Nelly is a sweet 6 year old girl who came to us because her owner was concerned about a possible hernia. The hernia was getting bigger and the owner wanted to make sure she was okay. She let us know that her previous dog passed away from a mammary tumor and she wanted to make sure Nelly got the care she needed. Her owner waited patiently to be seen as an urgent care walk up appointment. When we saw her we found that her hernia was actually a lipoma and did not need treatment. We did notice that she was matted and seemed very uncomfortable. Her owner let us know that she tries to groom her but has a really hard time due to her own mobility. We added her on the same day as a sedated shave down to make her much more comfortable. We performed a nail trim at the same time. Once we shaved all her mats off around her face we noticed that her dental disease was very severe. We will be working with the owner to provide the dental care she needs. Her owner was so thankful and we were able to provide the care Nelly needed financially through our VESPR program (Veterinary Equity for Shelter Pet Reunification) with @sfanimalcareandcontrol. We are so thankful to Cal For All Animals for providing us with the grant to be able to serve our San Francisco community. We were also able to serve Nelly due to our language access to Spanish. We proudly have 5 languages available to our community provided through our staff members (Cantonese, mandarin, Spanish, Korean, and Thai). This was a research paper coming out of La Trobe in Melbourne, looking at particularly South Asian experiences of raising an autistic child in Australia. I love that we're doing research in understanding experiences, because so many of us feel like there are supports in place, without seeing who is still not yet able to access the supports. Who doesn't feel safe to ask. Who doesn't feel safe to come. Who doesn't feel safe, because sometimes the world has made them feel like they can't or shouldn't. Still, participants felt rooted in positive hope for the future and invested in their children. Some reported doing hour long trips to therapy and back. They felt therapy was worth it, once they found professionals who they could trust, to be open and collaborative with and included them in the therapy process. I guess this paper was a good wake up call for me. There are members who still feel alone, like they have to do it all by themselves, who aren't yet connected. Remember that feeling?
