r e p a r a t i o n ….. First up gather your pine cones. Collecting your own cones strengthens the magick, plus it’s a fun family activity on any nature walk. Clean off any surface dirt and insects then place somewhere warm to encourage it to open and evict and guests. y o u w i l l n e e d ….. Strips of paper Gold Pen (gold is the colour of the returning sun) Twine or ribbon Cinnamon Matches/Lighter t h e s p e l l ….. ✩ Working at your Altar (or create a sacred space) centre yourself then take as much time as you need to think about your wishes for the coming year. These could be for yourself or someone else. Write each one on a separate slip of paper in gold ink. ✩ When you’ve done so take a few minutes and hold your hands over them and sending pure energy to empower them. Today we welcome December, the first of the winter months and in Devon it’s a beautiful frosty but sunny start Pine is associated with Pan, god of the Wildwood. Pine’s species means ‘of the woods or forests’. Pan was desperately in love with Pithys, a dryad (wood nymph). Dryads are the wood spirits who dwell in the trees. As well as protecting herds they are friendly to humans as they too have mortal souls. When trees die it is said that soul of the Dryad of that tree is released, hence our deep connection to these ancient beings. Magickally it is known for purification and as a defensive ally as a protection from hexes and to send back spells. A cross made of pine needles placed before the fireplace keeps evil from entering through it. Pine has been used for centuries for blessings and its association with cycles, beginnings, renewal and fertility. Spiritually it aids in healing and growth, bringing inspiration, peace and access to ancient wisdom. Antiviral Pine was burned in sick rooms to strengthen the healing process. Pine needles are high in vitamin C too! Pine connects to the elements of earth, air and fire and the Sabbats of Yule and Beltane. What’s your favourite memory of, or use of pine? For many, 13 is considered an unlucky number. With today being Friday the 13th, and horror movie connotations, I am seeing memes go crazy today – and rightfully so! I love pop culture as much as the next person, but it always makes me laugh; the number 13 is an auspicious number in the Italian/Sicilian traditions. My oldest child was born at 1313, as a matter of fact. My point in writing all this comes down to this: things take on the meaning that we assign them, especially in magick. Good morning my friends! A couple of updates to put out there for you. With it being spooky season, I have reached peak booking, which I am beyond grateful for. Because of this, sometimes I have to turn down clients because I am booked to the max. However, last-minute cancellations and changes cost me time and the ability to service others. I have now started to require a deposit for larger events and parties; thank you to everyone who has rolled with this so beautifully, and understands this need for change! Deposits of course go to the total amount for the event, and at this time are non-refundable if cancellation is within three days of the event, unless there are extenuating circumstances. I’m not a monster, don’t worry, we can reschedule! Deposits are not required for group readings at my space and smaller bookings. I will let you know at the time of scheduling if I am requiring a deposit depending on your needs. Two years ago today, I officially opened my first space. It was such an emotional time, and I look back on it fondly; the opportunity to finally share this practice that I love, meeting new people, and finding a place to call home for a time. Blessed Mabon, friends! Autumn has officially arrived! 🍁🍂🍁 Mabon is a celebration of the second harvest, of the year's hard work and the community's capacity to survive the winter. It is a time for gratitude, not just for the harvest, but for all the sacrifices made for survival along the way. It is both celebratory and solemn, intrinsically linked with the concept of death, the cycles of light and dark, and the necessity of letting go. Activities of this holiday can include purging your home of things that no longer serve you, harvesting from nature or giving business to local farms, and adorning your home in the colors of the season. Yesterday, under that heavy moon, I broke open for a bit. I released the feeling that I owed anything to past people, and caring what ghosts think is fruitless, leaking energy backwards, not forwards. I burned the last symbol of an old hurt, and on multiple papers and herbs released several negative self thoughts. Today is the three hundred and forty first anniversary of the #bidefordwitches so today is the day we remember our sisters. The earliest surviving record of witchcraft in Bideford was back in 1658 concerning Grace Ellyott. After standing trial at Exeter assizes she was acquitted. In 1671 Temperence Lloyd of Bideford was first accused of killing William Herbert by witchcraft but was also acquitted. Then in 1679 she was again accused of practising witchcraft on Anne Fellow. However, after she had been searched and papers filed no further action was taken. In 1610 Bideford had been granted a charter by James I to run their judicial system separately. ‘Sessions of the peace’ could be convened whenever any of the elected Justices were called upon to investigate instances of murder, felonies, sorceries, dark arts and witchcraft. Temperence was arrested again on 1st July 1682 due to a complaint brought against her by Thomas Eastchurch a local shop keeper. After being arrested she was held in the old chapel that used to be at the end of the current medieval bridge. Her body was searched for sign of the witch and she was interrogated by investigators and accusers. After much heresay and purely circumstantial evidence that included a magpie on her windowsill, she was committed to the gaol in Exeter on 8th July to await trial at at assizes. On Tuesday 18 July, Mary Trembles was denounced to the authorities of the town and consequently arrested, together with her companion Susanna Edwards following further superstition and finger pointing. ‘Confessions’ were extracted through bullying, intimidation and withholding food and water etc and they joined Temperence in Exeter Gaol in 19th July. ☀️Blessed Lammas to you all!☀️ In the cool breeze that welcomed a respite from the heat of the past few weeks, today I got to sit in the contemplation of Lammas - one of the deepest "we reap what we sow" holidays in the Witches Wheel. This celebration, also called Lughnasadh, was also a celebration of the Celtic god Lugh, who was an expert craftsman and creator. As a harvest celebration, it shows the first signs of fall, and autumn colors are incorporated into altar spaces and homes. It is also a time to think about what will sustain us in the coming winter months, and carry us through. How can you celebrate this time of year? Harvesting and wildcrafting are excellent activities, be it your own garden or (with permission) local trails, hikes, woods, riverways, and other areas. It is a time to celebrate anything you have brought to fruition so far this year from the seeds planted during our spring celebration of Imbolc, and it is an excellent time to journal and reflect on anything that did not come to pass, and why that may be for the best. Decorations and adornments include fresh bread, grains and woods, autumn colors, fresh apples, fresh gathered herbs especially mugwort, and candlelight. Shorter days, longer nights, cooler days, and autumn chill in on the way. I can't wait! Six months. This week marks six months since I decided to strike out on my own. Well…”decided” is the wrong word considering all that transpired; it was an uncomfortable push off a cliff that I never wanted to dive. I don’t know how I could be so at home in a setting that no longer wanted me, but something in me knew it was time. I truly have nothing but the best of wishes for all those people from my past. Seriously. I am in such a good place right now that I can sit in the comfort that comes from wanting nothing but growth, healing, peace, love, and true transformation for those individuals. I can see how karma has swung its sword in so many ways, and the part of me that gave love and support to these people aches for them. Knowing what could have been, perhaps in a different life. I’m blessed to have families of Corvids in my garden right now; Crows, Jackdaw and Magpies and all have been gifting me feathers these past few weeks. Black feathers indicate your Spirit Guides have your back, mine often step closer when someone is attempting to send negative vibes my way. The youngsters have seen the smaller birds ‘asking’ for food and are imitating them in their own inimitable way. This usually involves brazenly tapping or fluttering at the kitchen and bedroom windows when the feeders are empty. So much so that even Max ignores them now. Eggs have been used in Witchcraft for aeons. They are a symbol of fertility and birth linked to Ostara and the season of Spring. In the Middle Ages it was thought that eggs helped Witches to fly on the Sabbath. Egg shells were also blamed for helping the Fae in their mischievous ways so shells were crushed to prevent this. MAGICK MAKERS TIP:- To make your own Cascarilla:- Wash and clean out and dry your eggshells carefully, then remove and discard the inner film Crush using a pestle and mortar or pop in a bag and crush with a rolling pin For extra oomph add some Dragon’s Blood Resin or add to Black Salt. You can also use it to add to your plants, fertility spells, healing magick and sprinkled across your doorstep. I have two beautiful branches on my Altar plus a driftwood shelf in my Healing Space. Take a close look at the pieces you find, what do you see? A dragon, bear or maybe something otherworldly. M A G I C K A L • M U S I N G S | ✩ Morning Magick Magickers ….. There’s often confusion over the Dark Moon and New Moon so I thought this would make a great topic for discussion. Each lunar cycle lasts 29.5 days and so the phases repeat themselves in each. I know most of you are all very familiar with the Full Moon and New Moon energies, and many of you are very attuned to La Luna so much so that you may find yourself ‘moon sensitive’ to a certain phase. We talk of the moon as ‘waxing’, getting bigger, and ‘waning’ getting smaller. Menstrual cycles often link to the moon with the womb being most fertile at the Full Moon. Where the egg isn’t fertilised bleeding would occur around the Dark Moon. The New Moon is when the first crescent appears in the night sky. This is the first phase of the moon and the perfect time to focus on new ideas or goals. Let go of what hadn’t worked out and focus on what’s coming next. Spells for changing your life path are idea at this time. The Full Moon releases power relating to love and relationships. It signifies full circle; and ending and subsequent beginning. This is a great time to tap into your creative talents and if you have cats you’ll notice they maybe mischief making too. Even my old boy gets silly on a waxing Full Moon. The Dark Moon or ‘dark of the moon’ is the day or two before the New Moon. Traditionally this was a time for rest and slowing down and not casting spells. Not all calendars track the Dark Moon but I love the feeling of wanting to nest and take it easy, focus on myself or do a little soul searching. It can be used for banishing and shadow work. Blessed Litha/Midsummer/Summer Solstice! The next few days mark the longest, most light filled days of the year. It is a time to celebrate the beginning of summer, with the Goddess manifesting as Mother Earth and the God as the Sun King, the marriage of the God and Goddess and seeing their union as the force that creates all, outwardly and within ourselves. As I steep some deep medicine for my own use, I sit among my mugwort, taller than I, barefoot as the sun takes its longest ride down to the horizon. I am both drawn inward to all I gather in me, all I am, all I hold, and I open to receive, all I choose to release, all I hope to be, and all that’s making it’s way to me. I dream of faraway lands and magick places I hope to visit someday, envious of those who have, and who are. But I am reminded of the magick in my own backyard; in gratitude, lest I forget that I don’t need anything extraordinary to find it. Spell Jars Today for the first time I shared full blown ritual with my eldest daughter making spell jars. We began by cleansing ourselves and the whole home with burning herbs and asked that all negative energies be cleansed. We opened circle and called in the medicine wheel (directions, moons, elements and our wisdom keepers, ancestors and guides. We each chose a spell candle and set our intentions. Then we made spell jars: I made one for our home and family and she made one for herself and her bedroom. To do this we gathered items such as plants and flowers, sea shells, oils, spell candles, salt, and whatever else we felt held the energy of our intentions into a clean and cleansed jar. I wrote down my intention in words then made a sigil from this and put it inside too. She didn’t want to do that, which is totally fair enough, her jar holding her intention as it is. Now we wait for the spell candles to extinguish themselves, before closing the circle and placing our jars and the other crystals to make a grid with around the home. She’s nearly 8, she doesn’t like the idea of calling herself a witch whereas I choose to, but it’s been such fun and pleasing to share tools, rituals, practices and knowledge with her so she can explore this more if she wants to, at any age. After covering Hawthorn and more since Beltane I’m sticking (literally) to a botanical theme with Cleavers. I’m sure like me you have an abundance of this sticky little plant in your garden or nearby hedgerows/fields. Cleavers also go by the names Goose Grass, Sticky Willy, Madder’s Cousin and Catchweed. Although considered a bit of a noxious weed around the world it is a plant where you can use the whole. It’s little white flowers do smell of honey though. Cleavers are from the same family as coffee and contain caffeine. The fruit bodies can be roasted and ground as a coffee substitute too. Taken internally it helps with cystitis, improving liver function and as a diuretic. Studies have also shown that Cleavers has the ability to bring down high blood pressure and is often used to help with sleeplessness and insomnia. N.B. Cleavers can cause irritation in some people and can have a laxative effect. MAGICK MAKERS: Magickally they link to Venus, Sun and Moon and the element of water. A favourite of kids everywhere for its stickability when thrown at others, I find it is ideal when fashioned as a circle for my nature Altar or for any magickal workings in nature. You can make your ‘circle’ as big as you need! Cleavers is often used in binding spells and matters of commitment, especially with spell bags and bottles. Cleavers also works as a simple tisane, sweetened with a little honey if needed. Inspired by my garden once again because it is said that if you could stand on seven daisies at once then summer has arrived. Daisies have associations with the Sun and Litha (midsummer) but also the Moon, the Goddess and the element of water. Daisies are also affiliated to Beltane and are symbols of love. Magically they also connect to happiness, luck and purity and are beloved by bees. Daisies symbolise innocence and childhood so can be used in protection spells or blessings for babies and children. Simple daisy Magick includes chanting ‘he loves me, he loves me not’ chant while plucking individual petals, a basic form of divination. The petal and even whole flower heads can be used to cast love spells or create a protection circle if you are working any Litha magick, a Sun spell. Daisies are edible and are packed with beneficial ingredients. They make a great addition to summer salads and herbal teas but make a great salve for the skin too. This is due to the diuretic and anti-inflammatory properties, so great for bruises! MAGICK MAKERS TIP: Create a chain, wreath or crown of daisies to bring luck in love when worn. Place daisies under your pillow to reignite an old love affair. This week’s #witchytip is inspired by the abundance of dandelion’s in our fields, hedgerows and gardens currently, symbols of growth and transformation. This yellow flower resembles the Sun, the puff ball resembles the Moon, and the dispersing seeds resemble the stars. The flowers open to greet the morning and close in the evening to sleep with the name is taken from the French word ‘dent de lion’ meaning lion’s tooth. They were well known to ancient Egyptians, Greeks and Romans, and have been used in Chinese traditional medicine for over a thousand years. Hardy and adaptable, dandelions have Goddess associations; Aphrodite through her connection to bees and Hecate via their link to the Underworld. Medicinally, this hardly little plant has many properties. The sap from the stems can be used to cure warts, and the leaves can be dried and made into a tea to aid in digestion. A tincture brewed from the bright yellow flowers is believed to help with complaints related to the liver, and the root can be dried and brewed into a tea as well. MAGICK MAKERS TIP: If you have a bad habit you’re struggling to break, connect that intention with a dandelion puff, and then blow it out away from you. Dandelion tea is a strong diuretic. Dandelions are masters of survival and a reminder to never give up …..
