You want to take care of everyone. But that doesn’t always include ourselves- especially during postpartum. Our mindset shifts automatically to the needs of our babies and extended family. During the sacred window of postpartum mental, physical and emotional changes occur. One of the biggest changes is how we prioritize our own needs and for many women they end up last. A great gift you can give yourself is to recognize areas (like the one so mentioned) and see if those needs are being met and what areas you need some reflection. Fourth annual retreat in North Carolina @thehorseshoefarm was more beautiful than I can express in words here. “Profound experience” is how one guest reflected. During sessions of movement, tuning forks, reiki, resonance of the seed sounds, breathwork and witnessing release and rebound, I cracked myself wide open. The place in my back had been preparing for it for more than a year. At the river, with my soul sister @k_bratherton, I had something lift from me and in its place a deep knowing of my Self, of the Earth, the Universe.. and even further still… revealed its vast power. The Spanish used many terms to identify a person's socio-cultural lineage and these can help give us information specially if we are in search of our ancestors of indigenous and african ancestry or other lineages. In Latin America and the Carribbean our lineages are way more complicated then we think. Please note this posting is just to make you aware of these terms BUT each country may sometimes use other terms or use the same words in different ways. For example in Mexico you will see in some records use the term "español " or "española", is that an ancestor that came directly from Spain? No, that is an Ancestor also known as "criollo" who was born outside of Spain, but has enough Spanish ancestry to be considered "español". Does it mean that line can still be mixed? Yes, that ancestor could still descend from indigenous ancestors. Pattern that feels really hard to break and lessons that feel really hard to learn often come from lifetimes of experiences that have created that pattern. The same goes for ancestral patterns. You have encoded within your DNA the trauma, emotions, and experiences which need to be cleared. To be honest, many times it is both (which was a purposeful choice before you incarnated here, since you chose your parents for a multitude of reasons). Any karma, patterns, and trauma created in the physical must be cleared and brought to completion in the physical. So if it feels big, it will create big shifts when released (not just for you but for all of the yous past, present, future and parallel) and for your lineage past, present, and future. Remembering why I'm here/how today started. 🤎 Also love that there is a song sharing the title of today's date, marking a final step in my visa process. I was ready this morning, followed the rules, showed up early, and still experienced disappointment and delays (also, Portugal - reality check for anyone wanting to move here). Unexpected tears flowed. Disappointment and anger showed up inside me. It needed to, and I also needed to see how attached I was to a certain outcome. A reminder (also to me) that all that is really in our control is how we respond and show up. That attachment creates suffering. When we can learn to flow, feel, and return to our center, then we can truly consider ourselves emotionally wise and strong. Not perfect, still human, but more equipped to handle a world full of decay, illusion, and distraction. Stepping back from the narrow focus on the situation, I was able to see and receive beauty, support, and connection. In the kind Uber driver who recently immigrated from Angola, waited throughout the delay, and talked me through my rage tears. In the tiny waiting room, where I met another Black American and another family from America - one parent who was a Filipina woman. I truly believe in synchronicity and purpose in each meeting and interaction, and it felt like different lineages and aspects of my identity were arriving, uprooting, healing. While it felt like I "lost" time, money, and energy in the waiting, the truth is I gained much more. And the reality is, the hard moment quickly becomes a memory. The beautiful moments, too. Here's to strengthening your connection to your true self, your intuitive and wise warrior self. To trusting that there is beauty and purpose in the moments of challenge and seeming defeat. To being present and showing up for your soul's journey. I tried to “just” do psychic and mediumship readings, but the body wisdom always wanted to come though. I would be connecting with a loved one, but couldn’t help notice pain or blockages coming from my clients. THE BIG A, PT.II It’s tender to recognize I’m at the point in life in which seeing photos of people on social media could very well mean they’ve passed on. And as soon as I saw Steve Albini’s world-weary expression pop up yesterday, I knew instantly that he was gone. You’ve no doubt seen all kinds of personal accounts and anecdotes here, all of them more pointed and perceptive than mine—Albini and I crossed paths a handful of times, with no meaningful exchanges to report. But for me, what’s most interesting about his story—besides “Atomizer” utterly reorganizing my conception of what music was capable of—is his evolution. For most of his career, Albini’s “brand” was brutal and reflexive scorn. It confused me, given his status as a thinker and a respected recording engineer. Why would someone so seemingly secure in his skills take such pains to demean others? It cheapened him, and confused me. Of course, it snagged at me because of all the ways I’d resorted to mockery and disdain when my selfhood felt threatened. A trait I’ll probably remain in active dialogue with for the rest of my life. I’ll never know exactly what shaped Steve Albini, but what sticks with me now is his capacity to change. How he allowed his native kindness—something people who actually knew him often comment on—to come to the fore. Last August, I read a fascinating profile on Albini in The Guardian. Chicken or the egg…but we aren’t really talking eggs today! Appetite 2020… Food cravings…this widely prevalent subjective trait has been reported to occur by 97% of women and 68% of men at least once in their lifetime. Now comes the why or the chicken or egg question…Higher food craving scores were associated with a lower diet quality, higher eating frequency, longer daily eating interval, and a lower likelihood of following a time restricted eating pattern. Food cravings were also positively associated with BMI and waist circumference. The authors here state, “Our findings of significant associations of food cravings with lower diet quality, poor eating patterns, and unfavorable body composition strongly support efforts of targeting cravings in behavioral programs for weight management.” When craved foods are consumed, the reward centers of the brain such as the orbitofrontal cortex and ventral striatum, undergo greater activation compared to when non-craved foods are consumed. Food cravings therefore present a motivation to eat, often independent of hunger, and are linked to excess energy intake and a higher lifetime BMI. A paper published in Current Biology, demonstrated that the pleasure center of the brain that produces the chemical dopamine, and the brain's separate biological clock that regulates daily physiological rhythms, are linked, and that high-calorie foods, hyperpalatable foods -- which bring pleasure -- disrupt normal feeding schedules, resulting in overconsumption. "We've shown that dopamine signaling in the brain governs circadian biology and leads to consumption of energy-dense foods between meals and during odd hours." I find this all very interesting. To me, metabolic dysfunction is the downstream consequence of the inappropriate food environment humans have created. In other words…we did this to ourselves!

"Invite the boys, go out, enjoy yourself, I got it, I'll hold down the fort, I'll do it all alone, I don't actually need you for anything. I can do bath time, story time, feeding, sleeping, early mornings, late nights... I got it all. Enjoy the cuddles and smiles and leave the rest to me." – a 90's trophy wife mentality that leaves no place for a millennial new dad who wants nothing more than to be needed, wanted, adequate and involved. It's not because you CAN do it alone that you SHOULD. This pushed my husband away while I confusingly wondered why he would feel so negatively about this: a wife who never asks for help and takes care of everything on her own so he can just enjoy the good parts. And therapy helped me see that this 👆🏼 is not what a good co-parent and wife does. It is if she married someone who wants nothing to do with them and their kids or is never around or doesn't want to be an involved dad. And that's not who I married. That's not who I chose as my baby's dad. So why am I still acting this out? Patterns run deep. Even when we pull weeds at the root they sometimes grow back. Journaling Prompts for Personal Decolonization: A Beginning How can you support and uplift Black Indigenous, and People of Color (BIPOC) in your community and beyond? These are difficult, heart-wrenching times. As a facilitator with lived experience across many intersectional identities, I believe we need a starting point. I offer these prompts as a personal invitation for deeper reflection. However, before attempting to step into unfamiliar shoes, I call you home- home to your own context. When I think about what's happening globally, I return to the beginning: contextualizing myself as a Boricua of the Diaspora living on Turtle Island. I ask, how did we get here? What did we "buy" into? How do we perpetuate, simply by living here, the structures created by the ever-present spirit of colonialism? I believe in rebuilding our capacity to hold multiple perspectives with humility, questioning our own privilege. Let's gently engage with these questions. The worldwide change we seek begins with us, personally, interpersonally, and then communally and systemically. It’s moving and grooving through the constant state of life and death. A cycle that nature knows all too well. The way the sun and the moon play their intricate dance. The way some plants go to sleep and rest through the winter. The way that plants can grow tall, die and resurrect a new. The way a uterus can proliferate tissue just to shed it a few weeks later. The way that a seed is planted in the uterus: nurtured, watered, fed, then birthed. Some people ask me where I acquired the knowledge that I use. They ask for book recommendations on birth and bellies. I høj grad min hjemmebane - Martin bliver trigget bare, jeg siger ordet "forfædre" 😬😆 Og så har vores samtaler alligevel sået nogle frø i ham og sat gang i nogle processer... Denne gang har Martin valgt, at vi skal tale om håb, og jeg går med ordet, med følelsen. Mærker ind. Hvor bor håbet? I hjertet, kroppen, sjælen, sindet? Hvad når vi mister det? Kan det bare flytte?!! Our benevolent ancestors champion our evolution and support us with our growth. Many of our gifts have been passed down from previous generations.
